RE: The movie thread
I just watched both Thor movies. I'd seen the first one before and never saw the 2nd one.

I can't get into them like I do Captain America or the Iron Man movies.

I liked Dark World more than the first one. It just seemed to flow better and had less crappy "on Earth" scenes. I would say that Captain America and Iron Man were better overall movies though. Well sans Iron Man 3.

RE: The movie thread
Planet of the Apes(1968) / BR
--Original and quite interesting IMO. The ending was a real shocker although I had seen a hint of it at the end of Spaceballs.

PotA 2 / BR
--Decent sequel but the humans in the forbidden zone and subsequent nuclear bomb left over for "ages past" without actually answering why those humans could talk and were there was a major skip to me.

PotA 3 / BR
--Time Travel aspect so to speak along with Caesar being born to the two intelligent apes was a cool idea. Only thing that bothered me about it was the "main villain's" rationale about wanting to kill them all seemed contradictory to his own assertion about different futures.

PotA 4 / BR
--Caesar's beginnings as future ruler of the Apes was an interesting tale but somehow the future "atmosphere" at his ascension seemed a little to B-movie.

PotA 5 / BR
--Caesar's rule and confrontation with the humans in his version of Earth was interesting but again, some of it felt very B movie in quality.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes / theater
--Good movie. I really liked how Caesar and Koba related to each other. The only flaw I see in this movie versus the old one was that the humans in this version, especially the ones bent on military action against the apes, just seemed to filler in acting roles.

Planet of the Apes (2001) / BR
--Not quite a remake of the original movie but I did favor its Ape characters more. Interesting they went with all the humans could speak unlike the ones from the original series. Interesting they set up Wahlberg as a love interest for a female ape and a human. Its own twist at the end was pretty insane.

RE: The movie thread
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey- Netflix DVD-- Like most of the LOTR movies, it starts out slow and tries to stay true to the book. However, they put a little too much into it about the Orcs and the "Brown Wizard". (I don't recall him from the books). Not a bad movie, however like LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring, the last 30 minutes is where I feel it really picks up then it's a cliffhanger.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug- Netflix DVD- To me it moved faster than the first one, however, I think they are focusing too much on the Ring and forecasting for LOTR. I've heard that some of the information being shown in The Hobbit movies come from other books by Tolkien with the same characters. Never really lost a pace, but seemed to focus again on more things than the actual book. I do like the appearance of Legolas and foreshadowing of Gimli. I was upset there wasn't more when the credits rolled. I like it a tab bit more than the first one, but if that's an indicator, I'll love the last one. To me Return of the King was the best out of LOTR.

Knockout- Netflix Streaming- A low budget movie starring Stone Cold Steve Austin as a janitor that used to be a boxer training a bullied kid how to box. It's a story as old as the 80s but told differently. Not a bad movie to watch on an afternoon if you're bored.

The Usual Suspects- Netflix Streaming- I never saw this movie before streaming it. Loved it. The cast of characters and the people who played them, along with the story was awesome. I wish I had seen this before seeing "Basic" in college. Basically the same movie, but Usual Suspects is better. Can't beat Kevin Spacey playing any roll.. Although Kevin Pollack had the best line of the movie.. "You know what happens if you go back to jail?" "I f*ck your father in the shower then have a snack? You gonna charge me?"

RE: The movie thread
Has anybody seen "Once Upon a Time in the West"? The Sergio Leone movie? Obviously an old movie, with much younger Bronson and Henry Fonda in it. I like the movie, but I'm not sure why, as it's kind of slow, for me anyway. I guess I like the musical score, and am kind of a Bronson fan. It was also interesting seeing Henry Fonda playing a bad guy.

As for the hobbit movies, I was a little annoyed actually with the most recent one. Partly it's the usual dumbing down of things and loss of nuance compared to the book. Also, they spent too much time miraculously escaping the dragon time and again. The dragon would seem more mysterious and powerful if they didn't reduce it to the equivalent of a dumb, giant orc. Just my two cents.

300- Personal DVD- I forget from time to time just how great this movie was as far as action and all.

300: Rise of an Empire- Netflix DVD- I don't think it compares to the original. The gory scenes looked too fake and it seemed more vulgar than the original. But it was cool considering it wasn't actually a sequel but more of a concurrent movie.

Grudge Match- Netflix DVD- Overall a good movie. Couple of goofy parts, but the story line was good and I got a few laughs from it.

RE: The movie thread
Hercules / theater
--not bad, but I kind of think the way they spun the tale tamed some of my interest in it. I did like the set up though with his traveling partners. I thought The Rock did a good job at looking the part.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles / dvd
--Loved the 80s cartoon show, the first live action movie wasn't too bad.

TMNT 2: The Secret of the Ooze / dvd
--decent follow up and some cool origin story stuff. Not sure how I felt about the two mutant fighters Shredder brought to life considering they weren't Rock Steady or Bee Bop.

TMNT 3 / dvd
--I liked the time travel deal they had going on and IMO, it was the best overall movie out of the original 3.

TMNT / dvd
--I really dug the CGI anime feel to the whole movie. Cool story too.

Homefront / NF Stream
--Jason Statham and James Franco go at it in a Louisiana meth lab throwdown. I thought the trailers for it made it look interesting but never got a chance to see it till now. I liked the set up and the characters in it.

