Yes, they play American Football. They play in stadiums ranging from a few thousand to more than 50,000.

Looks like some of the schools even have better attendance than some of the G5 schools.

Obviously the idea of inviting them into an American league would be absurd though. The talent level in Mexico is terrible compared to the U.S. and very few Americans would be willing to go play in Mexico.

I think it'd be a huge mistake honestly. It's going to be hard to get players to go play in a country that doesn't speak english and has a reputation for violence.

Also not a great option, but Rio would be a better option. Similar time zone to the U.S. east coast, growing NFL popularity and a country noted for warm beaches, beautiful women, and great night life. I think that would be a much bigger draw (but still not a great one) for players than Mexico City.

Although one is likely safe on this forum, I rarely click links unless I am very confident in the source. It's all to easy to download a virus, intentional or not, that way. Call me overly cautious if you want but that's the cyber world we live in. At some point I wonder if some American sports conference would ever or has ever considered expansion beyond the border to some extent. For that matter why not expand north into Canada. It is much more stable and safe in general. I presume there any many significant reasons why it hasn't ever been done or else we'd already have seen it happen.

As far as college athletics, it may take a vote of the Division I President’s Council to allow a foreign university to join that division of the NCAA. That's what happened with Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C., to become the first member from outside the U.S. to join the American college sports governing body. That was in Division II, not sure it has happened in DI yet.

You guys are missing the huge opportunity with the University of Puerto Rico.

How about having Texas-Arlington reinstates football and adding Jacksonville as a non football school?

Yes they do and it is very popular. I know folks in Monterry that are huge Saint fans. They play two NFL games every Sunday throughout Mexican broadcast TV.

UTSA , very intelligently, has their games broadcast in Spanish on radio in northern Mexico. When you cross over into Mexico, there are Cowboys and Longhorn baseball caps being worn all lover the place.

American football in Mexico is kind of like soccer in the US. Played mostly by suburban well to do. Not as popular as soccer and baseball but very recognizable. American football is non-existent in Brasil. The only places where you see football played outside of the US and Canada in the Americas is Mexico, Panama and Puerto Rico.

The NCAA was okay with Simon Frasier's application (heck, they were in the NAIA), but the Canadian government basically told them to withdraw from their plan.

The interior cities are a safe as American cities. The border towns are like the wild west.

Last year in June a neighbor of mine was pre-fishing for a Bass tournament on Falcon Lake near Zapata, Texas. They found an American citizen floating without their head

I was in Laredo in the Spring of 2011 and 11 people were shot in broad daylight near downtown by Zeta Cartel.

Had a buddy that lived in El Paso and worked for a logistics company. He saw a couple of heads sitting on the side of the road on the way to work; I believe that was in 2010.

Another college friend of mine grew up in Del Rio. One of his childhood friends was abducted for ransom money. His parents later got a video of their son getting a drill bit put through his temple. That was in 2008.

These are just some examples that prove American Cities near the border are not safe either. Still very dangerous.

Its not as dangerous as 2011 for sure when it was just Beirut on steroids. But still dangerous enough that I would not go there at night. Also El Paso/Juarez was especially bad at that time. Lots of stories of bullets coming accross into the US side back then.

I believe every word you said. The border towns are like the wild wild west and controlled by the drug cartels. I'm talking about major cities like Mexico City and Monterrey. You can safely fly in and out of those cities.

My best friend married a girl from Monterrey back in college and we spent a summer there at their house (Very modest by American standards). It was a wonderful experience accept for the food (We lived off of peanut butter and campbell's soup). Very often we would go to a bar and order a beer and the tender would just gratis. It's very out of the box thinking but wouldn't be cool for us to be the only international conference?

Basketball and baseball are most popular in Puerto Rico. The Puerto Rican universities are already in the NCAA DII. I'd be surprised if the biggest/flagship campus in San Juan (Rio Peidras) hasn't already explored moving DI.

I don't suppose travel costs would be anymore outrageous than Hawaii. I've always said I'd like to stay in our footprint (i.e. no NDSU), but I'd make an exception for Puerto Rico.

...in Puerto Rico?!

Just Wow

Basketball and baseball are most popular in Puerto Rico. The Puerto Rican universities are already in the NCAA DII. I'd be surprised if the biggest/flagship campus in San Juan (Rio Peidras) hasn't already explored moving DI.

I don't suppose travel costs would be anymore outrageous than Hawaii. I've always said I'd like to stay in our footprint (i.e. no NDSU), but I'd make an exception for Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico and big cities of Mexico airfare would be nominal. I started the thread in jest but it might not be a bad idea.
