Too bad Amtrak no longer runs from New Orleans to Florida. I think it went to Orlando, or maybe Jacksonville. That would have still left a pretty good rental car ride.

20 mins as the crow flies. An hour in Miami traffic
Costs $3.75 to ride the Tri Rail from Ft Lauderdale Airport to Miami International Airport. Schedule is included at trirail.com.

RE: Travel to Miami
I have been talking to someone locally with an airlines and look for an announcement tomorrow for a flight out of Memphis for the Miami Bowl. The flight will leave Monday morning (the day of the game) and leave Miami about 2 hours after the game to return to Memphis. They are still working on all of the flight details and will announce everything tomorrow. They are still finalizing the price per person, but it will probably be around $550 - $650 per person. Not the best price, BUT if you only have that one day off or worried about the cost of hotels, rental cars/cabs, food, etc....this might be an option for you. Just passing the information along. I will post the link or details once I get them.

That would be a tremendous opportunity...I still can't pull it off (short here at work that week), but I've been wondering if someone would step up.
That's what...about a 2.5 hour flight?

There could not be much in life more painful than a bus trip from Memphis all the way to Miami. It would probably take 2 days at least. Heck, it's 20 hours on Amtrak from here (Raleigh) to Miami.

RE: Travel to Miami
If you have 3 days then drive! For those on the tightest of budgets and going strictly for the game:
2100ish mile round trip from Memphis/15ish hour drive
2158 miles / 25mpg = 86.32 gallons
86.32 gallons x $2.30 = $198.54 so around $200
Leave Sunday morning and drive 10 hours to Osceola National Forest in Lake City, FL and tent camp for $6. (10:15 from Bartlett, 682 miles, Memphis to Birmingham to Atl to Lake City).
Leave early Monday morning and drive almost 6 hours to Miami via I-95 S (5:45, 397 miles to Marlins Park) for the game. Someone mentioned getting the Sunpass for the toll ($5 if I understood correctly).
Buy the $45 "obstructed" seats off the bowl game website (you should be able to move to an unobstructed view due to potential low attendance, if not atleast you're there!)
Not sure on parking just yet...After the game go back to Osceola National Forest and tent camp for another $6. Get up Tuesday and drive back the 10 remaining hours.
$200 gas
$12 lodging
$5 (?) Sunpass toll
$30 (?) parking
$45 ticket
Split with one person and that's about ($247 / 2) $124 + $45 for your ticket and you're going to Miami for about $170 plus food.

2.5 hours is about right. I think they want to leave by 8am (still working on the time). They will fly back to Memphis about 2 hours after the game is over.

Just get drunk before you get on the bus. Sleep all the way to Miami.

Please buy your tickets through the University of Memphis ticket office. We have an allotment that we must sell. If you buy a ticket through the Bowl's website our school does not get credit for the sale.

How many tickets are in our allotment?
Also, has anyone gotten a lead on the payout?

Yeah, there are some unanswered questions unless they're on another thread.
What is our ticket allotment and what sections are they in?
Any word on payout?

Any update on this? It's looking like the one-day charter option is my only way of going to the game.

I travel a lot and find this sight is helpful in looking at combinations that may work.
http://matrix.itasoftware.com/search.htm
I see Monday one way morning flights from MEM for around than $350 or less arriving before 1 PM and return flights 7 pm or later for about the same into and out of MIA which is closer and easier to get to Marlins Stadium than FLL. Very few matching airline flights for same day that will work.
I hope that helps.... See everyone there!

Southern Airways Express was trying to put something together, but they were unable to find a big enough plane for what they were looking for to go to Miami. She just sent me an email and said it was going to be close to $700 a person for the one day trip. They did everything they could, but they could not find a big big enough in time to make it work. All of the planes they normally use are a lot smaller and normally fly regionally. Several of us are sad they could not make it work. That was our only way to go to the game.

you can still do it, but would have to get to/from the stadium on your own.
Just priced it on priceline.com
One way: Delta MEM to FLL 6a-12p flight, $294 on 12/22
One way: United FLL to MEM 7:05p-10:59p, $195 on 12/22
hmm... may have to have a serious discussion with the wife tonight...

7pm flight from Fort Lauderdale will cut it very close. The game won't even end before 5:30pm (at the earliest). You would have to leave the game around 5pm to make sure you made your flight from FLL.
