GS vs. USA Football Discussion
Just in case anyone wants to take a break from bragging or accusing others of bragging, or running down other people's attendance, or seeing who can find/produce the best gif.

I'd actually like to know a little bit more about the Jaguars, because we are only a day away and I feel like I don't know much. I'll provide a snapshot of GS season so far, in case you haven't gleaned enough from the thousands of other threads, and I'm hoping maybe some USA fans can do the same.

Georgia Southern 1-2

We are a running heavy team, but have been efficient and effective throwing the ball so far this season. We average over 500 yds a game, and some will say that is inflated because of the Savannah State win, but we were over 400 against NCSU and over 500 as well for GA TECH. We have 2 quarterbacks who are fast and athletic, you will likely see both in the game. We utilize 2 running backs who are explosive and tough runners. Our OL is very tough and experienced, I believe all seniors. Our #1 TE is now out for the year and he was a huge asset blocking as well as catching a pass or two here and there. Our receivers have good hands and run good routes, as well as being capable blockers to assist the running game.

On D, we have traditionally been pretty tough against the run, but susceptible to giving up big plays through the air. We have a strong, tough, DL but are not deep at that position, generating a great pass rush has been a problem the last several years and this year so far as well. Our LB corp is stout and has some ball hawks who make tackles all over the place. The defensive backfield has some decent experience and depth, but needs to continue to improve its pass coverage and create some turnovers.

Kicking game, we have a ton of touchbacks, and are I think 4-4 on FG, with 1 missed XP this year. Punting is probably slightly above average.
Return game, nothing doing so far this year.

I'll hang up and listen

RE: GS vs. USA Football Discussion
My take on the matchup...I think we should be able to move the ball and get points.

USA needs to air it out right from the beginning because I don't think they'll have a lot of luck running the ball against us. Our pass defense seems better somewhat but it's still a weakness.

The key matchup is the South OL versus our DL...if Bridge has all day to throw the ball then they can outscore us. I suspect at least 60 points total in this game.

RE: GS vs. USA Football Discussion
Here's a brief thumbnail of USA.
On offense, Brandon Bridge is as physically talented a QB as any you'll see, but he's short on experience and we have yet to see him put it together for a complete game. The offensive line for USA should be better than the one seen in the first two games with the return of all-SBC OT Ucambre Williams. It's an experienced talented group that can pass protect very well and can open holes for running back Jay Jones and others as well. the receiving corp has a ton of accolades but dropped a season's worth of passes last week. Safe to assume they'll be better this week. TE Wes Saxton is all-SBC and considered a solid NFL prospect.

The defense lost some long time contributors in the front seven but has performed much better than expected so far. JC transfer DE Jimmie Gipson is extremely quick and the other end, Theo Rich, is looking really good , too. Linebacker Maleki Harris is a star and the entire secondary returns from last season.

If Bridge has a good game and his receivers don't let him down, I see USA being able to pull out a relatively high-scoring affair. This one should be played in the 30s.

I'm not looking forward to tomorrow. USA has been a big disappointment so far. Much of that rides on our offenses shoulders. Dropped passes, poor QB decision making, etc.

Meanwhile, Ga Southern appears to be wanting it more.

If we lose, lets just ditch Bridge and go with the backup.

From what I've seen, he's got a helluva arm and I think the problem may lie on the other end of those passes. At some point in time, they surely will start catching some of those... Right?

I believe Ga Southern has the edge on us. However, if the offense gels and can move the ball down the field, it will allow our defense to rest and adust to GS offense. From the get go it will be about execution.

I disagree with Tom. The backup would have less experience but get's a shot at Idaho. That does not make sense. Let's see how Bridge plays. He is just one player on the field. You can't automatically assume he is the problem for the teams lack of success against Ga Southern.

RE: GS vs. USA Football Discussion
I see this game as being fairly high scoring. I am not sold on our defense's ability to stop the pass. Of course Ga. Tech doesn't pass very much and Savannah St. can't do much of anything on offense. So our pass defense has not been tested that much other than N.C. State. In the 2nd half of the N.C. State game we struggled to stop their short passing game.

I believe we will score some points. I just don't know if it will be enough. I look for something like a 35-28 score that could go either way.

I have a fear that we come out flat and fall behind early, while we demonstrated the ability to come back, it would be hard to slow USA down enough to catch them. So if GSU scores early, we win if we fall behind by two scores, we probably won't catch up. I agree with the high scoring shootout. 42-34 GSU.

from what I saw of the Miss St-South Alabama game, the problem lays more in the WRs not holding on to the ball when Bridge puts it on the $.......which if hey are able to do that against us, scares me too death.

I agree, in the first half alone, we had 5 key drops. The sad thing, our DB's had 3 key drops, jumped the routes, the ball hit them between the numbers and they dropped an easy INT each time. Must have been something in the water, or for other Jag fans, the water must have been too warm or they ran out of water.

RE: GS vs. USA Football Discussion
watched the first half of the Miss St/USA game, USA out played them up to the last 3-4 minutes of the half, the receiver dropping the td in the first quater was killer. Your secondary looked great, your right, they should have had 2 or 3 picks, but they played aggressive, and they really were hitting the receivers, I saw atleast 2 plays where the hit separated the ball from the receiver. GS has never been a good passing team, and they are about to face, from what I have seen, the best secondary they have faced so far. GS will get their yds on the ground, but sooner or later they are going to be forced to throw the ball, and that's where USA has a big advantage. Game is simple, if GS can dominate the ground game, and get a lot of third and shorts, GS 34 USA 24, is USA can consistently get GS in third and long situtions, USA 31 GSU 21

RE: GS vs. USA Football Discussion
So, GS is a 'spread option' attack?
How do we characterize USA's offense?

Looking at QB play, GS throws only occasionally ( lest than 15 times a game ).
Consequently, they've reduced picks ( zero ) and sacks ( 2 )
USA has two picks and been sacked eight times.
That could be strongly related to the nature of the games each were in.

GS seems to be able to run well in the spread ( and if you can run, why would you pass? ),
with Matt Breida leading the conference in rushing.
Jones and Houston appear to have good ( around 4 yds/carry ) but not gawdy numbers for USA.

On Defense, USA may be the fastest team GS has faced.
But defensive speed can be burned, if the defenders over-run the plays.

Interesting game, but I'll have to read about it Sunday.

Y'all have fun, now, Y'hear?

Drops flat out killed us last week. We wouldn't have won anyway, but leaving 10 points on the field in the first half of the first quarter is like hanging a big "beat me" sign around your neck, especially playing a team like MSU. As far as comparing what both teams have done so far this year, two games doesn't really give you much to work with. USA is still an unknown as is Brandon Bridge. I thought he played well last week though considering that he wasn't getting any help from the running game or his receivers.
