I can agree with that. It could be a scouting event for under the radar players. I think we're arguing separate topics. The idea proposed by Vobserver and a few others is implying that we are in and win more of these battles than we actually do. The overwhelming majority of recruits with offers from big time schools on our rosters are transfers.

The Kentucky's and Purdue's that we beat regularly are schools that are actually pretty close to our level of play. They are P5 in name only. The top recruits we get are often the lowest tier recruits for the big schools. We like to say "we beat so-and-so for a recruit" when in reality they don't care that they lost guy #24 out of 25 on their list of players to one of the SBC schools. It's all good to them because they got Amari Cooper, Nick Marshall, Johnny Manziel, and rosters full of other 4 and 5 star athletes.

They way I see it, Penn State isn't taking anyone from GSU that wasn't going to get taken by UGA, GT, Auburn, etc.

Just one more big name program that will pass over the kids GSU scoops up and, hopefully, turns into stars.

At this level, it's more about coaching than it is talent... but you never want to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Quote:The radical arrangement appears to be a win-win for both programs: Penn State gets to personally evaluate high school players who would never travel to its camps in Pennsylvania, while Georgia State will get exposure to more high-profile recruits than normal.

Quote:“So it’s beneficial to both parties where Penn State can come down here, work our camp, and get to see the kids that they’re recruiting. And it benefits us by the amount of kids that are coming.”
It’s common for colleges to permit smaller colleges to attend their camps for evaluations. For example, Georgia State routinely grants access to schools such as LaGrange College and Clark Atlanta.
However, it’s rare (and maybe unprecedented) for colleges to invite a coach from a bigger program because he steals attention away from the host school.
Georgia State and Penn State are both FBS-level schools, but Miles said he’s fine with the situation due to the overall recruiting benefits.
“I don’t worry about being overshadowed by anybody — that’s just not a concern,” he said. “(Franklin’s) ego is not that way, and my ego is not that way.
“We’re not going to recruit the same person, you know? There’s no way. The Sun Belt doesn’t recruit against Penn State. Let’s face it: I’m not competing for kids against Penn State, or Georgia and Alabama. I’m just not. Nor will we ever. It is what it is.
“(This camp) is a big positive for both schools. We’re going to see some great players, and the kids are going to get coached up by two Division I staffs.”

That is an astounding quote to me. You are essentially saying that you'll back off of a recruit if they are too good, or get offers from places like Penn State.

Our last three coaches made it clear in the press that we wouldn't back off of recruits we wanted no matter who else was recruiting them and that we would only stop recruiting them when THE PLAYER told us to stop.

We offer all the top kids in GA even if we know we don't have a chance like here: 1) & 2). Check out all the known public offers we currently have Here

As much as we all have wishful thinking, the Sunbelt doesn't recruit against the BigTen. We had some close call with guys and almost stole them from GA Tech this past recruiting cycle. The Sunbelt may recruit for a player here and there with a power conference. But, overall the SunBelt coaches as a whole understand what Miles does. In addition, this is just one of 8 camps we'll have across GA.

Quote:Miles will have eight one-day camps in June, including road trips to Dalton, Columbus, Macon and Camden County.
“I want to get out around the state to see as many kids from different parts of the state as a I possibly can,” Miles said. “It makes it a lot easier for kids. Rather than kids from Camden County driving all the way up here, I’d rather go down there and take it to them.
“I’d rather take our show to people. It’s a chance to save the kids some gas money, and at the same time, get us out to be able to evaluate them.”

A player here and a player there can quickly add up to a big difference. Both App State and Georgia Southern at one point were very close on signing Kiante Walton, who ended up eventually at Indiana ... after a late offer.

You have to start somewhere ....

