UAB Dropping Football Program
UAB Dropping Football Link

UAB will become the first FBS program to discontinue its football team since the University of the Pacific in 1995. Also are firing Athletic Director Brian Mackin.

This breaks my heart. The pain of having a program you loved ripped from you is awful. All they can hope for is a change in leadership like we had. They will lose their affiliation with C-USA over this. I wonder where there could end up? MVC? OVC? ASUN?

Very sad. And an even dumber move after the program showed improvement and even qualified for a bowl game!

I think their most probable landing spot is the A-Sun. They really aren't in the MVC's footprint, and the OVC already has a full compliment of 12 teams (3 non-football). Adding a 13th team would really mess with their scheduling.

The A-Suck could add UAB and another D2 move-up (Francis Marion, Columbus State, etc.) and be back to 10 teams.

RE: UAB Dropping Football Program
Why's that board of trustees after them -- Alabama Tide not powerful enough for the board? No powerful UAB alums to put a halt to this. ASun? Now that's what would be called a huge fall for your athletic program. Wonder who will be taken from the Sun Belt to replace them? Should ETSU go into aggressive mode to join App State and Ga Southern in the Sun Belt now? Last NCAA numbers that I saw placed ETSU in the middle of the Sun Belt pack on annual athletic spending, and that was before the football fee and the return of football.

Man, I feel really bad for them if they get dropped to the A-Sun, didn't their basketball team finish first in C-USA back in 2011 or 2012? Any chance the CAA might take them? I realize they are pretty far from most schools but the CAA did have Georgia State for a while and they currently have C of C.

I am only guessing but I would say it is not a closed issue.

Perhaps they could go FCS in football and move to the SoCon along with Coastal for 12 members.

Funny. Nick Saban, when asked about the UAB situation, made some comments and finished by saying that the final decision was "above his pay grade". Who, in the Alabama higher education structure, is in a higher pay grade than Nick Saban?

I'd love to have them in the Socon

Welp. Now its official. :(

http://espn.go.com/college-football/stor...ll-program

I truly hate it for the UAB players and fans...but perhaps we could bolster our roster with some of their guys? Would be very ironic if the end of their program might help jump-start ours.

I want to hear Murray's (Bartow) thoughts on someone's (Paul Bryant Jr. and Alabama BOT) dismantling his father's legacy.

RE: UAB Dropping Football Program
Just an excerpt from an older article:

Simmering under the surface of this debate is the role of powerful trustees with Crimson Tide ties, including Paul Bryant Jr., the son of the legendary Alabama football coach. To UAB supporters, there is no doubt Bryant Jr. plans to finally kill UAB football before he leaves the board this year after a decades-old feud tied to Gene Bartow, the late founder of UAB athletics.

Bartow accused Bear Bryant of cheating in a letter to the NCAA in 1991.

"Gene Bartow, out of his mouth, told me on many, many occasions that the aim of the board of trustees was to kill UAB football in the last 8-10 years," said Jimmy Filler, UAB's biggest booster and the creator of the UAB Football Foundation. "They're going to get the recommendation from [UAB President Ray Watts], and they'll accept what he brings to them."

Alabama state Rep. Jack Williams, a longtime supporter of UAB, said the board has always been opposed to UAB football.

"It's been a thorn in their flesh since day one," Williams said. "I think they've done everything to kill it. I'll be honest: I think the program's success this year may be what leads to its demise if the board goes through with this because people are excited."

A message left for Bryant Jr., who rarely speaks publicly, was not returned. Finis St. John, who chairs the Alabama board's athletic committee, declined to comment about UAB.

Trying to duck and cover before the media gets ahold of this side of the story, and there's a 30 for 30 about it. Plus with these allagations against Alabama taking money from UAB, I wonder in any penalties will befall the athletics, specifically the football program. Maybe death penalty?

As of Dec 2, 2014 the program is gone. UAB pres said that the athletic budget would not be cut, just "reallocated". Does that sound familiar?

Murray was asked on the Sports Monster this morning and he alluded to a long time bias the Trustees (chaired by Paul Bryant Jr.) had against UAB athletics. He also commented that he was very unhappy with decision. His dad started the athletic department at UAB and he and Tammy are graduates.

This is what really gets me fired up about the NCAA. By sitting back and letting the few power conferences run the show, other programs are being destroyed in the interim. They are just standing by and watching it happen, praying it won't screw up the $$$ that is flowing in.

I think all the non-power conference schools should start their own association, torch the tournament in March, and see what happens to their $$$ then. They will listen to the rest of the world then instead of the small few.

They have used all the same rhetoric ETSU's administration used when the school dropped football. Their president even thinks they have a chance to stay in Conference USA (they don't).

This will be a disaster for UAB's profile as an institution, which is probably exactly what the Board of Trustees in Tuscaloosa wants. It's a shame any time college football loses a program, but it opens doors for other schools to make the moves UAB couldn't/wasn't allowed to make.

The NCAA is powerless. If the Power Five Conferences do not get their way, they will leave the NCAA and form their own organization. The Power Five are already getting more autonomy within the NCAA in order to run their own football show, starting with offering enhanced athletic scholarships. The other FBS conferences have little choice but to go along with this while knowing that few of them can afford to offer enhanced athletic scholarships. Since they're already the second tier, this will cement that distinction and futher expose the pretending. They could even be frozen out of money games down the road with the Power Five schools because of the new playoff system rules. And, the non-Power Five DI schools are wondering if these changes will impact the "March Madness" basketball tournament. That could end up being the main concern, including the FCS schools and the non-football DI schools.

RE: UAB Dropping Football Program
It is eerily similar, the way UAB is going about this compared to ETSU. President is giving all the same excuses, plus he is a medical school guy. Familiar cries from the non-football UAB fans as well. They think more money will be funneled into the basketball program and they can now make that next step and become a power school...of course failing to realize that they will be kicked out of their longtime league. I've even seen some of their fans say that even if they have to go to a lower league, they will be able to dominate it.

Yeah, this seems very familiar.
