The academics angle was always a sham. I agree that health concerns will keep them from extending though.

The season is long enough...it was 10 games when I was kid and only about 10 bowl games.

RE: Can the CFB regular season be extended?
I'm working on an article which connects to this topic this week.

The "cost of attendance" and athletic stipend issue (for major programs) is actually going to allow major programs and conferences to extend the season without fear of push-back.

I propose that a "pre-season game" at home for Power 5 schools will allow them to all get their money-grab home games...while also allowing them all to increase strength of schedule (which will sweeten TV deals and get more fans in seats for the real "regular season").

The season might be 16 games for a few teams (1 pre-season, 12 regular season, 1 conference champ game, 2 playoffs)...which is a far cry from the 10 or 11 of yesteryear. But with the new "money" athletes are getting, I don't think they'll be much sympathy from the masses.

Ties look so ugly on records, though then again it may actually give perspective to people and pollsters since a win over another team in 4OT's easily could have gone the other way and doesn't make the team that won better than the one that lost.

And if anything the regular season needs to be shortened.

And you had as many as 60 more top division schools competing for that limited number of bowls.

Until they start facing the same lawsuits that the NFL is currently dealing with....remember the Judge threw out the settlement because the $$$ figure wasn't high enough....07-coffee3

Get rid of Overtimes in all Regular Season games HS, College and the NFL....Sudden Death overtime in Post Season Games....you have the 2 Point Conversion to try to win games...heck you have 60 Minutes to win games....07-coffee3

I agree. If they insist on breaking the tie for regular season games go back to the old high school rules. If the score is tied at the end of regulation, the team with the most penetrations wins, if the penetrations are tied, the team with the most yardage gained wins.

RE: Can the CFB regular season be extended?
The question has never been if they CAN. The question has always been if they SHOULD.

Every game they add ends up interfering more and more with the academic mission. There's no *magic* number where fewer than that does not interfere and more than that does interfere. It's a continuum.

They will find a way if there is enough money to be made out of it.

Ah....I was thinking of the playoffs included but actually most FCS teams play 12 games for regular season not 11.

nope. only get to play 12 on certain years in some kind of rotation. After 2014 it will be 2019 before they can play a 12 game schedule again. Most years they play an 11 game schedule

"Notable changes[edit]
For 2013, the FCS playoffs expanded for the first time since 2010. The Pioneer Football League champion now receives an automatic bid into the FCS playoffs, which increased to 24 teams.

Under a standard provision of NCAA rules, all FCS programs were allowed to play 12 regular-season games (not counting conference title games) in 2013, and also in 2014. In years when the period starting with the Thursday before Labor Day and ending with the final Saturday in November contains 14 Saturdays, FCS programs may play 12 games instead of the regular 11. After 2014, the next season in which 12-game seasons are allowed will be 2019.[1]"
