Mr Sawyer took two flights to get to Nigeria from Liberia, where he had attended his sister's funeral. The first took him from Monrovia to Lome in Togo, where he boarded a plane to Lagos. He collapsed at the airport on landing.

Manifests of the passengers and crew who travelled on the same flights as Mr Sawyer have yet to be released


Fellow passengers on his plane were given warnings about the disease’s symptoms, which can include bleeding from the nose and mouth, but were allowed to continue on their journeys.

Two very scary things in this story

1) Fellow passengers on his plane but were allowed to continue on their journeys.

2) Manifests of the passengers and crew who travelled on the same flights as Mr Sawyer have yet to be released.



So we don't know who was on the plane with him or where the are going, AND they were allowed to continue their journeys like they were exposed to the common cold.

With a mortality rate of 60% this begs the question should anyone who comes into contact with someone traveling from this region in Africa be quarantined for 21 days before entering the US?

Overblown? You do know that a doctor with Samiritans purse has Ebola, and he was wearing a freaking isolation suit.

The other US aid worker's job was to spay isolation suits with disinfectant. Neither job should have been "high risk".

It has a 21 day incubation period so an infected person with no symptoms could come to the US and spread it to countless people. Contain = quarantine so you would leave this up to those nations?

I actually had the swine flu and thought I was going to die. I don't want any part of this.

I'd say we were lucky that we did contain them, but there's no need to use that precedent to say this is not something we should worry about.

It's like a hurricane, just because one didn't hit you this year doesn't mean you are immune from future hurricanes. Already this Ebola virus is more deadly than any of the previous ones.

You do know the number of flights into/out of this region increased exponentially since the 70's greatly increasing the risk that an exposed individual will eventually board a flight and make it to the US, Europe or somewhere where the mobility of that nation will allow exposure to many more people in many more areas. Part of why this has been limited especially in the past is the people of this region used to rarely travel beyond their village and had few western visitors. That has all changed significantly over the last 20 years.

HoD is right. This virus is not easily spread like the flu.
