Fall Camp
The first scrimmage was this morning. As far as I know, zero media coverage as of yet.

We do have this video from the SID's office:

What we know so far:

-Derek Brown is absent. Not looking good on his return. Defensive line (outside of Covington) remains unsettled at this point.

-James Mayden is getting a lot of PT and performing well. Along with Temi Alaka we've got a nice couple of long and speedy freshman receivers to boost the receiving corps for this season.

-Mario Hull is playing his best football.

-Running back corps looking strong (as expected).

-Driphus is in control and playing pretty well. Battle ongoing between German and Stehling for the backup job.

-Canadian redshirt frosh Godber is in the poll position to replace Carroll/Reue at RG.

What we don't:

-Players need to step up in the secondary behind the front line guys

-Defensive line starters and depth still needs to be worked out

-Who's the #3 corner behind Hill and Callahan?

-What's the pecking order at RB? (Dillard, Davis, Hamilton and Turner all getting fairly balanced carries)

So, in sum, despite greater continuity and # of returning starters on the defense, at this point it appears to be the less settled side of the ball with the most questions to answer/holes to fill before Notre Dame.

Talon you should take over at Rivals. Still nothing there on scrimmage. That poor guy always seems to have a problem and coverage is very inconsistent

RE: Fall Camp
Thanks for the report/summary Talon. I like what I hear about Hull and the WR's in general. We have enough weapons for Driphus to not have to force things. Taylor, Parks, Hull could be as good a top 3 at WR as we've ever had. Emerging future stars and a solid TE group round out a very good set of targets for any QB. With Driphus' ability to keep plays alive, there will be chances for big pass plays. Stehling also looked good on the clip.

I'm more concerned at RB. Against P5 teams over his career, Charles Ross was pretty good (very surprised he didn't get a look by NFL). Looking forward to the Notre Dame game, which is obviously a huge game, I wonder how much we'll miss Ross' physicality.

Does anyone know if any of the freshman RB's got touches?

Excited to hear Bailiff single out Emanuel Ellerbee (6'0, 225lb, true freshman LB). Early candidate to not redshirt.

DE and CB are the two biggest concerns. I'm obviously not concerned with Callahan, he's an interception waiting to happen. And Hill can get the job done in coverage. But after that I'm not so sure. This is what Notre Dame will probably go after. I like what our safeties bring to the table when Hill is one of them, but when he's at CB, we run out of pass coverage depth.

Pass rush will be crucial to the defense. We know Covington will cause disruption and see double teams, so who else can get a handful of sacks? We need at least 1 or 2 of those players to step up. Big unknown with or without Brown available.

Sounds like there's a lot to be worked on overall, but more obvious holes on defense.

Could not agree more. I think he spends more time at UofH. Must, his reports are clueless. Saw where he had Canady and Mouchantaff starting, one left campus and one is hurt. Had Billups challenging for #2 QB because he threw one TD pass at spring scrimmage. I could go on. Will not renew that's for sure.

This is the report I got and it wasn't from the Rivals guy:
QB - DJ looks decent, still inconsistent at practices but looked better at scrimmage. German is at #2 after a good Spring, could see playing time. Tyler has struggled but looked better at scrimmage. Freshman QB is tall, could be a WR in the long run.
RB- Davis looks good but not as explosive as last year. Dillard is solid, Turner looks faster. Impressive young RB's - Stewart and Walter #27. Can see both dressing and contributing this year.
WR- Hull has looked the best; Taylor not getting too many reps. Young receivers are inconsistent so don't get excited about one highlight on the film, missing the drops.
TE- Cella is the man. Hunt and Wells going after #2.
Defense looks better than offense. No surprise there. Brown is missing in action and we need him. Cornerback play is concerning, no depth.
Ellerbee is by far the most impressive freshman. Real deal. Should dress this year and could be on the field soon. Bright future.
O-Line -needs to adapt to faster pace but boys look big.
this is after one week.
K- LSU transfer kid did not practice but has experience.

Why?

Coaches know what he can do. Want to give reps to the less proven players, see what they can do.

Also, reduce risk of injuring a key player. Covington also sees light reps mostly.

I agree it has been disappointing of late, but he did get around to posting an article that includes some interesting notes and extended comments from Bailiff (compared to those in the video):

RE: Fall Camp
Good read from fall camp. I like the update(s) on the DL in particular since that is an area of concern for all Owl fans.

Camp Notes: 8/11
Jefferson D. Powell

It's been a week since the Owls started fall camp and the Owls hit the field twice on Saturday, once for an early morning scrimmage and then an abbreviated practice that was cut short due to lightning. Owls Insider brings you an update from the Owls Fall camp.

