There were plans to go 18 with U. Mass. for all sports, but Temple ruined that plan.
They could still try to go to 18. The rumor schools that could be part of them?
Stony Brook
Fordham
Richmond
VCU (was looking at buying the city's stadium that seats 12,000 and thinking of adding football at the time.)
Delaware
James Madison
Southern Illinois
Western Kentucky
Northern Iowa
Wayne State, Mich. (former founder in the MAC, but now in D2.)
Illinois State
Missouri State
Mankato State
North Dakota State
Indiana State
Liberty
Maine
New Hampshire
URI
Old Dominion
Appalachian State
Charlotte
C. Conn. State

Imagine if they could have snared some of the schools that C-USA and Sun Belt invited?

Why are you so full of crap?

One thing that U. Mass. going for them is that they are a type of school that could be a Big 10 candidate.
They are a research institute, a state flagship of Mass, and a landlocked university. They just need to do is expand until they are ready. Big 10 would be an upgrade for their basketball over the A10.

Can you imagine if UCONN went all sports to the MAC or CUSA to keep its football in an FBS conference...? Gotta protect your best asset. UMass made the right call.

It would likely be a bigger gamble for UMass than UConn. Think about it if UConn was in the MAC I would say it would be near certain to get 2 bids yearly if the MAC keeps going as they have been lately.

If UMass joins they would be a quality basketball addition but they are not good enough on their own to make 2 bids near certain.

Lastly there would be years that UConn could get at large bids on their own but we know that UMass could not in the A10 which would make it even less likely in the MAC.

THe MAC is improving again in basketball but it isn't there yet.

Some bad decisions were made in the process for sure. Molnar was a terrible decision...and now unfortunately we'll be losing a conference affiliation when we have a good coach. The timing was bad because it was after a recent run of success (between Whipple's first stint and Don Brown taking over who went a combined 92-45, won one national championship and made it to another) had been gone for a full recruiting cycle under Kevin Morris, which basically ruined everything we had going for us (neither he nor Molnar can recruit...or coach really).

So yeah, it's been painful for more reasons than just the transition.

RE: UMass Football
For the last FBS home game in 2016 it will probably be either UCF or Buffalo, who both have 9/24 open. The rumor is it's UCF.

Scheduling an FCS game for 10/22 is not a problem.

The transition to FBS has not been painful for realists. Going into this transition the real fans knew that it was going to take at least 4 years to start winning games. Former coach Kevin Morris did a horrible job of recruiting after Don Brown left. The cupboard was bare in 2011 and UMass was starting from scratch right when they were moving up to FBS. The real fans were absolutely aware of this. We knew it was going to take a whole recruiting cycle of FBS players and that the first couple years were going to be ugly. We didn't anticipate Molnar being an absolute disaster of a coach, which didn't help, but he did recruit well and you can see that Whipple is making those players much much better.

Casual fans and outside observers who didn't know much about the team going into the transition may have been surprised, but the real fans and supporters knew there would be great struggles on the field.

Whipple is getting this team into form and if Frohnapfel and Sharpe stay healthy this is going to be a great season.

The new AD Ryan Bamford is forming a great team of athletic administrators and they will work on a plan for the stadium and new practice facilities.

This transition to FBS has gone almost exactly as the true followers expected. It's only year 4. Moving up to FBS takes years for most programs to become successful. I told everyone that it would be similar to when WKU moved up, and that's pretty much how it's gone so far.

The one thing UMass has had to deal with more than any other school that's moved up to the FBS is biased negative press pushed by the Anti-UMass Boston Globe and very loud Anti-Sports professors who have no understanding of how college athletics work and want to see all D1 college athletics abolished.

UMass Football is improving and we will continue to do so. This is a growing process that takes many years.

Go UMass!!

UMass' long-term plan should have been to go with the MAC in all sports. It would give them a safe home. They could do very well in basketball, go to a bunch of NCAA tourneys, and slowly build the brand name and the football program. Then (if successful) they would get a look from the AAC someday.

I don't understand what the hell they're doing now.

^ Waiting for UConn to get that Big 10 invite so we can take your spot in the AAC.

Haha, just kidding.

I wasn't opposed to going MAC for all-sports, but I realize that's hard when you have A-10 basketball.

But obviously UMass has stated they want to be AAC for all-sports and are committed to going Indy in football until we get that invite. If UConn would help and push the AAC to invite UMass we could get it done faster. It would give UConn an instant real rival in the AAC and would be good for the conference, IMHO.

Yes, I know we need to upgrade the stadium, but an invite to the AAC would push to make that happen. Unfortunately at UMass we usually need something like that to help push to get infrastructure upgrades done since we have so many people in the state, and even on campus, who hate seeing any spending on athletics unless it's for a move to a better place.

