It really sounds like these 4 kids were doing all the right things. Sometimes **** happens. I'm just glad nobody was seriously injured.

RE: NSR: AL.com's Smear Campaign against UAB
Smear campaign or not...the real issue here is the four kids who got robbed, three got banged up, and two guys were forced to rape the two girls. I know I am going to catch sh*t about saying it was rape. Any kind of sex that is done under pressure/treat is rape. I am not saying the two guys are guilty of anything, they are not, but this piece of crap that had the gun gets 4 charges of rape(case could be made the guys were too) along with theft, assault, and whatever else than can throw at him.

When I was at UAB in the mid to late 90s I had an attempted car-jacking by three idiots who robbed the best western and waffle house and carjacked someone else before finding me. I had some idiot pulled a knife on my over a parking spot at the old Blazer dorm (were the student fitness center is now). He quickly moved on after I showed him the Marine Corps K-Bar of mine was a hell of a lot bigger & sharper then his dull rusty butter cutter he had..... and I knew how to use it effectively! Point being, our beloved UAB is in the heart of a large city. Go to Memphis State. Use to live right off campus. Tell me you would be comfortable on the southside of that campus at night regardless of how much lighting there is.

I agree, and I'm not saying that these folks in particular were stupid... I'm just stating general principles of self-protection and situational awareness.

RE: NSR: AL.com's Smear Campaign against UAB
Someone shot and killed a guy in the parking deck at the Galleria several Christmases ago

Five people were killed in an apartment in Shelby County on 280 a few years ago

Last year a guy killed two people in a fairly well-to-do subdivision in Pelham

Things happen, life isn't and will never be 100% safe. UAB and the Southside area are safer today than they have been in years. I'm about to buy a house very close to campus, and have no qualms about it. Be smart, do what you can to prevent things like this as much as is reasonable, but also live your life and don't freak out.

You know what I Think might could cure 90% of the crime at UAB ?

It is very old school, but a couple of cops, walking a beat, would shake up the low lifes trying to hang around campus.

When some one walks up and sticks a gun in your face out of the blue that pistol in the holster isn't going to do any good, and they were parked in a well lit area. They were also in a group of four which in most cases deters those types of crimes. They ran up against a serious nut job with a gun and our lackey to be alive. You can do everything wright and still be a victim.

Hey I think I'll rob these four.
Hey, why not let the 2 guys get a hummer in the process?

Something just doesn't add up.

Could be indicative of someone with sexual predatory tendencies, I reckon. The danger there being the possibility of escalation if he's not caught. I'm sure the police have already questioned the males in then case pretty thoroughly with the nature of this attack - very unusual, no doubt about it.

Dr Watt's just issued a statement saying they creep has been identified and warrants issued including charges of sexual assault of all 4 students. This is the dude's third offense. The last was an armed robbery that some idiot judge issued a sentence of 3 years probation. That type of decision should be criminal itself. I have nothing but contempt for such a person in that position of power. Someone needs to track down that judge and have that incompetent fool removed.

As far as things not adding up, the police never release all the information regarding what happens in crimes like this so they can easily verify and witness tips as genuine. If a tip comes in that matches the release but not additional undisclosed details they can quickly focus only on any probable genuine tips. In this case there were two conflicting statements early on...one saying he forced the two females to preform... the other said that he forced the four students to preform...on each other. So we can't 100% be sure that the only act that occurred was the two guys getting hummers as it was crudely stated above. It may be semantics of the statements or it may have been a slip of additional information. I know the crimestoppers video didn't exactly match some other portions of the official statement, so don't make assumptions thinking you know the whole story, because I can assure you...you don't.

On the actual acts of stealing all their clothes and forcing the sexual acts, sometimes it's all about control with thugs like this. He made them do it because he could. And there is no way to make sense of what he made them do.

My heart aches for what they had to go through, I'm just thankful they didn't risk resisting and that for some reason he didn't push them further than he did. It could have been much much worse...he actually shot a car when they initially hesitated.

The MOST important thing to be thankful for is they did what they had to do to survive and all four of those kids are alive today.

Well stated. I hope they can recover some semblance of normalcy, but you are correct that the fact that they're still alive is the most important thing. Trauma can be treated (hopefully) but dead is kind of permanent.

I don't know the judge who granted probation or his/her motivation, but it may be that he/she was acting in accordance with (unofficial) guidelines set to keep from adding to the already almost 200% of capacity prison system. The "fault" in the guy's release may have been due to having no place to put him due to overcrowded prisons and with many of the county jails already serving as mental health detention centers.

What a disgusting implication. This borders on defamation of character. Blaming victims should be a crime and you should be ashamed of yourself.

Yeah that sentence doesn't seem that ridiculous to me. The one year sentence he got for robbery and kidnapping for his first offense seems more out of wack to me. Only a year for kidnapping?
