winning is hard!

The team that scored 2 points "just didn't make shots" and the other team is well coached with good players. Not sure that the 2 coaches are dear friends, though.

The winning coach is a future Hall of Famer too

so, shouldn't most any cheerleader squad score more?

Yes. Any cheerleader should be able to score more than a player.

If you can only score 2 points AS A TEAM in an ENTIRE GAME, I would question calling them "players".

You missed it, but that's OK.

RE: Beating a high school team 161-2. These Memphis board fans - your thoughts.
I coach some youth sports, and my wife told me about this game. My response was, if the coach left his starters in, continued to press, and did not tell them to hold the ball, work on passing, and try for difficult shots, then the coach is unethical. But, that is not what the coach did. He benched his starters at the half and had his bench work the clock. Now, he could have done other things, such as flip the forward to guards and guards to forward, etc. But the coach even talked to the opposing coach about the disparity in talent before the game. This is not poor sportsmanship. One team was just that much better. It had better players. It happens.

I do see this on the field. I coach soccer, younger players, admittedly. I have one girl who is really, really good. She is strong, fast, and smart for her age. When she is on, she is a goal-scoring machine. In one game last year, she was ripping shots at the other teams goal, scored two and had several bounce (which sounds a lot less aggressive than it was) off the crossbar. The ref came over and asked me her age. I told him. She scores again. The opposing coach stops the game and complains. I explain her age and ask him if he is really going to make an issue about a girl's physical development. We were up 3-0. He then puts a ringer (easily 5 years older) into his goal. We continued to score. Not just this really good player. Once we hit 5-0, we went "turtle". I told all of my forwards to stay on the defense and ordered my mids only to dribble to opposing corners and hold the ball. I wasn't going to score more points. There was no point in running the score up (though the other coach deserved it). Nevertheless, one of my defenders had a breakaway and made a long shot (her first goal). It happens.

The point is that sometimes the natural disparity in talent is so large that a coach cannot stop a on the field slaughter. All you can do is pull players, switch positions, play defense, and pray you don't score.

You do not continue to press full court while up by close to 100 points in the first half unless you are intentionally attempting to embarrass the other team. Not the life lesson his players should be learning. Sports used to build character, now it exposes it or the lack of it.

Before anyone attempts to defend him think back to how we felt when Freeze went for a late TD in our game after the game was won.

I wondered about that. Why do it? Is your team's press going to get better by 'practicing' it against such inferior opponents?

That's a shame, because Neinabor is a really good guy--a dear friend, a great coach, runs great sets and is a future hall of famer.

A similar situation happened in Dallas last night only it was a boys high school basketball game and the score was 117-10. In this case, the losing team was a Class A school last year that was moved up to 4A this year due a ruling involving private schools. Here is the story from the NBC TV affiliate in Dallas. In this case you will see a TV story and a totally different approach to the situation.

In addition to pressing he also didn't pull his starters until the second half, when they were up 103 points. Anyone know why? The coach said he wanted to get his team 'ready' for the competition they'd meet in the tournament. That sound legit?

I doubt playing this team was preparing any team for anything meaningful. Pulling the starters earlier would have made a lot more sense. When is it you discover even your bench warmers should be playing? When the coach can perceive the moment when his team is dominant is my answer and the magical time is not always and forever and never to be changed....half time.

That was ridiculous and poor sportsmanship by the coach who proved nothing except he is a jerk. What does he think that is impressive? He really readied his team for stiff competition.

But that's not what the 'winning' coach said. He pressed and played his starters the entire first half against a woefully over-matched opponent in order to 'get them ready' for conference play. Playing such a vastly inferior team does that?

I didn't see the game, so I don't know if they were pressing blah blah blah....but if he benched his starters at halftime, what else are you supposed to do.

Let the other team play 5 on 0 is better, or hey don't shoot at all, or just let them get a layup every time.

What is it teaching them? Don't be so good?

You are trolling but it is an actual sporting event to the girls and their parents and friends attending the game.
