Potential new nicknames for North Dakota (not) Sioux
Why not call them the "Political Correctness Corps"?

That's more appropriate for NDSU, as more than half their students are Minnesotans.

We have minority Dakotan too, but enrollment in aviation and aerospace programs draws from all over.

No Dakota has tuition reciprocity with Minnesota, and UND and NDSU are better, more diversified, and cheaper options than public Minnesota schools below UMinn.

In the six New England states, a student from any of the states can get in-state tuition at any of the other five state schools in certain situations. I think it mainly applies if your home state school doesn't offer an academic program that another state school does.

UMass calls it "Regional Tuition" and it's ever so slightly more expensive than in-state, but far less than out of state. And that's the exact situation that comes into play with the program thing.

Its blanket reciprocity with slight tuition changes. N Dakota also has reciprocity with all Rocky Mountain and Pacific states, but there's an application process.

I am sure that UND and NDSU are safety schools for some Minnesotans if they don't get in UMinn. But others don't want a giant urban school, and others are attracted to STEM programs at medium sized schools, which Minnesota is largely lacking except at UMinn.

Those are South Dakota Hills.

Maybe Black Hills St, a DII school, should rename themselves. Much better than Yellow jackets.

SD Mines, which is also in the Black Hills, are the Hardrockers.

Mea Culpa. I've been to the Dakota's but it has been over 50 years ago so they kind of run together in my mind.

Hilarious that "Abdominal Snowmen" makes the cut, but "Abominable Snowmen" doesn't. "Fliers" does but "Flyers" doesn't. "Dragons of Ice" and "Icy Flying Reptiles" do but not "Ice Dragons."

Instead of snowmen, how about blueskins? Or would that offend someone with some sort of genetic disorder or someone who eats too many blueberries?

Actually that's not bad "Blueskins" bullet.

If UND becomes the Flickertails, it should annually play Bemidji and Minnesota for the Northern Rodent Cup.

Call them the "Fighting Sioux" for God's sake. This PC stuff is ridiculous.

It mainly academia pinheads who want Flickertails. It used to be the nickname nearly 100 years ago, but was changed to Fighting Sioux as they were bison (NDSU) slayers. Flickertails has some cultural remnants on campus though, like the Flickertail Follies, a campus variety show. It would never get voted in now, although its also a state nickname.

RE: Potential new nicknames for North Dakota (not) Sioux
North Dakota should have a waiver since the Sioux Tribe locally gave them permission to use The Fighting Sioux. It is like Florida State who got permission by the Seminoles. The Oklahoma Seminole Tribe tried to force them to changed it, but the Florida Seminole tribe gave them permission. There is 2 tribes in North Dakota fighting each other over the name. One wants North Dakota to keep it, and the other one wants it to be dropped. I do not know why Utah Utes not being forced to change their name?

RE: Potential new nicknames for North Dakota (not) Sioux
There's a lot of votes for things that I associate with other states... Bighorns, 7th Cavalry (Montana), Badlanders (South Dakota), Kodiaks (Alaska), Tsunami (any state that's not in the middle of the continent).

I like "Berserkers," "Ermines," "Pronghorn," and especially "Frackers."

My favorite is one that was rejected: "White People"

Why wouldn't it get in? At least it has a history with the school.

Cavalry is now my favorite. 7th Cavalry won't make it.

A number of choice were submitted by NDSU fans. That is obvious!

The most voiced name which was rejected was Fighting Sioux, which had pages and pages of submissions.

My undergrad alma mater (Case) was the Roughriders until we merged with our #2 rival the Western Reserve Redcats in the 70s. Instead of something cool, they decided to name us... wait for it... the Spartans. We use a blue version of Michigan State's logo. How excitedly bland.

The Roughriders would be great for UND but for selfish reasons I'm glad they don't get it.

Roughriders , one word, is still in the running. Rough Riders, two words, was taken off the list because of trademark issues. My mistake.

Flickertails is too much like the hated gophers. Who wants to be a rodent anyway?

North Dakota Tatonka - using the Sioux (Lakhota) word for Buffalo

It satisfies the PC crowd, while still honoring UND's origins.
