Self has a national championship. I'm pretty sure he's proven himself in the area of motivating and developing players.
And Tarik didn't do any more for him than he did for us.
Maybe, just maybe, Tarik is having more success at the NBA level because the refs don't call a foul every time a big happens to come in contact with another player.
I mean, Tarik made a lot of silly fouls, reaching in, slapping at the ball, but he also had a lot of fouls called on him when an opponent jumped into the bottom of his arm or drove into his chest. Guard-loving college refs have ruined the game.
That's a good post and you make good points but I have no doubt that if Tarik would've signed with a top notch coach (Self, Izzo, Cal, Boeheim, Donovan, etc) out of high school, he would've been developed into a very good college player. Pastner couldn't develop a quality big if his life depended on it. Look at Shaq and Nichols. They are floundering.
Going into year 6 no big has vastly improved under Josh. Dude has a small ball mentality which means you’re going to get you’re a$$ kicked at the final dance. Now it appears he can’t develop guards either because so far none on this team can either dribble or take it to the rim.
I don’t blame Tarik for leaving and under the same circumstances I would have left too.

And yet, he didn't trust Black at all; less than Pastner did. Spot on champ.
Yeah, spoken by a dude who didn't like Tarik from jumpstreet.
BTW Stammers how do you feel now after saying all of your crap about Tarik and he has made it to the next level and is playing well? Time for you to eat some of this…

Trusted him enough to be the best player on the court final game of the season. 19 and 10.
Did he have a choice.

RE: Black
I just love the CHRISTMAS SPIRIT that is being shown in these posts. I have no feelings about Tarik being good, average, or great. I am glad he is having success in the pro league but his college days just did not predict his success. He probably matured with age in his thought process.

Black is starting ahead of "there" center? I didn't "reconize" that. Incredible. Did you know that Bill Self thought so highly of Black that he played 10 or less minutes in 15 games last season?
Spelling smack is my favourite.

Of course - but that doesn't fit the anti-Pastner agenda of the OP.
What fits your agenda, If you gave every College in America the pic between Pastner and Self, paying JP 500,000 or Self 4Mil i dought JP would have 1 taker!
Did you see those good games Black had under Pastner? Did you see them? I mean weren't the anti-Pastner folks just praying that Black would tear it up at Kansas so they could gloat about that --- only to find that Black was still Black under Self? Dude shut the F up ---
Let me find out who you are, Then we will see who shuts up.
I got the winner.

RE: Black
Black played behind Joel Embid, the probable number one pick in the draft at Kansas had he not been injured. Judging by how he played in the ncaa tourney seems like Self did a pretty good job with him to me. Probably took an entire year to change some bad habits. Now he's with the one of the big post up players in NBA history in Kevin McHale. 10 points 11 rebounds 9 on offense. Haters gonna hate I guess.

Jesus. What an indictment on Josh's ability to develop and motivate players....especially big men.
What were his stats at KS?
No one ever questioned his abilities. His effort was the issue. And the silly fouls he was called for in CUSA are not typically called in the NBA. Doesn't hurt he is surrounded by elite perimeter talent on the Rockets. Good for Tarik. He is a Memphis graduate.

Look I'm down on JP like most of us but somehow blaming him for the lack of progress with TB is ridiculous. Self got essentially the same fouls & little production out of TB that JP did. As the season played out at KU, the less TB contributed just like here. Let's at least be objective........

That's not the case at all. TB was playing some of the best ball of his career in the post season for Kansas. Whether you think that's Self's doing or not, that's the truth.

Trusted him enough to be the best player on the court final game of the season. 19 and 10.
In the game BEFORE Embiid got injured; Bill Self cough...cough..."trusted" Black enough to play him for a grand total of 9 minutes. BEFORE Embiid got injured, Black was playing 11.3 minutes per game. That is how much Bill Self "trusted" Black.
Nice try though, junior.

And he played some games he couldn't stay on the court due to fouls & lack of production. He also had good games here too along with some awful games, same TB different location & coach......your point?
