I use 7 and am thinking of going back to 2000 Pro. But a review of 10 would be helpful.

RE: Windows ten info?
If you have windows 7 or a later version you can download windows 10 free. It will cost $119 to download it after the free period. I have previewed the program but I suspect that a lot of the apps that were free on older programs, we might have to purchase.????

I looked at the benefits and I'm not a gamer so it won't really help me. I'll stick with Windows 8 until there is a more compelling reason to upgrade.

RE: Windows ten info?
It's a solid upgrade. I've been using it throughout the upgrade and the final version is very good. It takes the best parts of Windows 7 and Windows 8 and combines them. The start menu is back, but has a section of tiles from Windows 8's start screen on it. You can run traditional Windows applications alongside the newer Windows 8 apps that were formerly full screen only. They can now run in windows.

You won't have to re-purchase any application you currently use unless that application developer wants to charge for an upgrade. Windows 10 itself is free if you upgrade from Windows 7 or higher within a year of July 29th. The hardware requirements haven't changed, so if you can run Windows 7, you can run 10. I'm running it at home on an almost 10 year old Intel Core 2 Duo desktop and on a 1st generation Lenovo Yoga convertable laptop. Both run it very well.

JTiger, what "gamer" benefits are you talking about?

I was reading a review of it and said that it really benefits gamers because of DirectX9 apparently that is really good but so far Windows 8 works on my home PC just fine.

RE: Windows ten info?
yakko: Thanks for the information. You answered most of the questions I had about windows ten. My computer runs on a windows 8.1, my wife has vista on her computer. I think we will put both on the windows10.
Mine first so she can check it out. If I put it on hers first and she doesn't like it, I will probably have to get her a new computer.

RE: Windows ten info?
upgrade from 8.1 to 10 on one of my computers

only issue i have had is that i was running microsoft money, which is not longer supported, and windows 10 broke it
but there is a fix by making a change in the regedit (easy google search)

Yes. Do it. Even if you're running Windows 8.1 ... there are usability changes to lessen the impact from Windows 8 (originally) and introduces many of the items you're familiar with from Windows 7. And it's free for a year from 7/29/15. The reviews across the board have been overwhelmingly positive.

I am running 8.1 on a new laptop I purchased last summer, and I made my reservation for Windows 10. I had been using Windows 8 at work for about a year, so hopefully 10 isn't that different.

I'm sticking with Windows 8 simply because I can keep my MS Office 2010 I already bought. I read around on the web a little and it's not supported with Windows 10.

Mine works just fine so It's not a big deal for me to switch.

where have you seen that? There's no reason Office 2010 will not work on Windows 10.

Okay. I saw a not so reliable internet review and it was stated that you had to go to the Office 365 but I already paid for Office 2010. However, I saw a more legit source that said it works.

I suppose I'll upgrade to 10 now. that was my only reason for not upgrading before.

RE: Windows ten info?
i ran into another issue

with google maps, when the earth piece is activated, the screen goes to black

i had to un-check Use hardware acceleration when available under options/advanced in my browser (firefox)

(my video card was updated for windows 10, so this could be related to what hardware you are running)

I think I saw that review when I searched online. That was because the guy was using a key from his company and they switched to 365 and disabled the old keys. If you have a standalone key that you purchased there should be no problem.

I would recommend doing the upgrade rather than a clean install, at least at first. It'll let you roll back if you do have problems. After you're happy you can do a PC reset if you want the "clean install" experience.

I have Office 2007 and have had zero problems with it since upgrading to Windows 10.

RE: Windows ten info?
Be aware that there are some security measures that you should take if you should contemplate if you want to upgrade or install Windows 10.
There is a privacy setting that you should all familiarize yourself with.
If you do not turn many of those settings off under the privacy setting..Windows 10 will collect data on you and send it back to Microsoft.

You will also want to adjust how much bandwidth Windows 10 will use...as it treats its new update system much like bittorent. While you are idle...Windows 10 will use your bandwidth to help upload updates to other Windows 10 users. You CAN turn that feature off as well.

So far...it has been ok. There hasn't been any noticeable speed bump that I have seen from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. I believe the main reason for the update to 10 was all the negative press that 8 had gotten, much like Windows Vista.
After the Service pack 2 update..Windows Vista was pretty decent..but by then it had become a PR nightmare...so the decision was made to go full speed ahead with rolling out Windows 7.

I hope this helps.

I wish my upgrade was as smooth as these. Stuck in a loop with start and cortana not running. Now I find a lot of this issue raised in forums with no MS fix yet. I am regretting the upgrade at this point.
