Got measles?
This disease was eradicated 15 years ago. Now it's back because of the parents who won't immunize their kids. And those disease-ridden illegal kids aren't helping the situation.

Society progresses at an uneven pace: two steps forward, one step back. This is one step back.

Don't forget the anti-vaccination nitwits. Remember, this started at DisneyLand.

Yep, hope those folks are happy now. Of course they still bow to Jenny McCarthy.

It had to get to Disneyland somehow. And as much as Id love to blame the antivax Hollywood liberals, I doubt they brought it to Disneyland from their gated communities.

Measles was never eradicated world-wide. It still exists and spreads in underdeveloped countries.

Even in the US, where the disease is considered eradicated, there are still a few cases annually (around 60) but due to vaccination beginning in the 1960s never expanded beyond a few isolated cases until this year. The US has had more cases of measles in 2015 (just one month in) that in an entire year previously. The choice to not vaccinate is contributing to the current spread of the disease.

The measles is said to have been brought to Disneyland over the Christmas break by a foreign visitor to the theme park from a country where measles isn't considered eradicated.

RE: Got measles?
A very good explanation of the measles outbreak world-wide and the current outbreak in the US is explained here:

http://www.npr.org/2015/01/30/382716075/...aign=world

As most people anticipated, those who chose to not vaccinate are the big problem with the current outbreak. With the number who chose to not vaccinate, counting on herd immunity for protection, it was only a matter of time before this happened. They bought into the stupid fear mongering by non-medical professionals like Jenny McArthy and other homeopaths, and have now put their children (some of whom are adults now) at grave risk of catching measles and the complications associated with the disease.

It was declared "effectively" eradicated in the U.S., meaning no more mass outbreaks were ever expected (even though there may have been a few people still infected).

But then some illegals get into the country and there's a small segment of the population that refuses vaccinations, and ... voila; it's back.

I'm not panicked. I'm fully vaccinated including boosters. (although of the new cases, two are people who were vaccinated who have contracted it although it is not known if they were fully vaccinated.)

For those who aren't vaccinated, it is a scary time especially for children. 1 in 20 children who contract will get pneumonia and die. 1 in 1000 will get encephalitis (brain swelling) and suffer brain damage or hearing loss.

From the one person infected in Disneyland there are now 84 people infected.
When you are a carrier you don't know it for a few days before you exhibit symptoms and can easily expose others since the contagion is airborne. Measles is considered the disease easiest to spread out of control due to its airborne delivery.

Examples of how easily this could spread nationally:

One of the recently infected road an Amtrak train in NY. How many people did that person expose in a confined train car?

Another went to a Costco in the Bay Area. How many people did that infected person expose walking the aisles looking at merchandise?

To those who choose to not vaccinate, is the tiny risk associated with vaccinating (and the risk is infinitesimal) worth the real possibility of your child getting measles and possibly dying or being permanently damaged by encephalitis?

Seems like their decision, not mine. My decision was to get my child vaccinated. Not my place to tell my neighbors what to do. And this story is blown way out of proportion. Our parents all got measles just like we all got chicken pox. Not the end of the world if you are under medical supervision.

Measles will always be around, it's just that we had the means to prevent all Americans from getting the virus. Of course, we have some knuckleheads that think they know better than their doctors and decided not to get vaccinated. So, that measles virus that is always out there can now find new human hosts.

Considering how many people die in car accidents, I'm not sure how this is even on the radar.