LotR: The Two Towers EE / BR
--Solid 2nd movie in the trilogy

The Man with the Iron Fists/ BR
--Great martial arts movie FWIW. I'd like to see Rza follow it up with a sequel.

I watched "The Warrior's Way" the other day. It's a martial arts movie set in the old west, and was pretty entertaining.

Just got back from seeing Guardians of the Galaxy. It was freakin amazing! Definitely a top 3 Marvel movie, right up there with Cap 2 and Avengers. Possibly better than Avengers...

Guardians of the Galaxy was great; it was an unknown quantity that ended up being much better than I could've ever imagined. The thing I enjoyed the most was that it was just flat-out funny! There were scenes in the movie that had me cracking up.

RE: The movie thread
I watched a plethora of movies..

"Bad Words"-- Netflix DVD-- Don't look for some shocking twist plot. It's just Jason Bateman acting immature, but it's funny.

"The To Do List"-- Netflix DVD-- Reminiscent of 80s movies where virgins are trying to get laid. It has it's moments but more of a chick flick than anything.

"Sex Tape"-- Theaters-- Wasn't bad, wasn't great either. Good dirty humor.. Get to see a lot of skin from Cameron Diaz, but you also see a ton of skin from Jason Segal (Not as much as "Forgetting Sarah Marshall"). Rob Lowe has the best scenes at his house though.

"This is 40"-- HBO/DVR-- Second time watching it. Watches like a documentary more than anything. Get to see Leslie Mann's can.. But that's nothing to write home about.

"The 5 Year Engagement"-- HBO/DVR-- I've watched this a few times. I find it humorous especially since when it came out I just got engaged and it seemed it'd be forever before we got married.

RE: The movie thread
Guardians of the Galaxy/theater
--not bad but not a must buy from my end. I can't get the hype behind it.

Lucy / theater
--The trailers led me to believe there was more to this about her mental powers so to speak than what actually transpired. The odd thing to me is why would the drug be of value to a Taiwanese cartel? How did it almost OD the guy in the office yet she grew in mental power? How did she know to look up Morgan Freeman's character? The action was pretty cool and the end game of cells and evolution was kind of cool.

Sin City/dvd
--Watched the theatrical cut. Just a cool movie with a cool style.

The Expendables / BR
--What a great all-star action movie.

The A Team S4 / Net Flix
--So it was S4 when the got to trial for their crime. The frequency of key witnesses confessing in private to back up the A Team only puss out at trial got annoying. The Black Ops guy having his hand what was developing was kind of suspect considering if they were freed outright they could go back into the Army as black ops. IMO, the way they handled this at the end was kind of suspect.

RE: The movie thread
The Expendables 3 / theater
--Again, decent casting and they manage to do a good job with giving everyone enough screen time. Without giving away spoilers that aren't already shown in the trailers... Old Crew is on a mission to rescue a OLDER MEMBER, once the mission is accomplished Harrison Ford's character takes on Church's role and sends them on their next mission of which they run into Mel Gibson's character who is a OLDER MEMBER and presumed dead. Ford and Stallone agree that that can't happen. Stallone believes to accomplish this he needs a younger team and he goes recruiting. Gibson takes hostage the new guys so its up to the old guard to come in and save the day. Schwarzenegger and Li return in the same roles. My only real beef with the movie was the Stallone/Gibson fight wasn't long enough, the way the crews got put together, and how the Gibson/Stallone feud got started--i.e. how the explanation got done. Snipes was great as Dr. Death.... he was in full Blade Bad Ass mode. The new crew was cool in how some of their abilities differ from the existing members.

RE: The movie thread
Spiderman 2 / BR
--Sad to say, in trying to watch it this week I have been so tired that I haven't made it all the way through. That said, as to the movie....again it opens up another batch of questions that beg for answers even though they do try to answer a few cliff hangers given out in the first one. I still like the casting, the humor, and so far the acting in the series. What I dislike about this series as a whole though is neither of the first two movies feels complete.... it is almost like we aren't tell you its a trilogy or whatever but we are stretching this out to make all the money we can.

Good Morning Vietnam/ dvd
--A Robin Williams classic IMO. Kind of political on the VC vs the Americans and who commits what kind of crimes.

Aladdin SE/ dvd
--While the animation was stellar, Robin Williams as the Genie of the Lamp really sold this movie.

Insomnia / dvd
--I loved this crime thriller ever since it came out. This plus Momento kind of sold me on Christopher Nolan as a director. Al Pacino and Robin Williams really work well together considering their pairing via the story of the movie.

Dead Poets Society / dvd
--I kind of liked Robin Williams take on a new teacher that goes against the grain almost against the school's wishes even if he was an alum but the real hook of the movie is the pressures those kids were under being sent to that school. And of course that one character's issues with his dad.

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For / theater
--as visually striking as the first. as cool as the first. Brolin for _____ for McCarthy was interesting... ____ for ____ for the guy with the golden eye was interesting. Sucks ___ couldn't do Miho (sp?) again but the new girl was pretty cool. Eva Green COGSCOGSCOGSCOGS DAMN GIRL! She is a super bad ass in the movie. Rourke was great as his character again and the guy doing the villain or Rourke was nastier than the first movie. Joseph Gordon Levit I guess is playing Rourke's illegitimate son but he plays a mean hand of poker!
