RE: I became fan because....
Grew up a Pig fan in a family full of pig fans. Actually had season tickets to them as a child. Poor treatment during a campus tour of the University of Arkansas led me to look into UALR and ASU. ASU had the degree I was looking for and one out.

Being a sports fan, I instantly became an ASU fan. My conversion away from pig fandom took about 3 more years, but its out of the way now. When I came to Jonesboro only my father had actually ever attended school here. Since I came, my sister got her degree from stAte, and my cousin starts her Freshman year in Jonesboro this fall.

All in ever since.

David Hines was my Jr. counseller at boys state. Good guy but I didn't know he even played football until I saw him lead the Indians from behind to beat USL in '75.

Bill Bergey and Fred Barnett were a couple of good ones. It seems that we used to have a pipeline to the Eagles.

Bergey was one seriously of my favorites

Wade Key (70-79) went to SWT.

Grew up watching razorback basketball. I overheard a couple of guys at work placing bets on college football games back in 2001. I jumped in and placed a bet on stAte winning and they all started laughing. stAte ended up winning the game and I started following them ever since. I took a pounding from pig fans for being an stAte fan. The last 3 season I have returned the favor.

Dad was a graduate, had a season ticket since I was able to walk. Only school I've ever pulled for. Grew up 10 minutes from Chapel Hill, I was the first grader that when asked do you pull for State (NCSU) or Carolina that answered Appalachian State. They have an excellent business and accounting program so I chose it over UNCCH, people couldn't believe it. Still glad I did, led me to a great wife and friends that could never be replaced. Great topic for the offseason.

Back in the fall of my senior year in high school (fall of 84), I applied to only one school, NC State. I actually wanted to be an aeronautical engineer, hence the application to NC State. I did get accepted in the winter.

I made a visit to App in October, with one of my best friends, who happened to have a brother that went to school there. We went to a football game, Furman, then enjoyed the victory celebration that night.

When I got back home, I put in an APPlication, later got accepted, and turned down NC State. I never did make a visit to NC State. My parents were highly pissed. They were telling me the amount of money I was turning down.

I'm a teacher now and probably making a quarter of what I could have made, but I don't regret it one bit.

I won't mention who I pulled for prior to App, I'm a bit embarrassed. 03-shhhh

I went to my first ASU game in 1975 when my brother in-law took me. ASU defeated La Tech in that game. I graduated from ASU in 1986. I was never a big pig fan.

You must mean basketball. Don't believe Arkansas and stAte have ever played in football.

I think he meant just a regular stAte football game.

Oh, stAte against someone other than Arkansas. Sorry, misread that. I apologize.

I started following App once I decided to go to school there, but it was experience of attending the win over IAA #1 Marshall during my freshman year that hooked me for good.

Moved within about 20 miles of stAte and went to one game in '75. Didn't go back til '78 when StAte beat Mcneese on a last play field goal. Never went to school there but my wife and kids did. Been going through thick and thin from '78 on to football, basketball, and baseball.

The first football game I ever watched on TV was Georgia Southern vs Furman for the 1AA national championship. I was hooked and began following Georgia Southern religiously after that and from there I enrolled 1989 and have been true blue every day since.

Posted from my mobile device using the CSNbbs App

I was attending GSC when the football program began. I remember seeing Erk walking through the Hanner complex with Vince Dooly HC of Georgia. We had nothing & I didn't know how we could compete or if the program could last. I love underdogs and in short order the team was competitive. I was hooked on ERK & the team and once we won that 1985 National Championship.

RE: I became fan because....
Moved to Statesboro in 1994 because my dad got a job teaching at GS. Went to some football games and enjoyed them, my CFB allegiance at the time was to Mich St. (where dad got his pHD) and at the time you would hardly ever see them on TV in Georgia, so I had plenty of room to root for GS. Graduated HS and went to Mercer which had no football team at the time, so I still followed GS from a few hours away. Transferred back home to Southern in 1999 so I got to live through the back to back championships at that time. Went on to receive my BA and MPA from Southern and am raising my kids as Eagles. Still have a slight split allegiance with MSU because that was my first college games ever attended, but if we ever meet in a bowl game (thank God that is at least possible now) or NCAA Tourney game, I will be pulling for Southern.

Another factor that really steeped my Southern fanhood is, I hate seeing people with a G plastered all over everything they own that have absolutely no connection to UGA, it just struck me as so lame and in-authentic to have so many bandwagon bulldog fans in the area that I didn't want to associate with that--I embraced Southern as the "little brother" and I can't wait until the day that we knock them off.

Agree, great offseason topic. Keep them coming.

RE: I became fan because....
Didn't pull for any college team growing up. My family (from NY) primarily watched professional sports if any. So I never had that predisposed family team (though my family did have a soft spot for ND, and my dad would pull for USC Trojans because he attended school there for a year). Went to high school in VA so a lot of friends were UVA or VT fans, but never really got into sports teams.
I started at GS in 94 and started going to a few football games. I am a pretty loyal fan once I do pick a team and since I had no other college team and GS was my school that's when I became a fan. I do understand why some will still pull for a team that you grew up cheering for, but don't understand why some have to piss on the school they actually attended. To me the school you went to should be first (if they have a team to pull for) and you continue to support the team from your childhood but never pull for them to beat your own school. jmo.

I will say that over the years my passion for all things GS has grown tremendously and my friends would consider me one the most rabid supporters. Though I think I'm no where near some that post on here.

Unlike many A-State fans so far, I did not start as a Razorback fan first. I started as an A-State fan back in the late 60's and added on the Razorbacks as a casual secondary back in 1978 when Lou Holtz suspended all those guys for the Orange Bowl. I also liked Ken Hatfield. But they handled our success very poorly and I ended it with them permanently a year or two ago.

2003 my senior year of high school. After I picked SWT (at the time) over A&M I started seeing what they were about. Never heard of them before then or knew anything about I-AA football.

I grew up a Georgia Tech Fan. In 1986, I attended Albany State College but I hated it. so I dropped out of school and worked for a year. in 1988, I enrolled at DeKalb College for a year. In the Jan. of 1989, I applied to UGA, USC and Georgia Southern. It was something about GSU that made me feel at home. I became a HUGE Eagles Fan when I attended my first Quarter in Fall of 1989. I fell in love with my school after I transfered to GSU!!!!! In 1993, I received my Masters degree in Criminal Justce from Georgia State; I'm still 100% TRUE BLUE!!!

I grew up sickened by anything having to do with the Crimson Tide or Auburn Tigers. Bama worship was huge. Bear was God. Saw an uncle pick a TV up and throw it through a window after a Tide loss. My sister had to reschedule her wedding due to Tide game. I grew up 45 miles form TROY and have lived on Key West as the director of the mental health center for 22 years. Great life. Good to be able to watch Trojans on tv. I drive 1000 miles to my mom who lives near Montgomery (3x year) and always schedule trip around at least one Trojan game for past 12 years. Have been a TROY fan for years longer and love the Belt. Love Crowe's Chicken ! BTW: Still hate those Bama and Auburn sweatshirts every person in Alabama is required to wear during Christmas shopping season.
Go SBC . Time for some more shrimp. Do it TROY !
