Interesting column by Calkins about Coach Pastner's desciplining the players
Geoff Calkins: Got to admire Pastner's principles

Memphis forward Austin Nichols was late for the team bus to the airport. As a consequence, he didn’t start Sunday’s game against Central Florida.

Good article, and I support Josh on his discipline of Austin. Nobody should be treated differently. Now, on some of his other decisions ehh?

Nichols played 34 mins vs UCF on Sunday.

For the season, Nichols is averaging 30 mins per game.

Now that's tough love...no doubt Pastner showed him.

PS. If Memphis was playing at SMU, would Pastner kept Nichols out of the starting lineup and/or played him more mins than he was averaging?

I've been trying since January to pay for my online subscription to the CA..
I've emailed them 3 or 4 times already with no response.
I keep getting a 'no such account exists with that email address' bs answer.

Knowing Pastner I would say yes.

If you put in place a rule, you have to stand behind it.

However, Rules need to advance the goals of the organization.

In this instance, not starting for being late to the team bus seems appropriate. But we have had waaaay too many game suspensions this year.

Those 34 minutes played include the overtime. So Nichols played 34 of the possible 45 minutes. Put another way, Nichols sat 11 minutes.

MEMPHIS plays SMU on Thursday, so we'll see who starts, who plays "xx" minutes, and other statistical anomalies that fascinate you.

All I know is the TIGERS swept UCF....again. Quit whining about how many minutes our All Conference player was on the hardwood and accept the OT whipping.

Technically our all conference player is Shaq. He was pre-season first team. Obviously Austin will be all conference at the end of the year.
Pastner certainly has a pattern with all conference big men with Tarik and Shaq and it's not very good.

Actually, BOTH Austin and Shaq were AAC preseason 1st team.

I never had a problem with his discipline. Sometimes the suspensions are a bit much but at least he's fairly consistent.

The problem is in other areas. But that's another case for another thread.

Yes.

He would have.

As a matter of fact Burrell missed the entire SMU game...at the same time that Iverson was booted and King was injured.

So...nice smart assed attempt at making points here, but simply wrong.

Nasal would have done better to credit Pastner for his principles, without the derisive stick his finger in the air nonsense about the team not winning...but that would be asking quite a bit for someone begging for statues honoring players who have led the very good right now NBA team to...three playoff series wins in 4 years (sound familiar).

No. This is not even in the same universe as making the NCAA tournament and getting trounced twice in the rd of 32.

RE: Interesting column by Calkins about Coach Pastner's desciplining the players
No.

It is worse.

Over half the NBA makes the playoffs every year.

Some NBA teams do not get trounced at home in a game 6...like ours did last year, with the opportunity to advance, then follow that up with a road trouncing in game 7. And fewer still choke away a 24 point 4th quarter lead in a playoff game then following that up with a desultory HOME playoff game 7 loss that same series (LA Clippers).

We get it- and the better thing to do is embrace the fact that the Grizzlies have been good for a while and so far this year have been really good and may be title contenders. And even making the playoffs is a big deal for a formerly moribund franchise.

But in the face of the relentless emphasis on the negative, my above accurate critiques of the professional team are accurate.

Done.
