Great post, thanks for the link. Agree with Kiper's assessment on JW. I Still think (hoping!) he's prime for late 1st round for the PACK.

RE: Jimmy Ward - too low
Dear God,

Please have the Bears trade down in the first to pick up the DT there and up in the second to pick up Jimmy..

That is all...

Wow.. honestly, I 've said it on this board before and I'll say it again.. what a leap this program has made from the days of the longest losing streak in the nation (my freshman year)..

You look at Ward's highlights and even during the great years of 2003-2005... is an unfair analogy Michael Turner is to RB as Jimmy Ward is to Safety? Time will tell....

RE: Jimmy Ward - too low
I gotta say, the scouting reports on Turner seemed to revolve around the lower level of competition he played (and questions about his pass catching, but seemingly mostly the level of competition) and thus he didn't go until the 5th round despite his measurables. The fact that Ward, on a team not known for defense or especially secondary play, in the MAC, is getting high marks, it's interesting.

I think his sound play against bigger time competition is really helping too.

I guess the post-season play in the Senior bowl and practices set him apart.

Something that struck me about this, albeit inconsequential, was he used NIU, not Northern Illinois.

17. S Jimmie Ward, NIU

NFL Comparison: Poor man’s Kenny Vaccaro.

Where He Wins: Has very good backfield vision and ball awareness to work through blocks and make a play on ball carriers. Comfortable in zone coverage to work off one receiver and close on another. Very good tackler, takes solid pursuit angles and closes assertively but not uncontrollably. Does not mind slowing down smaller slot receivers or contending with tight ends downfield.

Where He Fits: Works his way closer to the line of scrimmage, creeping up to cover inside targets. Does very well to keep everything in front when playing that role, but can also turn and run and stick with breaking routes in man coverage. Can absolutely play that third S role early on.

Draft Projection: Should be a first-round pick.

The kid has a natural ability no doubt about it.

I may actually watch the NFL draft this year. I agree with jjpretender...praying the Bears pick him up.

A couple of those comments are interesting:

"Intangibles: Comes with some maturity and character red flags, according to several NFL scouts and coaches. Inconsistent personal discipline."

I don't recall ever hearing anything as an issue with Jimmie. I don't think I ever heard about him getting arrested, getting suspended, etc.

"Has an injury history over his career."

I don't recall him missing many games and he played the start of last season with a cast on his hand and might have had a broken foot all season, and yet he still played at a high level

Noooo....Cowboys will suck forever as long as J Jones continues to micromanage everything. Jimmie deserves to be on a good team.
LOL I'm happy for wherever he lands. The kid is a great player & deserves a chance.

That leaves out the Bears.

RE: Jimmy Ward - too low
And the Bears are looking for a safety too, if Ward is still there in the 2nd round.

I don't recall him missing any games his entire career due to injury so I don't know where the injury concerns would come from.