Monday's scrimmage featured quite a few big plays from some young Owls including a couple of long TD's from receivers Zach Wright and true freshman James Mayden. Bailiff made it a point to get some of the younger guys plenty of work and came away quite pleased with the scrimmage from this morning.

"I was really pleased with the defensive play start to finish," head coach David Baliff said on the Owls scrimmage this morning. "I would like to see us get more turnovers over there, we only had one today but I really like the way they're playing the ball. They ran to the ball really well and I thought we were pretty gap sound for this early in the defense."

Jackson continues to show great leadership at the quarterback position.
"Offensively, Driphus [Jackson] has a lot of confidence, in what he is doing" he added. "Some of the young receivers like James Mayden and Parker Smith are really starting to pick the offense up. I can't say enough, our receivers are looking really good. Talking about the offensive line I'm really amazed at the kind of player Andrew Reue is, he ended up playing four different positions for us. Our running game looked great, I really like our running backs; I think they each offer something different. I was very pleased with our effort today being our first scrimmage. The only thing I didn't like was there too many holding calls on the outside."

With the Owls being a week into fall camp, Bailiff is happy with the effort he's seen and believes the Owls are right where they should be this far into camp which he credits to the play of his quarterback.

"I'm really pleased with where we are," Bailiff said. "I think a lot of it has to do with Driphus, he's very confident in this offense and has just offered spectacular leadership. I thought he's maintained a good flow with the offense, he's been aggressive every practice. We've got a great competition going with the number two spot between Nate German and Tyler Stehling, their really battling it out. I like the competition we're getting at all the positions really."

The battle at defensive end continues to wage on, Derek Brown has yet to report to camp as he's missing time due to personal reasons, but Bailiff says he's expected back and hopefully sooner, rather than later. Zach Patt and Brian Nordstrom have been getting a lot of first team reps thus far in camp.

"I tell you what, those young defensive ends, Graysen Schantz, Brian Womac, the Grant Peterson move has paid dividends for us, we moved him in the spring but you can see he's getting the reps now that he needs," Bailiff said. " [Brian] Nordstrom has picked up right where he left off, I think we're going to have some nice young talent to play defensive end."

Junior defensive tackle Christian Covington has emerged as a real force on the Owls defense the last few seasons and could be poised for a dominant season in 2014, there are some question marks behind him due to the loss of expected starter Stuart Mouchantaf, but Bailiff has been pleased with the development of some of his young defensive tackles.

"In the middle, Christian Covington has been amazing at times, "Bailiff added. "We limited his role some today because we had 21 other guys that needed to get better. He's just been dominating the first part of camp." I'm really proud of [Cody] Henessee battling in the middle there with Ross Winship. We were counting heavily on the return of Stuart Mouchantaf, so that really hurt us losing him. Some of the young guys like Preston Gordon, we weren't counting on some of those young guys and now we're having to, but I like the way they're developing."

James Radcliffe and Alex Lyons have continued to work with the first team defense and it looks like Lyons may have solidified his starting position at linebacker. Redshirt freshman Nick Uretsky has been getting a lot of reps and D.J. Green has had a nice camp as well and looked really well in the scrimmage this morning.

The defensive backfield received a bit of a shakeup again, Malcolm Hill who was moved to cornerback this spring returns to his natural safety position. Bailiff indicated that the move wasn't due to Hill, but more in part to the fact they wanted to get J.T. Blasingame and Michael Warren onto the field more. Blasingame may be the man to beat at this stage opposite of Bryce Callahan with the move of Hill back to safety while Ryan Pollard looks to have the No.2 spot behind Callahan locked down.

Owlatheart - my understanding is that it is very important for recruiting to have a Rivals site; apparently that's where the high school kids go when they follow a team. Our problem is subscriptions - we ain't got many. Therefore frankly it's hard for Rivals to justify the time, effort and cost of putting up a site for us. You can look at say the Aggie/Longhorn/Tech/TCU site, and the subscriber participation traffic is off the charts. We are mimimal at best, I'd guess the lowest participation in D1. We therefore IMO are stuck with what we have, and even tho it's not up to par, we should bite the bullet and support it as best we can.

Precisely why I maintain my subscription. I realize we have a much smaller fan base to work from.

Wouldn't mind (if there aren't major behavioral issues), but we definitely fit the profile he is looking for.

It's a natural fit for a former Northwestern player from Houston.

Yes we did recruit Venric.

No I don't think we were that close to getting his committment.

Yes.

He would be an instant home run threat on offense and special teams. He's been Northwestern's most explosive player for the past couple of seasons, when healthy. He was offered by both Rice and Houston out of high school. I'm hoping that by finishing his Northwestern degree, he will be able to do what Nwosu did, enroll in graduate school and play without sitting out a year. If that's his plan, I like our chances.
