I heard that, but don't know if it's true, or not. All I know is we were about to hire McElwain, and switched to Fuente at the last minute. It definitely wasn't a committee decision, it was done outside that circle. I was told it was Raines, but yeah, it could have been Smith, too. Or both, if Smith got the info and told Raines to find somebody else.

Like I said, the details could be muddled, but the part I'm certain about is the decision was made outside the committee.

I don't know McElwain, but just looking and listening to CFJ and the swagger he carries, how could you NOT hire him?

I say he stays ten years.

RE: Bowen better get his list ready.
JF seems to be a good family man & with young children I think he'll be here awhile unless his dream job is offered, probably get the kids through school or at least to a transition like from elementary to middle school or HS. But the major immediate concern should be the top assistants. Memphis cannot pay JF P5 type money and also pay the assistants P5 type money - it just doesn't add up. Odom was in contention for the AR DC job last year & others will come come calling. JF has done a good job to keep his staff together & get them better pay but this is probably what we will see first.

If we were fortunate enough to get in the B12, JF might retire here. It's real long shot but I'd love to see it. Let's keep winning, GO Tigers!

I don't think we have to worry about Fuente going to another program after this season.

He isn't proven enough to pop up in coaching searches for the top tier programs (Florida, A&M if Sumlin bolts, Michigan, etc.) and most of the goodish ACC teams that may be looking for coaches this Spring can't really afford a bidding war with Memphis.

Sumlin isn't going anywhere. A&M is kicking Texas' @$$ in recruiting.

That NFL siren song is getting quite strong in College Station, if what I'm hearing is correct.

McElwain was a Sexton client

He has an incredible resume with stops as an assistant or coordinator at A&M, Purdue (with Drew Brees and a Rose Bowl) and then Oklahoma before getting his shot at Houston.

I was about to say, it looks like he's done pretty well at Colorado State, and we probably would be happy with him here if we had hired him.

He won't do it again. That was his first step, a stepping stone. He'll get something bigger. Let's hope for the best and he is here a while. Wonder what he is on the hook for with the UoM if he bails. Enought to pay off Tommy West I hope or is that done.

Tommy is paid off, as I bet is Porter. I doubt Fuente's buyout is too steep (read: the buyout HE pays if he leaves), as Memphis wasn't really in the position to demand a huge buyout when he was hired.

I don't think money will be an issue now either....at least compared to the lower to mid-level P5 schools.

Agreed. If an SEC school comes knocking (if Miss. State loses Mullen to Florida in the off season, let's say), he may listen to a mid-tier school. However, ACC schools like VTech, Miami, etc. or Big 12 schools like TTech or TCU (maybe) probably wouldn't win a bidding war with Memphis.

RE: Bowen better get his list ready.
There is a much better chance that Fuente goes to a program that lost it's head coach to a better gig. I don't think he'd leave for a dumpster fire Power 5 program like Kansas. I think he would definitely listen to a MSU program coming off a 10 win season if Mullen goes to Michigan or Florida. Or Michigan picks Miles, which opens LSU up to Mullen or some other proven P5 coach. Sumlin could bolt for the NFL, which I think he wants to do. That is another domino.

Another interesting plot would be Gary Patterson moving on to a LSU or A&M type job and Fuente going back to TCU.

I don't think he goes to a crap program like Kansas or an elite program like LSU or Michigan. I think we have to worry about these successful mid-level programs that will lose coaches to elite programs.

RE: Bowen better get his list ready.
There is something to be said for a school that gives the opportunity to be a first time head coach. There is a reason many coaches stay at their schools for long long periods of time. Money is a factor, but not always the final factor. CJF is not a self promoting, self centered, narcissistic type that we have had experience with in the past (in another sport.)

Keep improving and upgrading the football program, treat him right, pay him well (commensurate with his ability and market) and the U of M will have done all that can be done.

I think he is happy with things so far and he will not consider leaving, but will use any offer from another school to improve his contract. Any coach would do the same. Things are different at the U of M now with a new administration and direction.
