Uninformed Public
Today I was at the CVS in Gardendale and a employee behind the counter noticed my UAB hat and said, are you a Blazers fan? I replied yes. Then he tells me he went to the CUSA Championship game, the first Blazer game he has ever attended where he tells how sorry he felt for Ray Watts when the chanting started. He felt the UABOT's put him up to it but it was probably good that it happened so UAB could focus its resources on Basketball instead of a non-supported football team.
I did well to maintain my composure because he was young and there were others listening. I informed the young lad that UAB is large enough to sustain all athletic programs as the Capstone with a major city supporting it and there is legislation that will get passed to give UAB and UAH equal representation. I continued to reiterate until there is equal representation nothing will change and also including a statement with, the football team was on track to when there conference championship in the coming years with Coach Clark. He continued to reiterate his stance that UAB should focus on basketball.
Its amazing after all that has happened publicly that some tend to sway with the PR machine out of T-town or are just plain ignorant to what is in front of them not 60 miles away. God help us!

Gardendale Fire Department is reporting a fire at the CVS Pharmacy. All units responding. A bearded Dragon was observed smouldering and leaving the scene.

That's not unique to the UAB situation. That's most issues, some way more important than UAB athletics.

There's always going to be people in this life that have a different opinion than your own, a different level of understanding. We as obsessed Blazer fans know most all the details, but some simply don't care. It seems like you did a great job keeping your composure & trying to educate the guy. That's all you can do.

RE: Uninformed Public
My wife had to explain to one of her friends what the NCAA Tournament was and what sport it involved. There are some people out there that just don't care. I couldn't name 3 players on the Atlanta Braves roster right now, but I have friends who go to their spring training & could name their 3rd base coach. It's just not on my radar & doesn't impact me not knowing.

However, the fight for #freeUAB DOES impact a lot of people, even if they don't realize it. I really wish the freeUAB chant caught on more than Fire Ray Watts... Watts will retire eventually, but the BOT doesn't change without an educated public, especially if it comes down to a vote.

There is lots of ignorance out there, of all flavors.

One disadvantage of being older, wiser, widely read, and valuing knowledge for knowledge sake is a growing dismay at the ignorance of humanity in general. They don't understand that life is richer with a curious mind, a love of books, and valuing education and knowledge for their own sake. Life is richer for those things, but it does make you depressed that most just don't care to seek and know.

It takes too much effort to form your own opinion. Its easier to just except what the majority thinks even if it's been disprovened

It really doesn't matter if he's Bammer fan or not, uninformed is uninformed period. I know Auburn, Troy, JSU, Samford, USA, and fans of many of schools and non-fans that are not aware of what is really going on at UAB. They see the news and see a program lose it's team because of money and it's pretty cut and dry to them.

I know a very prominent dept. head that works at UA. She could give two rips about UAB and all she had heard was UAB shutdown football due to money. She said to me what UAB people were complaining about if the school couldn't support football?

After I explain to her the real issue, the words out of her mouth was, "I'm not surprise by that and eventually the BOT will throw Watts under the bus because that is what they do. Hire a talking head, pay them well to do their dirty work, then toss him, her, or them under the bus and wash their hands clean of the act."

I know for a fact there are people working at UA that fear losing their jobs because of the individuals they work for that has a connection to the BOT. UA is looking for a new president less than two years after hiring one. And there are several high positions at UA that are unfilled at the moment and I was told it ties directly to the BOT.

I would love for someone to tell these folks that think UAB should just focus on basketball, particularly given the situation this year, that Alabama and Auburn should give up basketball and focus on football.

Interestingly enough, I bet you'd have some folks accept that as a good idea.

I think the majority of their fans would go for that. Basketball and academics is something that takes focus away from football.

I remember when it was all first going down; almost everyone I talked to agreed that it sucked.

A simple quick answer to people who believed the money explanation was-- most college football teams don't make money, but hundreds of universities still find a reason to field a team. If South Alabama can afford a football team, why can't UAB?

That would pretty much get everybody to realize-- good point. Why is UAB the only university that "can't afford football". Then they realize it's not really about the money.

I suspect he is a Bama fan who doesn't give a rip about Bama basketball (not many really care) so he doesn't mind if UAB has a basketball team. However, such fans worry that someday UAB might do something terrible like nab some linebacker that they had their harts set on or in some other way compete against their precious Tide. Can't have that!

But I wouldn't call him "uninformed". He has been brainwashed because he has had Alabama football cr*p drilled into him since he was old enough to sit on the toilet to pop.

I appreciate all of the different view points, I must say it was a matter of time before someone outside of the know or informed was going to make a comment when I wear something supporting a team and University that I believe is good for our local community, well as the state judging the numbers that State Rep. Jack Williams presented to Gov.Bad Bedside Manner.

I imagine the same problem we face with conference affiliation requirements is the reason they have basketball teams. With that said maybe they should cut those programs and face possible expulsion from there conferences. Its apparent 6 years of mediocre performance by UA should be enough to shut that program down using the precedence that has been set with UAB.

Anyone who has seen "Jaywalking All stars" or the late night show where they make up current events and get people on the street to comment on them** know how shallow the "average American's" awareness of the world around them is. Many actively avoid (change stations, channels, etc) having their personal space invaded by news / discussions about current world, national or local events and issues.

**Keep in mind that we only see on TV the ones who signed releases to use their interviews on the show.
