College sports name changes since 1960
Help me compile a list. Army just reverted back to "Cadets" from Black Knights.

Some others over the years:

Hofstra: Flying Dutchmen<Pride
Miami University: Redskins<Redhawks
St. John's: Redmen<Red Storm

I know I'm missing a ton, help me out.

Yeah, I had Hawai'i in mind before posting but forgot. Actually Hawai'i is unique in that each individual sport, both men and women, can choose a team name or at least that's what the policy was over the years. The men's basketball team has been known as anything from Rainbows, Rainbow Warriors to just simply Warriors while the women were known as the Wahine.

Also, I believe as a literal extension of the Berkeley campus originally, UCLA was known as Bears before transitioning to Bruins.

I don't think Auburn has ever made up its mind about its mascot. Maybe JR can elighten us. Curt Gowdy used to call them the Plainsmen. Then they are Tigers and War Eagles. Like rock, paper scissors? Plainsmen kill Eagles. Eagles eat tiger cubs. Tigers eat Plainsmen.

^

That's not what I mean, plenty of schools have changed the institutional name.

UCF used to be known as the Citronauts I believe.

UCF used to be Florida tech (ftu) citronauts, then the university of central Florida knights of Pegasus, then golden Knights, the it became just UCF Knights in 2007. The brand change was an attempt to make the name more succinct.

The image of sending oranges into space on giant rockets is unsettling.

RE: College sports name changes since 1960
Fun fact: Besides the eventual replacement Redhawks, other finalists for Miami to replace Redskins were Thunderhawks and Miamis.

Missouri-St. Louis: Rivermen/Riverwomen --> Tritons
North Dakota: Fighting Sioux --> ??? (renaming going on now)
SE Missouri State: Indians --> Redhawks
Greendale: Grizzlies --> Human Beings

I kid on the last one, that's from Community.

Should've stuck with the Citronauts.... Great name!
