IMO he has an objective and it is likely NOT Big12 expansion. The trick is to figure out what he is really after.
It seems quite obviously that it involves Texas. Could he be trying to force Texas hand to give up the LHN and adopt an confernece network?
Or could it be the PAC expansion is back in play? Or is Oklahoma looking for greener pastures? i.e. BIG10.
It is highly unlikely it involves the SEC since he said no to that opportunity.
My guess is, that Boren still longs to be associated with the PAC and that just might be his objective.
He longed for the PAC when The Big Ten did not seem possible. With it being possible now, how much would he long for those long flights to the west coast and the loss of time for the student athletes?
DeLoss Dodd's comments about that are just as pertinent for Oklahoma athletes. The PAC looks great until you have a better option.
You may be right. Boren is a former Rhodes Scholar and loves the academics part, which the Big10 certainly has. I do know that he has worked very hard on improving OU academics. I believe his goal is AAU status. Moving to the BIG would fit his recent comments.
I am not sure what your recent posts are driving at about realignment. But you seem to be saying more than one Big12 school to the Big10.

If they have an invite to the big 10, pac 12 or sec they do…OU leaves the big 12, the big 12 is dead. Now Texas will be OK but they will need to also move.

Patterson loves the PAC. He has a goal for Texas money and loves the China connection. Oklahoma wanted Pac this whole time. Luck would have brought expansion. Patterson was hired to transition to the PAC16. Boren will appear to drag Texas to the PAC kicking and screaming.
That leaves the rest of the Big 12. if they want to stick together, they better add some teams soon.

OU is the dancing partner. They certainly have a modicum of bargaining power over UT and Boren is flexing it. The rest of the conference, not so much.

Is he threatening UT to dump the LHN so the conference can get its own network? Is he threatening UT to get behind expansion?
And is the threat that OU (and Ok St) will leave the Big 12 when the GOR is up?
Sure sounds like a possibility.
It could be for a Big 12 Network. It is something that I have been saying for awhile that the Longhorn Network becomes a Big 12 Network, and expand into big markets. Memphis, Northern Illinois, UCF and Cincinnati could put them into 4 top 50 tv markets. Could that be why Northern Illinois also upgrading as well?
Cincinnati, UCF, UNI and Memphis are adding onto their stadiums, and East Carolina and USF could be as well as we are speaking. Move to 16 and put Iowa State into the East.

I agree, but they have far more sway power than any other Big 12 school. Texas needs Oklahoma. They know they won't be able to throw that Longhorn Network on anyone else. The rest of the Big 12 will continue to cave to whatever Texas wants.
Then again, no one thought A&M would actually do anything about this when the Longhorn Network idea was first hatched, and look where they are now...

Nice to see a school in the current Big12 alignment finally rattling sabers at an unsustainable situation, and the reality is Oklahoma is the only program left with enough cache to do so.
Lets not forget that West Virginia, Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State and TCU also spoke up about expansion recently as well. Could OU getting the feelings that some of the Big 12 schools might break away to another conference like Kansas to the Big 10? Someone could also be interested in TCU and West Virginia as well. Could the SEC settle for Okie State if OU do not go to them?

RE: Did Boren just threaten UT?
As a long-time junkie of expansion, I know it's more complicated than what I'm about to say...
But the Big Ten West is sorely lacking firepower since the annihilation of Leaders/Legends. No, Kansas doesn't offer that firepower, but it offers a PRIME rivalry between OU and Nebraska, and every game OU plays immediately becomes a Tier 1 or Tier 2 content game. (And basketball would be a huge GET for the BTN and the Big Ten's upcoming TV deal.) Yes, the Big Ten has the money to buy out even a lucrative buyout from the Big 12.
OKSt and Baylor would be attractive to the SEC. It would fully make Texas an 'SEC' state.
And at that point, folks, I think the once-powerful Longhorns might be forced to roll the dice as an independent. I think the right AD could pull it off, too. They aren't ND, but they aren't BYU either. They have the brand to have a fantastic national schedule and get butts in the seats all over the country (and eyeballs on the TV). Of course, their product has to be good...
But it's plausible.

The B10 is a lot more than a football league.
The B12 schools that could end up in the B10 are AAU schools Texas and Kansas.
The B10 does not need Oklahoma to double its present tv revenue.

I'd like to see the link or anything else that states that Boren turned down the SEC. The SEC doesn't offer conference admission. They didn't for Mizzou or A&M. Both programs severed ties with the Big 12 before being admitted to the SEC.
It is hard to link a TV interview that happened several years back. However, if you want proof you might search the Oklahoman back when all of this happened. They had a story about the OU powers that be not wanting any part of the SEC culture.
Naturally you can play with words about the SEC not making offers etc.. What he said was, OU had an opportunity to join the SEC and passed on it. Believe it or not, I do not care.
Besides you would be awfully naive if you did not believe that Missouri and A&M were assured of an invite by the SEC before they withdrew from the Big12.
I know what your talking about ( the Oklahoman articles) and agree.

I don't see how this can be?!? For the past four years or so I have been led to believe by many posters that the gazillions that the Tier 3 rights bring in, especially to the likes of an Oklahoma and Kansas, far exceed any pittance a conference tv network could bring in. So this can't possibly be what it is about.
Cheers,
Neil

I think OU trumps AAU. The B1G already admitted to vetting OU, KU and Vandy during the last round of expansion. http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball...oma-others

I agree 100%. I still see Rice as a dark horse B1G candidate. OU,KU, and Rice along with 1 more like Tulane would be a pretty nice academic/athletic package for the B1G and get them in southern states.

As SMUmustangs alluded earlier, Boren is a very slippery character and he undoubtedly has multiple agendas/angles at work here. I won't try to unpack all of the possibilities right now. But from the standpoint of BigXII expansion, the one and only candidate who is both willing/available and is in a position to bring added value to the league is BYU. So, for at least as long as BYU remains Independent you'll know that the BigXII is not serious about expansion.

If we add them we might as well add SMU and have a Bible pod of BYU, Baylor, TCU, SMU.
