That is cool and will further lay down long term roots for UCF. Usf is likely doing the same with our new downtown Tampa medical school to replace our current on campus home. This will be a huge win:win for USf and Tampa.
21st Century 24/7 Universities are the future.

Absolutely. The more intertwined a city becomes with its university the better.

Some of the comments on that link are funny. "We need more parking!"
A lot of Florida/southern born Knights don't know downtown as anything more than where they stumble around from 11pm-2am.
Can't wait for UCF downtown to take shape. What a win win.

I was reading a recent obj article. It seems that a big problem for our downtown area and attracting more employers is commercial space. A lot of that is because of the perrimore area. The other thing is I bet this helps with getting state funding for development. They need more investment in downtown. I have to say downtown tampa does a good job with the layout of its urban area. It's design and layout is nice. The water running next to it helps.

I admit I'm not familiar with Tampa, but I'm curious about how it wouod work with building a new hospital and med school in a downtown. I suppose I am just used to seeing hospitals build on suburban land with sprawling campuses that have plenty of space to expand. On the other hand, I used to live in Indianapolis, where ther was a huge hospital with Indiana U's med school (run out of the IUPUI campus), and that worked well.
I'm interested in learning more. Universities and hospitals need lots of space, and downtowns don't have a ton, with the space they do have being really expensive, but it is great to have the city and schools tied more closely together.

USF has always used Tampa General as their "teaching hospital", which is located downtown on Davis Island.
Tampa General is a Level 1 Trauma Center, which is a great place for medical students/residents to train.

There is plenty of commercial space its just not large contiguous space. CNL 3 is about to get started. There is plenty of room for high rise(no airport limitations) commercial buildings west of I4.

How does state funding allocation work for the Florida schools? It seems that UCF and USF have a much stronger backing from the state than what ECU gets through the NC system. Half the NC budget is reserved for UNC, NCSU and ECU get the next biggest chunks but the pale in comparison to UNC's and the remaining schools get scraps. UNC by and large views projects of any significant measure at other schools (not NCSU) as competition and at the expense of UNC.

The legislature has shifted a bit more in our favor for a couple of reasons, but probably the major reason is because Orlando is a growing metropolitan. The other reason is UCF is getting more alumni in public office.

Hasnt been decided yet. But there is a big push from the Mayor as well as the owner of the Rays that owns a lot of the land downtown to move the Medical school there. I believe they already have a presence in the area. There was an article somewhere that went into details on the big money people that are pushing it. Ill try to find it.

There's a big push (Tampa Mayor, Owner of the Lightning/downtown developer) are all pushing for USF Medical/Health to move downtown next to/near Tampa General.

USF has funds to build a new 6 story building...and they are deciding if School of Medicine is to move downtown...then thats where this new building will be located.
It would certainly be a major time saver for most Physicians, students, residents, etc...who currently have to go back-and-forth from Downtown & Campus on a frequent basis.

I'm not sure what you read but that doesn't make any sense. We have commercial vacancies and as someone else noted CNL and Highwoods for that matter are ready to build when the market is. I also don't know what Parramore would have to do with anything regarding commercial property from a variety of angles.
I don't know enough about Tampa to speak intelligently about it but from my times visiting its been completely void of street life in the Central Business District. Makes Orlando's CBD look like Chicago, relatively speaking. I know that Hyde Park is lively, reminds me of Thornton Park.
I'm with you on the water. Orlando is the only major city in Florida not on a major body it seems and that holds true when you think of most big cities in the country (which makes perfect sense historically). Lake Eola is a nice postcard but nothing like being on the Bay. Even downtown Kissimmees lakefront is the real deal.
Keep an eye on the I4 ultimate project that is starting in March. It's a 6 year overhaul. Employers located downtown at least have options thanks to SunRail. Mainland Center and Heathrow are pretty car centric. I don't think anyone would sniff at it if it was a 1 year project but 6 years, on top of all of the other stuff happening downtown, may cause some relocations. Especially if SunRail runs longer hours and weekends sooner than later.

Hyde Park Village in Tampa is still struggling to come back...even with some new tenants this fall.
15 years ago...it was a busy "small" Park Ave...but the last 10 years have been rough...which is a shame..as they offer up free parking...best theater around (CineBistro) and some cool shops/restaurants.
Think some tenants and lots of shoppers now head over to the International Mall/Plaza.

Commercially yes but residentially no. Hard to find affordable places to live around that area
