They better add Liberty to the list with ASU, ODU, and VCU.

There are plenty of higher level teams that would happily bring him on.

Blocking him from going to schools that are close to his home is what's absurd. I hate when colleges do that, and I would absolutely call out EMU if they did the same thing to a transfer. Let them go wherever they want.

The story was so fresh yesterday do we really have any idea if UB even came out with a "blocked" list? or if that was Nate Oats talking from emotion when Evans approached him. The final say will be Danny White..who only met with Evans late yesterday. I would say absolutely block him from Arizona St and other MAC programs. As for Virginia schools near his home i don't have a major beef unless they are on the schedule and even then, not sure I'd block that. If I'm AD, i do not want kids to feel they can transfer to anywhere at anytime on a whim...but you have to be realistic and not damage someone's future either.

To hear Evans say he will consider UB as long as they grant him his outright release is laughable. He's gone and there are a couple hundred schools he won't be blocked from transferring to.

Many years ago when I was at Toledo we had a guard (Cooper) transfer to BGSU the same year a guard (Kindle) transferred from BGSU to Toledo. Neither school made an issue of it. Let kids transfer wherever they want. This is not the NBA. Whenever new coaches come in they usually run off a few players they do not want. The players should have the same ability to choose a school that has a coach they want to play for (even if it is their former coach).

I'm not sure it is as big a deal for hoops as football, but how would a team like their 2nd team QB moving to another MAC school?

Like, when you redshirt, you can play the QB from your old school in practice and help us with the plays, formations, etc. etc.

White did the right thing. Any kid considering Buffalo will now know that they actually care about what is best for the players. A classy gesture.

Good. As should be the case for any transfer. They're already forced to sit out a year...restricting where they can transfer as well, especially when it includes schools in or near his HOMETOWN, is ridiculous.

I'm glad White ended up taking the high road. I wonder if he would've done so had Evans not said anything about the transfer restrictions on twitter.

There are 12 schools in VA and many more "close to home" for Evans even in higher conferences. If UB was being petty the lsit would be bigger. I suspect there is another reason.

Old Dominion is 20 minutes from his hometown. We are all speculating anyway, but it seemed like pettiness. At least the AD caved and let the kid go wherever he wanted. It was the right thing to do.

this all stinks of Hurley. I hope Hurley tampered and I hope there is proof and the AD lifted the restriction just to set the trap.

RE: ESPN/CNN Breaking News: Shannon Evans Leaving UB
From our student Newspaper:

White said UB Athletics is looking into any kind of “impermissible contact that may have occurred” between Evans and Arizona State. He said if Arizona State committed tampering, it would be an NCAA violation and cause for UB to block Evans from attending the school.

When The Spectrum asked White if he had any reason to believe a violation occurred, White said, “I don’t think it would be appropriate for me to speak about that at this point.”

Now White is apparently releasing him to attend any school.

within hours of being released Evans has offers from Arizona State (surprise), Miami(FL), and Boston College. Boston College only has 2 players returning next year with any college experience and 6 scholarships are still open. They are going to be really bad but Evans would be a starter on an ACC team.

I had the same thought... I'd love for there to be proof and for UB to drop the bomb should Evans go there...

That's just the streak of spiteful bastard in me.

In truth once he leaves UB I don't care for him one way or the other.

This scenario actually played out at WMU a couple of years ago after P.J. took over, when backup QB Anthony Maddie transferred to NIU. There were a few grumbles from Bronco fans back when it happened, but I don't remember any huge outcry over it.

It's worked out relatively well for all parties involved. Maddie returned to his home state (IIRC) to play college football and, though he's not the starter, has a MAC championship ring now. Terrell, meanwhile, has developed into a very respectable QB with a chance to go down as one of the great ones in school history if he can deliver the Broncos a MAC championship in the next year or two.

Really would like to see this whole thing end up biting Hurley in the azz... I think UB will do just fine without that prima donna...

I don't hate Hurley one bit for leaving and if he takes Evans on the level (no tampering) then I will also be fine with him. The guy got UB to the dance in two seasons.

Will UB be just fine? Maybe, but we would have been better next season with Hurley / Evans than Oats / No Evans.

Is there a tampering rule in the NCAA? I know there's one in the NBA. I haven't ever heard of a college coach getting busted for tampering

Buffalo transfer Shannon Evans has committed to Arizona State, sources told CBSSports.com on Friday.

Evans must sit out next season per NCAA rules, but he will have two years of eligibility remaining.

An explosive guard, Evans averaged 15.4 points, 4.6 assists, and 3.2 rebounds last year when current Sun Devils coach Bobby Hurley was at Buffalo.