So tell your UConn officials to help us out! haha.

UConn may eventually help you out, but you need to get your act together first. As of now, the AAC has about five or six better candidates for expansion.

Of course, the AAC needs to get its act together before it can even talk about expansion.

Whipple is getting the act together on the field. As for the infrastructure issues, the new AD and his team are starting to work on that. He's only been here for about a month, so he needs a little time.

Go UMass!!

Better go with Buffalo unless you want another away game.

UCF 2016 OOC:
At - Michigan
At - Florida International
Home - Maryland
Needs a home game OOC to fill the schedule not an away game with UMASS.

Buffalo 2016 OOC:
At - Nevada
Home - Army
Needs to OOC games to fill the 2016 schedule - 1 Home and 1 Away.
Also needs one home OOC game for 2017.

Buffalo is the best scheduling option in this case to get another home game for UMASS. Scheduling Buffalo also cuts travel costs and help to continue a regional rivalry for UMASS too. It also gives UMASS a potential winnable game. UCF is on top of their game right now in the American and this game would be harder to win especially on the road.

I thought I read somewhere your playing Rhode Island for the D-1AA game in Gillette Stadium in 2016 or is that for 2015. If I am right all you need is a Buffalo home game and the 2016 schedule is complete.

Long or short term UMASS should have joined the MAC for all sports when the MAC ultimatum was delivered. When you are building a D-1 football program you have to think about both revenue sports not just one cash cow. The BB credits left behind would have covered the A-10 buyout unless your last AD thought he had a gentleman's agreement for a temporary spot in the Sunbelt until the next alignment worked its way out.

If UMASS had stayed in the MAC for all sports the MAC probably would have made an offer to James Madison for number 14 to balance the league and keep the Mid Atlantic and N.E. east coast media exposure.

Good luck on independence because I think an AAC invite that UMASS is looking for is pretty far off barring another P5 realignment grab for AAC teams. At the very least UMASS needs a major scheduling agreement with either the AAC or MAC for postseason bowl options to stay a float short term. The AAC would be the one to use to meet that goal with their longer list of bowls even though UMASS would get their worst bowl. Another option might be to try to get into their Miami Bowl when the AAC can't get a P5 opponent or BYU to play in that bowl.

BYU will remain independent if they don't grab a P5 slot or rejoin the MWC before joining the AAC at this time. The MWC is more stable then the AAC and less susceptible to being raided if realignment continues and BYU does not grab a P5 invite. The MWC also appears to be the stronger G5 conference at this time after pulling down the at large G5 slot for football and 3 NCAA BB bids last year. If BYU joins the MWC for FB only they only have to go through Boise for the G5 access slot in a weaker conference after the top two schools which would be BYU and Boise. Put them in separate divisions and the play off game is a marketing bonanza. Put them in the same division and the division game is a marketing bonanza with the winner primed to win the conference play off game and then take the G5 access slot. The money says they stay independent though.

Preferred AAC expansion candidates, roughly in the order of their desirability:

1) BYU
2) Boise
3) Air Force
4) Army
5) SDSU
6) Colorado State
7) Fresno
8) UMass

Some of the schools have "issues" ... Army doesn't want to join a conference, Boise has many selfish demands, etc. That still leaves a few schools that would be more compatible.

But the AAC isn't expanding. This is all moot. Maybe in 10 years things will be different.

Long-term, the AAC will easily be the strongest P5 conference. It won't be close.

But the AAC isn't expanding. This is all moot. Maybe in 10 years things will be different.

Long-term, the AAC will easily be the strongest P5 conference. It won't be close.

They are the usual suspects but BYU and Army are already scratched, Air Force also has said no, Boise took their chips and went home where they cashed in for a better deal. SDSU went wee wee all the way home with Boise screaming all the way (they really wanted to stay). The western wing went with Boise, Air Force, and SDSU, so Fresno and Colorado St are out.

When the AAC is raided again even if someone like the B-12 takes Cinn and BYU for a northern division for example, the AAC is further weakened making it less likely for any Range school to move east to the AAC. Also you have to believe that UConn is in play for a P5 conference one day too. In the end it will probably be the MWC raiding the AAC one day for Texas schools instead of the AAC raiding the MWC.

The American can survive in good shape if it only looses one or a max of two schools from the usual suspects of CINN, UConn, and / or one of the two Florida schools. However the weaker it gets, it less likely that it will be able to draw MWC schools.

URI asked to cancel it because they got another offer for more money and their AD is a UMass grad and former associate AD, so we helped him out.

Not a problem finding another FCS team for 2016.
