“McCarthyism”: Dem Rep. Demands Financial Info On Pro-Warming Climate Scientist
Who Questions Humans Role…

Moral of the story: Even if you still espouse warming BS, you better walk lock-step and say it’s because of humans or else the leftists will try and ruin your life. Stalin would be proud. Of course so would Obama.....

Quote:Judith Curry, a decorated climate scientist at Georgia Tech, says research tells her the earth is warming.

But she’s isn’t sure how much of a role humans have played.

For that, Curry says, she has been targeted by members of Congress in a new version of McCarthyism.

“It’s ridiculous,” Curry said in a telephone interview Friday. “It’s just ridiculous.”

Curry is one of seven climate scientists whose universities received a letter from U.S. Rep. Raul Grijalva, D-Arizona, the ranking Democrat on the House Committee on Natural Resources. The letter last week questions their impartiality and demands the schools provide Grijalva financial information about the scientists.

“I write today because of concerns raised in a recent New York Times report,” Grijalva said in the letters, “and documents I have received that highlight potential conflicts of interest and failure to disclose corporate funding sources in academic climate research.”

The New York Times reported that Wei-Hock “Willie” Soon of Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics failed to disclose $1.2 million in research funding from fossil fuels sources such as ExxonMobil and the Southern Company. Soon has claimed global warming can be explained, in part, by variations in the sun’s energy.

Grijalva told the universities he wants responses by March 16.

Once again, the leftists hate women and actual science.

So sad.

That dude DOES NOT want to open that can of worms. If he starts following the money, he's not going to like where the trail leads.

Why do you need to combat them?

Everybody doing research in this area, on both sides, is getting funding from somebody with a dog in the hunt. Just recognize that and take everything with a grain of salt.

There's truth out there. It's probably not in the heart of any research being done by super partisans on either side, but if you look at the full picture you can probably figure out the truth.

My truth is that it probably harms the planet to be putting too much CO2 into the atmosphere, regardless of fractions of a degree one way or the other. So take all the cost-effective and sensible steps that we can--of which there are many--to resolve the problem. And don't get caught up in the hype game. That's only designed to get us to do stupid stuff.

With the way research funding (or lack thereof) works at schools, I don't think you can.

Maybe if the money was issued to the department instead of to a specific instructor to research a specific issue it might mitigate the potential bias.

Did I read that right? So it's either man made global warming or it's no longer funded?

The only skepticism that is being provided are from scientists who are funded by oil interests.

Well duhhhhhh! This is a Casablanca moment. This is a surprise to people? Seriously?

When you're shown to be wrong on this, will you admit it?

I'm guessing no, but perhaps you'll change by then.

Anyway, this isn't McCarthyism, it's more akin to Mao and Stalin.

Here's the skinny on this guy

Quote:Early life, education and career

Raúl M. Grijalva's father was a migrant worker from Mexico who entered the United States in 1945 through the Bracero Program and labored on southern Arizona ranches.[1] Grijalva was born in Tucson, Arizona, and graduated from Sunnyside High School in 1967. He is a 2004 inductee to the Sunnyside High School Alumni Hall of Fame. He attended the University of Arizona and earned a bachelor's degree in Sociology. While at the University, he was a member of Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán (MEChA) which, at that time, was a radical group identified with the separatist “Aztlán ” ideology. Grijalva also served as a leader of the Chicano Liberation Committee and other Chicano groups.

In addition, he was an Arizona leader of the Raza Unida Party. According to the standard history of the party by Dr. Armando Navarro, “Grijalva was so militant that he alienated some members of Tucson’s Mexican-American community. After losing in his first bid for elective office, a 1972 run for a seat on the school board, he began to cultivate a less radical image.”[2][3]

Just another activist who openly works to destroy the US...and now he's found another means.

This is exactly why we should be restricting immigration, these people have no interest in seeing the US continue its success, rather they want to destroy it with the same corrupt practices that plague the hellholes they're leaving.

I think a claim like that should be backed up with a little evidence. I've never heard that reported, even in the most liberal media outlets, and one would think that if it were true it would be brought up at every opportunity.

You think people working there still wouldn't know where the money was coming from.

Owl's right. Sift through all the research stuff - don't take anyone's findings at face value - everyone from both sides takes money from someone and is thus, biased. Do the stuff that's easier and won't lead to us living in huts and shivering in the cold..........

There's plenty of grass roots funding happening.

but I suppose we all have a dog in the fight in some sense.

RE: “McCarthyism”: Dem Rep. Demands Financial Info On Pro-Warming Climate Scientist
Democrats trying to kill grants for any climate scientist who’s not a global warming alarmist

There’s nothing political about science…at least there shouldn’t be. Science should be based on hard-data and proven facts. But for Democrats, they want “science” to be based on who’s getting money from whom.

Quote:Their objective? To find out whether the organizations “are funding scientific studies designed to confuse the public and avoid taking action to cut carbon pollution, and whether the funded scientists fail to disclose the sources of their funding in scientific publications or in testimony to legislators.”

The result is that Democrats find themselves facing the kind of criticism usually reserved for Republicans in academic circles, even at left-leaning institutions such as the University of Colorado Boulder, where environmental studies professor Roger Pielke Jr. is among those under investigation.

“We stand behind him,” said a university official last week, referring to Mr. Pielke, leading the Denver Post to declare in a Tuesday editorial, “CU rightly defends Roger Pielke Jr. against political bully.”

“I think the Democrats, any time you’re trying to enforce group-think or punish a professor for their scientific and legitimate views — and if you listen to this professor’s [views], they sound fairly reasonable, frankly — I think the Democrats look very bad on this,” Denver political analyst Floyd Ciruli said Sunday on KUSA-TV’s “Between the Lines” with Brandon Rittiman.

Mr. Grijalva said in letters to universities that he wants to ascertain whether the professors have financial conflicts of interest, but his probe has lawmakers, academics and scientists outraged by the potential for a “chilling effect” on research.

The professors have challenged the theory that climate change is driving extreme weather events such as hurricanes and blizzards.

“Publicly singling out specific researchers based on perspectives they have expressed and implying a failure to appropriately disclose funding sources — and thereby questioning their scientific integrity — sends a chilling message to all academic researchers,” said Keith L. Seitter, executive director of the American Meteorological Society, in a letter last week to Mr. Grijalva.

If you read that and think, “This is nothing but a political witch hunt,” you wouldn’t be the first to come to that conclusion. Democrats, the supposed “party of science,” are feeling the pressure because increasingly, actual science does not support their political agenda. They’re left with no alternative but to attack the scientists who disagree with them.

This is the same kind of political witch hunt that got Galileo jailed for saying that the Earth revolved around the sun.
