Does anyone have a suggestion who in athletics would be the best first contact?

I really think this should be made to happen. It would give fans a great picture spot at the entrance! Illinois has a giant Red Grange.

We should have Deisel

The best way to approach this with athletics is to show commitment to funding the whole facility plan with the caveat that if we come through with funding, they will come through with a statue, memorial, or what have you.

Wow. Bringing up the $136 million Facilities Master Plan when the discussion is about a memorial to Diesel. One has nothing to do with the other. If you're against it, just say so.

Cool your jets buddy.

I took it for Granted that you'd be Mr. Negative about this. That's OK though. Just be honest about it.

How on earth am I being negative?

quite possibility, the adm may be formulating something. As usual, people want somthing up yesterday. A memmorial would not cost that much where you have to hve a fundraiser.

Would that be the same administration that didn't even call Cheerdad to inform him there was going to be a tribute to Diesel last game?

+1, yes it would. Maybe SF was too busy at the tailor for that fancy suit he was sporting on Saturday.

But, we would need a guarantee that they wouldn't use the same artist responsible for Pigdog.

When and if it gets to that point, Renee Bemis would certainly be a strong candidate. Not only did she sculpt the Three Huskies in the Chessick Center Plaza, Renee lives in the area and has a strong connection to NIU Athletics. And, she's spent some time with Diesel at games.

No one here said they want something up yesterday. People are smart enough to know that this would take time, if done.

The thing to do is ask Athletics if anything like this is planned. If not, then suggest the idea of the statue. And, yes, a fundraiser IS necessary if not paid for by Athletics. The cost of a bronze statue will be several thousand dollars

gosh this post strikes a modicum of sense. Why all the haranging, just talk to the ath dept., yes the same one that got us the non conf games and the Yorden and the chessick etc etc etc.

I'd donate for this too. I really hope NIU can do something officially, though.

I'll donate $20. Always made the Tues/Wed games better.

I'll donate $200 if NIU gets within 1 possession against OSU.
I'll donate $1,000 if NIU wins (yes, seriously).

Would you like to run the Athletics department at NIU? I'm sure you'd be REALLY GREAT at it. Give me a break. You guys and your trashing of the school you supposedly love over how they handle the loss of our former mascot is atrocious. They played a tribute video, sent out massive social media messages regarding his passing, and wore huskie helmets in his honor. I'm sorry they didn't have a bronze statue waiting for the fans after 3 days, but you know SF can only do so much. Maybe instead of constantly complaining about how there wasn't ENOUGH done regarding the passing of diesel, you think back and be thankful that we had such a great mascot. Think about the time people at NIU's athletic office put into sending out the messages, and making a video, and making an announcement at the game. It's unbelievable to see some of the things you guys right about how terrible NIU is over the handling of the passing of a former mascot. We all loved diesel, he was great, I have many many many fond memories of him. But the world can't stop because the former mascot passed away. Maybe the school isn't doing enough if your eyes, but be thankful they've done something. Plenty of schools wouldn't of even cared. My god, go root for U of I, or ISU, or Notre Dame. I can't sit here and watch you trash NIU and especially trash Sean Fraizer, who by the way is doing a FANTASTIC job for this university. It's truly sad. Much more sad than not having a statue ready to roll in the case of diesel's death. You guys sit here and complain and complain and complain. Yet, after you read this I will be the one who is told he is being negative. Anyway, sorry my alma mater couldn't reach your massive expectations in honoring the dog. When mission passes maybe they can come to you guys for advice. As for my two cents, I think they did a fantastic job giving diesel a tribute video and wearing the huskie helmets, and I thank Sean Frazier and the entire staff for all the HARD WORK they put in day in and day out to make us proud to be Huskies. In the future maybe you will see the statue of diesel, you never know. But for me, i'm going to keep supporting this school and this team, and I suggest you do the same. There are bigger things ahead.

RIP Diesel and Go Huskies.

RE: Memorial for Diesel
There's no way I'll allow anyone to question my loyalty and support of NIU and NIU Athletics. Suffice it to say, I've been supportive on many levels for a long, long time.

You can be a loyal supporter and also realize that a mistake was made by NIU Athletics in this instance. To this day, CheerDad has not been contacted by NIU regarding Diesel's passing nor was he recognized at the Murray State game. And that's not right.

The support shown for a memorial to Diesel in this thread has been overwhelming. Would NIU support it financially and otherwise? Don't know. As Dog Fan said, the fact that there is strong support, financially and otherwise, for a memorial should be communicated to NIU. Hopefully, NIU will be supportive and discuss what things need to happen for it to become a reality.

Looks to me like we have a LOT committed already. I think what you would call "seed money" we may be 1/3 of the way towards what's needed already.

So . . . anyone in particular in "Athletics" that might be the best to call first?

If you have a suggestion, let's hear it. Thanks.

Damn you Bob you only went to what 80-85 games in a row? 05-nono

Anyone that flew to Idaho to see NIU play in the Kibbie Dome should never be questioned on loyalty!

Actually it was 97 in a row... Wish I could have gotten to at least 100, but it just wasn't meant to be.

Bob, you may be being too sensitive to this. DFNorth has all his youthful certitude going on, but besides that seems fairly rational. In this instance, he mistakes our complaint that Tom and the CheerDad family should have been better acknowledged for something else. Educate him, don't berate him.

Speaking of CheerDad, I think someone should contact him to ask him if he's OK with this idea. If he is, I'm in for both the statue and the Husky Rescue donation.

CheerDad is fine with the idea of a permanent memorial to Diesel. IMO, he should have significant input on the specifics of the memorial.
