Sun Belt road trip
Hi gang,
I'm a new Vandal to the board. I'm really looking forward to the start of the season and being in a conference again. My wife and I are considering taking in a road game this season. We were considering the Florida game, but that might be a bit to soon. The UI plays road conference games this season against ULM, TXST, GeSO and Appy St. I'm curious as to which one you people that have been to these schools would recommend. I am leaning towards Georgia Southern in October, but nothing is decided yet. Of those four schools, what are you all's opinon? I'm thinking of anything from things to do around the region, how their fans treat visiting guest, best traditions. Anything of interest. Thanks.

It would be easy for me, Georgia Southern for the proximity to Charleston and Savannah; or Texas State for the Alamo and river walk. No offense to ULM, but there's not much to see in Monroe, La and someone from Idaho probably wouldn't be impressed with the Appalachians.

Depends what you prefer:

If you want to spend some time in the Fall up in the Mountains...go to App.

If you want to see Savannah, Charleston, and visit some of the historic towns of the Civil War...go to Georgia Southern

If you are an avid hunter, and have always wanted to visit Duck Commander, or just simply see a different part of the country...go to ULM

If you want to tour San Antonio, see the Riverwalk, and get to experience a beautiful campus in San Marcos....go to Texas State

Texas State. Gorgeous campus, close to San Antonio and Austin, and San Marcus is a really nice place as well.

If you are looking to make the trip to Southern, w/ the game scheduled on October 11th & being played at 6pm, you could almost plan to wear shorts or worst case jeans.......Statesboro is still very warm in early to mid-October. Statesboro, is a small college town, but is growing up around the university. Your best bet, is to stay in Savannah, its a hour drive or less b/w the 2, or in Augusta, which is only a hour & half away. Staying in Savannah you got come beaches on Tybee Island & just farther north on Hilton Head Island, SC........just things to think about.

Aside from Southern, I have only been to App... And it's great! Beautiful place and all the fans were cordial to me and I'm a GS man. I'm sure Idaho folks will be well taken care of.

Same for Southern, I'm sure you will be welcomed to many tailgates. Huge, beautiful campus and I love Savannah. Charleston is a great town, but it's a bit of a hike from Statesboro.

That's great...but why would he want to travel to Lafayette when Idaho doesn't play the Cajuns in either of the next two years?

Oh yeah! If you choose the Georgia Southern game then Charleston is a MUST. Savannah is nice enough I guess, but Charleston rules. in southern GA, you should try to visit Andersonville.

If it were me I'd go to TxSt easier to get into city, Austin and San Antonio are both easy drives. Nice campus I've been to ULM and GaSo, TxSt head over heals have not been to Appy can't comment.

You know that's not half bad, really... It's an easy day/day and half leisurely drive... get to check out some interesting places along the way.

Once people visit App in late Sept through October you'll start circling that trip every other year. Rent a cabin with a view when you come.

Probably because its one of the top tourist destinations in the south with food and festivals year around. And because he has good taste! Any other questions?05-mafia

If we're talking Southern, how are we including Charleston? It's 2 and a half hours from Statesboro. One of my favorite cities in the world though.

150 miles is an easy drive. It's about the same as Mobile to New Orleans and I've gone over there to spend the day. It's either there or Savannah, which is 50 (and not a bad choice either).

He wasn't asking for a vacation destination, he wanted to know which road game he should attend this year...
