Pastner lost this game a few years ago. His inability to recruit, coach, and develop players has lead to where the program is now. People do not want to admit the if the JJ AND CC class wasn't as talented as it was, the program would be complete in the dumps by now. That class made Pastner a millionaire.

Amazing we were in it at all. Not that Josh did anything spectacular; just not a whole lot he could have done differently to win.

Some people understand the responsibilities of leadership and some people clearly do not.

I understand leadership and was referring only in context of tonight's game with tonights players. Not past 6 years, recruiting, etc. A very narrow opinion. Not many coaches would have won tonight. We got screwed by refs again too. Repeated blows to the face and not only no reviews but no fouls?

No, it's way to easy to clap away and rationalize each step downward.

Agreed. All the more frustrating too. Last year's squad was better than people think.

IMO, that's the difference between the SMU team tonight & the Memphis player on the floor. No doubt Shaq played one of his better games & there was good effort by the guys Memphis had on the floor. I thought the box & one Memphis played was effective at times, keeping Moore in check - but SMU had an answer virtually every time down the floor in the 2nd half - AND THAT IS COACHING. Coaching makes good talent play well together, makes them a team. Good coaching adjusts to what is hindering its productivity, good coaching anticipates, good coaching attacks the weakness of the defense & good coaching takes away the opposition productivity. Coaching builds confidence & produces execution. SMU showed the influence of good coaching & they owned us, even in a competitive game. SMU players played with poise & consistency - and on top of that they are very talented.

Yep. 04-cheers

Yep. Just like Coach K, Self and Cal say-coaching wins basketball games- great players do not. Larry Brown won that one tonight even thought his talent was far less that that of Memphis though he would have liked to be up by more than 6 in last few minutes. He did appreciate shooting 20 plus more three throws than the home team and attributed that to his coaching staff.

BTW, coaching put us in 3 elite 8s under Cal and once in championship game. Amazing what good coaching will do. WE ONLY HAVE 3 PLAYERS ON OUR ROSTER WHO NEED TO BE HERE AS MEMPHIS QUALITY PLAYERS. ( paraphrasing Dan Wolken from Twitter tonight; and he had a lot of agreement.)

This is where Josh has failed this year: not giving us a roster that can win. And please don't start with how many 4-5 star players we gave. They would be sitting bench at most high D1 schools except for about 2-3 players.

His inability to actually coach has failed us as well.

Why want everyone admit it? That was a much more talented team that beat us tonight especially with injuries and Pookie sick.

In defense of Cunningham, a PG will often hold at the top of a 1-4 set if the baseline curls don't materialize or the cutters can't get open. I saw Cunningham dribbling a ton at the top, but often he didn't exactly have great options to go with.

Problem we face is that:

a. Teams know what we like to do (1-4 baseline screens, high 1-4 double screen, a little high low / cross post screen actions) and there is very little effective use of the wings (side tosses of the ball often are simply ineffective attempts.

So we have a schematic problem

b. Our coach is clearly liked by the players and he motivates them to play hard, but they are often in the wrong place. So we also have a preparation problem.

c. We have very nice, high level players, but what we have in depth of talent, we lack in true 5* type guys. Every rotation player we have is a useful and valuable D1 player who could contribute to a championship contender, but all of them have negatives that mean they can be effectively schemed out of plays... So we have a small talent and/or developmental issue.

>>>

In short, we have a lot of issues.

Team played hard tonight however, I'm going to enjoy that even as I remain frustrated with season. Very proud of the effort tonight.

Apparently coaches are in a blood brother society. I’m almost ready to believe Iverson’s re-tweet that players are used as scapegoats.

Yes some of the players didn’t play well including Austin but Pastner’s in-game coaching last night was one of the worst I have ever seen on the D1 level. We had already played and lost to SMU and what does he start with against one of the most physical team in the country?

A 3 guard lineup. No Shaq and the game is over in the first 10 minutes. If there are any idiots around here #1 is the CEO of Tiger basketball.

Maybe it’s because a HOF coach recruited, developed, and knows what to do with them.

If you think SMU is that talented what about the other teams in the top 25? What are the odds of a coach recruiting 2 top 10 classes in a row and underachieving with them?

More excuses. Yes, Markel was injured. What really p!ssed me off on that whole situation was, there's Markel knocked on his @ss, hurt, and no foul called. Instead of Pastner going off on the officials, and even taking a tech to show his players that he has their back and will fight for them, he's over there clapping and having a low key discussion with the refs. I see why the players don't respect him.

Pookie? Are you serious? Hell, there's been games when he wasn't sick, that he never saw the floor.

My seats are behind the Tiger bench. What was the very strong exchange between Pastner and AN? Both were in each others face and some of the players had to calm AN down. Guess that's why AN sat a large portion of the 2nd half.

What was up with Burrell leaving the floor at about the 3-4 minute mark at the end of the game, heading towards the locker room. Saw him go to check in, but was brought back by Pastner, you could tell he was p!ssed and kept walking.

What was up with mass exodus of fans with about 3 minutes to go in the game?

Troubling times for a proud program. Time for a change.

Posts like this are as stupid as the "with the top 5 recruiting classes Pastner should win more -- FIRE HIM" posts.

It was Josh's doing his job that got the recruits when we had better talent than other teams, it is also Josh's doing his job when we have less talent than SMU.
