Glad you are okay. I've never had to confront a thief directly like that. It's hard to imagine exactly how I might react in that situation.

Since other people are sharing their personal stories, I feel like chiming in with my own experiences . . . .

A couple of years ago, my parents' house was broken into while my mother was at home alone. She got a good look at the guys as they were escaping out the back door, where they had broken through the glass to get inside. She ran out the front door and called the police. Thankfully, the police caught most of the a-holes as they were waiting for a getaway car to pick them up. We found some of the stuff the thieves had stolen (they dumped it in a neighbor's backyard), but the police were not able to recover a necklace that had belonged to my great grandmother.

One more story: My wife (who was my girlfriend at the time) had her apartment broken into. The thieves stole her DVD player and a safe which had nothing of monetary value in it. What it had in it was medals that her grandfather had earned from serving during World War II. They had the gall to go into her refrigerator and open up a couple of sodas. Fortunately, my wife was not home when the scum broke in. She and I weren't living together at the time.

Breaking into people's homes is a cowardly act. It angers me just thinking about the pain that these idiots caused my wife and my parents in these situations.

Do you own a gun? If no, you should indeed be scared! I am glad you are safe this time. If you had a gun, you could defend your self. 04-cheers

Glastonbury - The same town Kevin Ollie calls home. My house is far from his in regards to location and price point though... The police said not a single home in my neighborhood has had something like this happen in about 10 years.

I have a full size Beretta Px4 in 40 cal. It is very accurate and really like the decocker on it. My nephew has a Px4 Storm SubCompact in the 40 cal and he loves it. It is nice pistol.

That PX4 is my favorite pistol. Mine is in the compact size....which really isn't so compact but perfect for inside the belt carry. Crazy accurate.

I have locks and gun safes. My bedside pistol is keep in a small bedside safe. You can never be to safe with guns. I never leave a gun out even unload around my grandchildren. If you have not been trained, then get some training, if you are going to carry a fire arm.

The Glock .40's are great guns for the price and ease of maintenance.

On your night stand, they have fingerprint scanner gun safes so if you dont have the print, you cant get in.

thanks for that. One of the reasons I've been holding off purchasing a pistol. Frankly speaking I didn't grow up around them and have only shot them a handful of times. I'm interested for sure.

just get a small caliber revolver with a long barrel and learn how to shoot it. then if you get the fever get go big. if you get to be a good shot you dont need more than a 22 on an intruder, unless you wanna make a mess.

Agreed, it's the first gun I ever bought because of that. Got it when I still lived in Orlando and people were/are doing home invasions on students. Now I live in Ca and have some little ones so I was thinking of getting the PX4 bc of the safety but also bc it's smoother than firing the Glock.

The decocker is nice. The safety is nice too on a range but not for home defense or concealed carry.

Safeties are one more thing to worry about when you may not have time to fumble.

Get a tabletop coded or bio safe. Only you can open. Load it. Store it. When you pull it out, you are not messing with safeties.

Everybody has a favorite caliber and weapon. I have a few. Personally, I love a glock 9mm. Fits my hand perfectly, easy recoil, i like the sights etc.

But weapons are like cars, a lot of them out there and a lot of good ones. Just because your buddy is a "chevy guy" doesn't mean that a ford or toyota wouldn't fit you better. Go to the range and try out as many as you can. You'll find brand, style and caliber that you are comfortable with.

IMHO, stay away from a .22lr Yes, any weapon can defend you, but if you can comfortably handle a .380/9mm or .40 please go with one of those. .22 is a choice, but not the first choice of most knowledgeable gun owners for self protection.

A 32 ACP is a better choice than a 22LR and easily handible even for a women. 07-coffee3

Some good advice in this thread. Whatever a person gets learn how to hit a target otherwise just throw an unloaded pistol at the intruder regardless of caliber, you'll hurt them worse than missing them with a bullet

I want to let you know that I agree about the 22lr. However, most are probably not practiced enough to be deadly with this caliber. This will get the job done.
