RE: Do southern states put the county on their license plates for political reasons?
Simple is not always better.
For instance, MN collector car plates that I have to put on my old Bimmer:
It shows the tone-deafness of government. If you own a classic car, it's a pretty damn good assumption the owner has some appreciation for design, history, color, style etc. A classic car actually cannot be a regular commuter car in MN, so the whole "Who cares a vehicle is an appliance why do you care about the license plate style?" doesn't hold much water to us gearheads.
There are some other options that I will spare you the details on, but imagine your favorite 60's Mustang, 70's Lincoln, or 80's BMW being paraded and driven in all it's glory and beauty, sporting one of these lame asse MN collector car plates.

GA does but it is not required.

Mine is like this one:
ones with county look something like this

The simple plate works better with those kinds of cars though, in my opinion. You don't want a loud shouty plate on a classic car do you?
I have one of those awful green and blue things on a black XFR; it looks awful and the colours just look terrible on the car.

Mississippi does, but I think they were going to do away with it.

What happened to the "Heart of Dixie" that used to be on all the Alabama plates?
It's down in the bottom right corner.
It's on all the plates just small now because they want to emphasize the different zones in the state.
Thanks. They make it hard to see. Figured being all politically correct and all they didn't want to emphasize the word "Dixie".

Do southern states put the county on their license plates for political reasons?

Madison County has occasionally been both 47 and 80 since there has been so much growth in the Huntsville area.

Va's "Antigue" plates, same thing as your collectors plate, are pretty cool. There's a couple different colors or styles, and I am terrible with trying to post this stuff, but they resemble the plate from the year/era that the car is from. So your 60's mustang would have a 1964 plate, 80's beemer, 1982 etc. Definitely stand out. Thinking of shifting my 84 Jeep CJ7 to one. You pay for it once and its yours forever, no renewal each year or two.

If you are on the cusp of being a southern state and dont have the county on your plate then you are officially not a southern state. IE MO/WV

In Kentucky You are allowed to run a license plate from the Year Car was Sold as on the Collector vehicle. Must carry the Collector tag in the trunk of the vehicle. KY Collector tags are only available on Cars 25 years and older. Must be a Kentucky plate but I see Them from on Collector Cars from States the Car was originally sold in also. IE a 1970 SS 454 Chevelle with a 1970 Black Plate CA tag. Might be all states allow this now.

Some states, like Virginia, require two plates one on the front and one on the back of the car. Other states, like NC only require the back plate. When I moved to VA I kind of thought that sucked. Guess more plates required equal more $$$ for DMV.

Missouri requires 2 plates.. But they were cheaper than the 1 MS tag I had.

I figure the real reason is $$ but the stated reason is it makes it easier for the police to identify a vehicle either coming or going. Anyway, another interesting fact, at leaast to me, is that VA has the most cars with vanity license plates. I think that is a function of cost as well as the vanity plates aren't really that much more expensive than normal plates in VA.

Same in MN. But, I have found it very hard to find an '85 MN plate in an acceptable condition and in a number format that is not still registered. Most are terribly beat up because who say "maybe one day someone will want this regular 1985 Minnesota plate?" Also, most '85 plates are probably just hanging in someone garage, not posted to ebay or where ever for $5 plus shipping.
Yes, this is the most First World Problem ever.
However, since I only have to run a rear plate I can put whatever plate, from whatever state I want, on the front of the car. I put a different plate on the front at every car show I present my car and since most of these shows you have to back into a parking spot, I can show the car with the cool front plate instead of the dumb-ace MN collector car plate.
