The honeymoon is over.

At kickoff, there were more students than any game since (at least) Marshall in 13. The heat index seemed well over 100 for most of the first half; do we really blame 'em for leaving an uncompetitive game?

Not at all. This was meant to be a blowout game and it was. I left at half. Most of our 200 people tailgate did too... No blame for the students. See everyone in Austin next week!

So I know this was wagner, but Walter looks to be the best rb since Quentin smith or michael perry

This kid looks great. Everyone is so high on him. Ever since he was a true freshman. This kid is fast. Wow.

For what I saw in the first half, so does the outside containment D.

Congrats on the win, but they'll need to play alot better D and special teams if they expect to hang with UT next week.

RE: Rice vs Wagner Game thread
Just got back from the game. I thought defense was fine in the first half - a little less energy in the second half. The offense was fine but Wagner had a ton of bad missed tackles. And I don't think the passing game was that sharp.

But overall, a solid effort and a lot of young guys had very nice debuts.

It's also very exciting to see the hole in the ground on the north endzone and realize what it will look like in a year.

BTW, this was our highest scoring game since we scored 62 on East Carolina in 2010, and our second biggest margin of victory in the David Bailiff era (second to the 77-14 destruction of North Texas in Todd Dodge's first year there I think?).

Think Parks is "dinged". Heard pre-game might be held out

Probably the smart move, but why no targeting of Mayden or Cella. Unless we're holding those plays for UT next week when we're going to have to be more creative in our formations and play calling. As for Davis, hopefully, he's not out too long, but RB is the certainly the one position we have the luxury of quality depth.

How much of our offensive scheme was just Bailiff keeping simple and vanilla? Also should it be impressive that all seven of our TD's were on the ground. I'm a little concerned about our defense. They seem susceptible to the long pass and the outside run.

RE: Rice vs Wagner Game thread
Posted on wrong thread..

Takeaways.

Positive
Depth at RB (Walter and Dillard looked great)
Team was ready to play; not flat (hint: to all those who have been critical about preparedness in DB era; can't criticize that today. No $.05 St. repeat). Would have been easy to be flat given poor crowd, wait for kickoff, humidity, etc.
DJ looked good (except pick..see below). Good running and speed option decisions.
Up-Front control of line-of-scrimmage on both sides (recognizing Wagner is not Baylor or Texas though)
Fox/Frosh Kicker will be good
German. Don't know why risk a DJ injury that late in game. Get him in earlier.
Students running to their seats when Owls took field in warm-ups and then out to field for player run-thru
Like opening with 'cupcake' vs. a 'body bag' Hope to see more of that. Props to JK.
Watching Horns tonight; this team has very real chance for a W next week. Signature win time.
Stewart will break one this year as punt returner.
Depth. Lots of young guys who got action today that will be important at season goes on.
Did not have to show much of playbook. Should be plenty of wrinkles/action off the plays shown today for over-aggressive D's.

Concerns
Davis ankle; hope he is ready to go next week.
DJ Int; rare poor decision.
Did not see TE's; Absent
Kickoff coverage looked suspect; No Boz means better have lanes. Talent won today but next week could get exposed.
Overly conservative on lightening call/start; understand need for safety but was over-the-top to make it a one hour vs. 30-min delay.
MOB looks smaller each year.
Still look vulnerable to get beat deep. Young DB's were lucky that our DL pressure got to the QB a few times. Next week, same situation could be six points.

RE: Rice vs Wagner Game thread
It was pretty vanilla but we passed a lot more in the second half than you would have expected with a 35-3 halftime lead.

Our 2nd and 3rd string DB's might have been beat deep a couple of times, but our 1st stringers were fine.

Hopefully we'll target the TE's more in the future. Physically #17 looks the part at WR, but he had 1 or 2 drops today so he's not the heir apparent to Jordan Taylor yet (Decell had at least 1 drop too). I think Mayden caught one pass? The Wright Brothers looked good (although they're not brothers I realize).

To those on the sports committee: has any consideration been given to moving the student section to the home side?
