Nope.

NIU has been positioning itself to be marketed as a national 'mid major' powerhouse. Emphasis of home winning streaks and big 10 slayers...of course that game meant something. it was a measuring stick of how our dominance of the MAC translated to other peer mid major teams. wins are important of course, but to be a national mid major powerhouse ala Boise State, you need to finish the deal, otherwise you're just a pretender to that greater throne.

why else is there so much clamoring for "NIU to AAC or Big12" on this board?

for the record, i've never clamored for a conference change, and actually like our regional aspect within the MAC. but i'm not naive that NIU wants to go a certain direction in the national spotlight

I'm curious in what world losing 21-14 is getting smoked? Marshall was just a lot better than NIU.

But for the 100th time, nobody cares about bowl games. Stop acting like they matter.

Being King of the MAC is dominance over the MAC in conference play as well as Championships. The Kings conference championship game drew 692k viewers while the bowl game drew 2.25 million. People care a whole lot more about the bowl game than the MAC games.

It's not a big deal because they lost. Check out what he said before the game.

Still... crappy thing to do... Quote him, but no need to embed a tweet with info of someones identity. No need for that. This is an anonymous board, regardless if something is public on another forum. We should maintain that as members out of respect for the board.

i get it...i would not have done it either, FWIW. but back to the original subject..should being "king of the MAC" be an expectation rather than a hope? And if its an expectation, is it but a smaller step (which diminishes its value) towards a bigger vision or is it more simply 'the goal' with bigger things coming as they may?

Quote:NIU's either the best or the 2nd best mid major foot program over the last 5 years. Just becasue the best Marshall team since Moss beat the worst NIU team since 2009, it doesn't change that.

Yeah -- NIU's consistency to be an upper-tier or elite-tier mid-major every year. I think the concept is, especially when it comes to non-MAC followers or NIU-fans, what is "shocking" would be NIU not winning the West. It'd be like Boise not winning their division in the MW in many people's eyes to the run-of-the-mill college football fan who follows all the scores and such each week, although much fewer care about the MAC so it wouldn't be quite as big of a deal.

While it wouldn't be a Surprise if NIU won the West -- it's not a situation where NIU 'should' be picked to win the West. NIU beating @NW, @WMU, then blowing out BGSU in the championship -- those were the key points last year. Other than that, much of it was figuring themselves out like a freshman girl who lost her boyfriend and is trying beer for the first time. How they will adjust this year, IMO, is truly a test for Rod Carey. If NIU wins the West this year, you can pretty much bank on him getting a contract $$ helper + him leaving in 1-2 years. I would not bet on that happening.

IMO, I see NIU being "the Toledo" for a bit, and depending on luck & home-game situational setup, WMU/Toledo battling it for where NIU would have expected to be.

Don't ever disrespect NIU by calling them "The Toledo," and WMU is a flash in the pan, once pretty boy leaves for greener pastures it's back to the same old Broncos.

Oh, you guys can't hate Toledo that much -- you've been beating them well the past 5 years. WMU's non-conference schedule this year will keep PJ here unless we win the MAC. Yes, PJ is a "pretty boy". 86% of users chosen him as "Hot" in one of their hot-or-not selections on this odd page for famous and apparently semi-famous people: http://www.vipfaq.com/P.%20J.%20Fleck.html . Next year will be the "year of WMU", IMO. PJ Fleck will very well be gone after that, but given his publicity & rise, it will help draw in a good coach and they'll be at where they were under Cubit's Good coaching years -- duking it out for 2nd place and maybe an occasional technical tie for 1st (and the occasional 3rd place with injuries/new recruits/etc).

I see the standings like this in the West:
Toledo 7-1 (1)
WMU 6-2 (2)
NIU 6-2 (2)
BSU 5-3

I think its a year away from "the year of the Bronco". Road games @ Toledo and @ NIU, tough to have a breakthrough year with that. Toledo has to be considered the favorite right now with NIU behind them and WMU just behind NIU. Most of this based on scheduling, scheduling rules

For all grief MD gives everyone else about obsessing over the Broncos, he has no problem predicting 2016 is the "year of the Bronco".

I was quoting toodjsn. You figure NIU loses to graduation next year, Toledo loses a lot as well, and if these WMU classes really are top 15 nationally, common sense would say they should be the frontrunners. Its one thing to make a rational prediction, its another thing to make 50 percent of new threads about WMU football haha

RE: SB Nation: The big 2015 Northern Illinois football guide: Still the king until proven
One of the key reasons why WMU shouldn't be expected to win the MAC this year:

a) OOC schedule is BRUTAL: Michigan State, @Ohio State, @GA-Southern. Overall mentality, higher risk of injuries as a side note too. Tough OOC.
b) Playing @NIU and @Toledo
c) Playing Mac East Champs BGSU and a decent @Ohio team, along with a who-knows Miami. MAC Schedule isn't pretty.

Reasons why WMU should (knock on wood) be expected to be in top-contender form in 2016:

a) OOC schedule is a potential big booster: @Northwestern, @Illinois (who never plays NIU for some reason; WMU old coach half running the show there too), GA-Southern at Home
b) NIU and Toledo at HOME
c) Recruits start warming up and gelling together.

Ok, sailor. You'll be promoted from first mate in no time. I'm surprised by how little effort it took to get you forgetting the Rockets to being a Boat Rowing Bronco.

When has WMU ever had a TOP 15 class. the answer is of course never. top 80 and maybe top 70. But jesus, top 15...stop. And the only reason they are possibly that high for 2016 is because no one has put forth full effort yet for verbals.

To give you even more perspective, WMU's 2015 class, the so called "greatest MAC recruiting class in history" was ranked below both Marshall and honest to god Temple....

so you know, fear that all you want....but I'm guessing NIU will be just fine.
