That turnover was killer. ODU was starting to reach more and foul but we give up the TO and fast break layup. Hard to come back now.

Amazing we have hung so relatively close on the road given the humongous rebounding (41 vs. 23) and free throw (24 vs. 6) disparity and advantage for ODU.

The announcers are calling it a "very nice win" for ODU and said that Rice was a tough defense to play.

Without depth and size particularly inside if we don't shoot 35%+ from 3 we have a slim chance to win. Seth had an off night scoring but Max stepped up and hopefully the last few games have helped him regain his scoring touch. Without Rivers we have to have Max, Seth, and Marcus contribute 15-20 points a piece and then hope Andrew and Bishop can chip in 15-20 between the two of them. At least we cut down the TO's tonight but as expected we were down big on the boards. Still considering ODU was #25 a week ago a 10 point loss on the road isn't all that bad.

Women lose 62-55. I had turned on OwlVision early and Rice was up something like 26-14 and ODU was turning over the ball frequently. Went away for a while and ODU had taken the lead and was cruising. Haven't seen the stats but guessing that after we scored 26 or so in the first 10 minutes we completely went into the tank. Looks like a long sad season.

Coach Rhoades after the game:
"Disappointing. We didn't get to the foul line at all-gotta do a bettr job at that.
"They stuck to Seth more than other teams have. A lot of times that happens and you're not as aggressive. They took him off the 3 point line."
"You just do it (put this behind you.) There's no excuses. We;re not making excuses. I've said that from day 1. We've gotta pull some of these games out."
"Go down to Charlotte in 2 days and see,"

From the postgame, it sounds like the team took a lot of bad shots.

Let's be honest. You posted this because you are featured.
Was that Antarius next to you? IIRC he said he had made some games there in your group.

I was at the game - I don't think we were taking bad shots but just went ice cold after a decent start. Plus we're a horrible free throw shooting team. At one point late in the game, we had four fouls called on ODU in 10 seconds (three of which resulted in trips to the free throw line at least) and we only scored 1 point in that stretch.

If they kept tally of individual students' attendance using smartphone technology, for instance, they could in effect have a "rewards program" similar to how Casinos reward their frequent-players! It works for the casinos (and to some extent the airlines as well.) How hard would it be to implement and publicize it to the students?
This was attempted a few years ago (2010-2011?) called, appropriately, Rice Rewards. Students were given a card (think credit card) with a barcode on it and could get it scanned at all the various sporting events they attended. There was a tiered system for the perks they could receive for enough events attended, with prizes such as a t-shirt, rolling ice chest, and football jersey. It failed miserably. It was essentially dead by the end of fall semester and wasn't even attempted in the spring.
More recently, there have been competitions such as the Centennial Cup and Homecoming Cup that have awarded points to the various colleges for every 5 students who show up to a game and get their picture taken. Unfortunately, those only lasted ~a month, which doesn't really do much long-term. Also, for the colleges that didn't really care to compete, it didn't do much of anything.
Really? Did not recall that. My feeling is that it might work better for basketball than football initially.
2010 and 2011 football we were 4-8 and 4-8.
Also, Braun's hoops teams were not playing the most exciting style of basketball. IMO I think Rhoades' team style of play might be more enticing?
Couldn't say as to Greg Williams' women's team.
Would like to see them try it again. Also, clearly the prizes offered were not deemed enough incentive to the students, so you'd have to up the ante and what the giveaways were. Nice food prizes, and survey the students themselves a few times on what they would actually want to actually come out to the games.
The athletic department founder of the program left, so no follow through on any of it.
If I were implementing such a program today, I'd make it achievement based, like on the XBOX or Playstation(or Steam). Achievements are worth points that can be easily redeemed for something useful, like maybe food credit or bookstore credit. At certain achievement levels, you get a T-shirt to mark the accomplishment that you can proudly wear around campus.
Achievements can be things like:
Attend at least 5 home football game - Football Booster
Attend all football home games - Football Booster MVP
Attend at least 3 different sporting events - Athletic sampler
"" - Baseball MVP
"" - Basketball MVP
Attend at least 1 men's and 1 women's sporting event - No Gender Bias
etc. Better names can be had(I am terrible at naming things). Even rolled up super achievements like acquire Football MVP, Basketball MVP, and Baseball MVP, everyone achieving this gets a free dinner with athletes and coaches and Dr. K at the end of the year.
In any type of contest like this, it's a mistake to have winners and losers, like in that competition with the colleges because once people figure they can't win, they will stop. Systems where anyone reaching certain milestones is a winner is better for participation. Also the rewards need to be useful and easily redeemable.
How about extending Owl Club benefits (where relevant) to undergrads that meet those targets? Likewise, post-graduation, if they met targets for three years at Rice, upgrade their Owl Club benefits one level in each of those years?

Good game, Rice has some players that seem to be able to take advantage of our mistakes. They came to play and gave a solid effort, just need to work at getting into paint more. Mike will have you guys playing better, sooner than later.
Marcus Evans, of Cape Henry, was nominated to the McDonald's All-American Game, he's been playing real well this season. He's a player who does the little things it takes to win.

RE: Men's Hoops: Rice at Old Dominion 1/15
Seth really had trouble turning the corner when he did try to penetrate off the line. Rice really lacks that guy to penetrate and be a threat to score, and really they need 2 or 3 of them. It seemed to me, in this game, that ODU can (and did) play Rice to start penetration off the pick and rolls, but if Rice got into the paint, ODU could play it as though it was for Rice to kick it back out and not take it in. Makes it easier to defend the pick and roll if you're not going to be a threat to attack the rim.
And that's a huge part of why Rice doesn't get to the free throw line, too. That, and that Rice doesn't emphasize the offensive rebound (at least not tonight) for getting fouled on putbacks, instead choosing to make sure 2 or 3 guys are back and don't concede a possible fast break the other way. They did a good job forcing ODU to run half-court offense and not even allow secondary breaks.
I can pick away at this stuff for a while, but in the end, it was solid effort. I thought the officiating was halfway decent - sure, there were blown calls, but it seemed to me that they found a way to balance things out in the end. To lose only by 10 to a borderline top 25 team (kind of like the Texas game, where Texas probably is a top 25 team) makes me feel pretty good about this team. That's the profile of a team that's top 150. Unfortunately, they're also losing to the bad teams, so fix that and get the results, and Rice may have something. (Sound familiar? )
