Coach Brown talks about his first 3 weeks on the job.

After that, it was all about recruiting. Brown even put together a special recruiting weekend for UAB players. With the in-state program shutting down, UAB players are able to transfer and immediately be eligible.

“I think it’s really a tragedy,” Brown said. “UAB was one of our rivals. I feel for those guys. They had a really good year. Coach Clark and those guys did a really good job. I feel bad for those guys. We’ll end up getting a few of the players. It’ll be a small number. We signed three mid-year guys, all on defense. Our scholarship numbers are low on defense. I think we’ll add a couple UAB kids on the defensive side of the ball. But we want to build our program through high schools, especially the Alabama high schools. We’re going to sign a few of those guys, but it won’t be a ton.”

Oh he knows how to recruit them too... One reason for our success back in the 00s... Get ready for the old Troy to make a return.

He's really been working on landing Alabamas leading HS rusher. Hope he picks us.

If only the SBC hadn't improved significantly since those days, otherwise you might be right.

We got a lot of rebuilding to do... Next year might be a 6-6 or 7-5 type of year if we do it right.... Year 2 is when we will likely be competing for the top.

We are also a little behind in recruiting due to the coaching change.

We should have one of the top offenses next year. Defense is what needs the biggest rebuild.

RE: Coach Brown talks about his first 3 weeks on the job.
Brown recently hired Vic Koenning as his defensive coordinator — the position Brown said would be his most important hire. Koenning has previous experience at Troy, but the biggest factor was Koenning track record of quick turnarounds. The Trojans were No. 113 in scoring defense last year.

“Vic was here in 2003-04 and the last year he was here, he had a top-five defense,” Brown said. “He went to Clemson, had a top-25 defense five years in a row. He goes to K-State and has one of the biggest turnarounds on defense that year. He had a similar turnaround at Illinois. He’s got a lot of experience. He was a head coach at a young age. That was another factor. I’m excited about it. He’s excited about it.”

Koenning wasn't too hot in recent years, was he? I recall Trojans thinking the return of Wayne Bolt would be glorious.

Troy will benefit as much as anyone from our demise. One less team to recruit against should help them, Southern Miss, and USA.

Vic had many years of success after Troy. Wayne bolt had almost zero success after he left. Big difference...

Vic had 1 bad year at UNC and could be contributed to his scholarship limitations among other issues within that program

Most people are acting like Koenning has been terrible the last ten years. That is simply not true. He's had one bad year. I don't know any SBC teams that consistently rank as high as his defenses over the last five years.

'03 Troy - 42nd
'04 Troy - 10th
'05 Clemson - 11th
'06 Clemson - 16th
'07 Clemson - 10th
'08 Clemson - 13th
'09 Kansas State - 46th (improved from 110th in '08)
'10 Illinios - 48th (improved from 96th in '09)
'11 Illinois - 15th
'12 North Carolina - 53rd
'13 North Carolina - 43rd
'14 North Carolina - 119th

Compare:

'14 Louisiana - 59th
'14 South Alabama - 63rd
'14 Appalachian State - 72nd
'14 Texas State - 77th
'14 Arkansas State - 79th

He will be likely be as good as any here in the long run. Even his first two North Carolina defenses rank higher than most of the top ranking SBC schools. Georgia Southern is the only team in the conference with a good defense, ranked at 34th.

He has been much better than Troy's 101st ranking over the last four years. Which for us, is very promising. Koenning's last year at UNC could be attributed to any number of factors. But obviously our SBC brethren here would like it to be that he can no longer coach. That is most likely not the case.

Wayne Bolt had three years of defense after Troy, and they all ranked in the 100's before becoming Director of Football Operations at Auburn. Koenning has clearly had much more experience after Troy, all but one ranking 53rd or better. Big difference. Bolt was a old school hire made with little to no budget left. Koenning is legit coordinator that is reflective of our new 1.2 million money pool for assistant coaches. He will be paid more at Troy than he was at UNC.

I doubt we see ever see another five title run, but in a year or two we will be back to competing for championships year in and year out.

He was paid 250k at UNC correct?

To pay more than that at Troy will make him the highest paid Assistant coach in the SBC by a good bit.

I could have sworn I saw where Arkansas State's DC was making 274,000. I may have misread that. For now, I'll backtrack on my statement. I'd read that Troy will pay him more than he was making at UNC, but that may be incorrect. Let's and wait and see when the numbers come out. My apologies.

He may very well be making more at Troy than UNC.

Not that it really matters.

I think the combination of Vic Koenning and Tulanes old Co DC Jon Sumrall will vastly improve our defense. Jon Sumrall was a key coach for their defense and Tulane defense has been a key part of their success in recent years.... Jon Sumrall has also had offers to become head DC at SDSU but turned that job down. He's qualified to be a DC as well.

2011 I believe. Though some on this board say Koenning can't win without Clemson players.
