Most people are acting like Koenning has been terrible the last ten years. That is simply not true. He's had one bad year. I don't know any SBC teams that consistently rank as high as his defenses over the last five years.
'03 Troy - 42nd
'04 Troy - 10th
'05 Clemson - 11th
'06 Clemson - 16th
'07 Clemson - 10th
'08 Clemson - 13th
'09 Kansas State - 46th (improved from 110th in '08)
'10 Illinios - 48th (improved from 96th in '09)
'11 Illinois - 15th
'12 North Carolina - 53rd
'13 North Carolina - 43rd
'14 North Carolina - 119th
Compare:
'14 Louisiana - 59th
'14 South Alabama - 63rd
'14 Appalachian State - 72nd
'14 Texas State - 77th
'14 Arkansas State - 79th
He will be likely be as good as any here in the long run. Even his first two North Carolina defenses rank higher than most of the top ranking SBC schools. Georgia Southern is the only team in the conference with a good defense, ranked at 34th.
He has been much better than Troy's 101st ranking over the last four years. Which for us, is very promising. Koenning's last year at UNC could be attributed to any number of factors. But obviously our SBC brethren here would like it to be that he can no longer coach. That is most likely not the case.

Wayne Bolt had three years of defense after Troy, and they all ranked in the 100's before becoming Director of Football Operations at Auburn. Koenning has clearly had much more experience after Troy, all but one ranking 53rd or better. Big difference. Bolt was a old school hire made with little to no budget left. Koenning is legit coordinator that is reflective of our new 1.2 million money pool for assistant coaches.
He will be paid more at Troy than he was at UNC.