It's called "coach speak". A finally crafted language that comes in all varieties and dialects. What may work for some coaches doesn't work for others. Spurrier is brash, Richt soft spoken, Bobby Bowden made you think his guys couldnt beat eggs, its all part of the program and each man's style. Saban is closed lipped, While some will show you the playbook.
There is zero doubt in mind that if a Penn St caliber recruit expressed an interest in GSU that Coach Miles would recruit him til the ink was on the paper. This is a mutually beneficial opportunity for both programs. We will use each other and hopefully both will prosper. In the long run, more so than Penn St.

RE: Penn State Coaching Staff to Co-Host Football Camp with GSU Staff
I can see both sides of the coin on this one. I figure try it for a year and see how it works. Maybe they get more talent to the camp and a kid or two picks GSU after they meet the coaching staff adn they would have never had this shot because the kid wouldn't have come if PSU wasn't there. Thats the best case scenerio.

The worst case scenerio is spelled out good int his thread, PSU finds the diamonds in the rough and steals them from GSU. With PSUs recruiting and scholarship restrcitions, I could see them looking for these type of kids that thoguth they wouldn't get a P5 offer.

I'll hold judgement until we see what both recruiting classes look like. This could be a fun thread to resurrect on signing day. See if PSU signs anyone out of Georiga.

RE: Penn State Coaching Staff to Co-Host Football Camp with GSU Staff
The key to this is in the percentage. Is it possible that Penn State will find a diamond in the rough type player at our camp that they normally wouldn't have seen otherwise and eventually signs with them? Sure. Maybe they even find 2 or 3. But the increase in the turnout means this will be much more beneficial for GSU. If the numbers being reported are true and the camp increased from last years 150 to this years 350 then this argument is stupid. That's an extra 200 kids that GSU can now look at and build relationships with. I'd be much more willing to bet that the percentages GSU signs more of those kids is much higher than the former example sign with Penn State.

Having said that, this isn't something I would want done continuously for years to come. We are still trying to establish ourselves as an FBS program. If we have to piggy back and use CTM's relationship with Franklin to get us in front of a few more kids then so be it. But the detractors are right. Eventually we want to be at the point where we don't have to do that. To suggest we are at that point now though is ludicrous.

Unbelievable that GaSt fans have so little faith in their team. This is
something brought on by a loser's mentality
and a desperate coach stretching for any way out. It's a
denigration to the Sun Belt and should be voted on at the
upcoming conference meeting to
prohibit it and to ensure it from ever happening again.

Like saying, Welcome to Sun Belt territory Penn State. Want GSU to set up a camp so that you do not
have to waste any time or effort in choosing which exact sleepers might help you best.

You people are nuts. Absolutely nuts. When's the last time anyone here recruited against Penn State? Let alone won a battle against them. This isn't about thinking we can't recruit against P5 schools. We do that. Go look at our offer list. This is about inviting a school down that we don't recruit against at all and having a better turnout to a single prospect camp. It's likely nothing more than either a small bump for us or a small ding.

We'll find out in the next couple of years if the recruiting strategies of this coaching staff are working. Hard to talk about whether this is a good or bad idea. I've noticed a trend though, Georgia State detractors are quick to say this is a terrible idea. Those that are neutral say it's a win-win and seem to be in agreement that it's a good idea.

The number one prospect in the country will be at GSU's facility.

Penn State is on probation. They will take many lower recruits than they normally would. If Georgia State is too scared to recruit against PSU and everyone else then how are they ever going to really succeed. If GaSt cannot attract recruits on their own then would hate to be beholding to Penn State leftovers or dependent on them. Wouldn't help the image of any school or conference.

That's interesting since Penn State already has 13 commits and is #2 on the 247 rankings. Nine four stars.

So perhaps that means they are the perfect team to partner with. They don't have as many spots to take a flyer on a fringe player and hope he turns out for them. They need to hit on all of them. If you think the probation will hinder them in the slightest from getting high quality players then you don't know James Franklin.

I see the value in your point that Georgia State needs to be able to attract talent on their own. No one should question that. But as we continue to establish ourselves as an FBS team I appreciate the creativity of this plan. As I said before. Cool idea. Not something I would want continued over the next several years.
