If they can do a renovation a la GS or Texas State with an upper deck and get to 30k seats they will be more than fine for the future.

Minutemen ranked 123

I know app was ranked 126 and geo south 124 and geo state was also already ranked, but app and geo south get a pass from most people because they are in their FBS transitional. Geo state as we all know is way young with a coach many see good things in. Umass has been around a little longer and isn't in conference yet no point in adding another program with a bad ranking and I know they all would but I believe umass is in a different category. Would rather add a school from FCS that has unknown potential then a FBS school that is known and lacks promise.

Hahaha. That's not even a picture of Mark Whipple on that article. That's some other random Browns coach.

We're getting better. We had to completely re-build the team from nothing after Kevin Morris left the cupboard bare.

It's only been TWO full seasons in FBS. Recruiting doesn't happen over night at this level.

Well it is possible we are simply expanding the term Sun Belt.....to a more literal meaning......a place where the Sun Shines......while Idaho and UMass are technically above what we think of Sun Belt.....the Sun Does shine there too.....So We As THE Sun Belt......could go anywhere......Like Cancun.....or Yellowknife....or for that matter Alaska most parts of the year.....except those long days.....where there is no sun.....so I guess Alaska and the Northwest Territories are out......but dang we must not be so critical......so what if we use to have a footprint.....now we have more of a size Gazillion Hoof print..

Maybe I should just look at it in a literal sense lol

I really think that UMass will start to turn it around similar to how WKU started to turn it around.

This is all fair game. Charlie Molnar was a career assistant coach and when everyone from our A list turned us down, he was hired. The guy pissed everyone off, players, his own recruits were transferring etc.

Then a UMass donor, the same who donated 2.5 Mill to the Press and Skybox donated the 880k buyout of Molnar contract.

Mark Whipple accepted the job, who coached us to the 1998 FCS Championship game, coached in the NFL and Miami.

We will be better, but our offensive line looked terrible in the spring game, all freshmen. The rest looked good and most next year players are not on campus. That includes Marshall's quarterback Blake Frohnapfel and a Penn State WR.

Regarding attendance, we went from 10k to 15K with terrible teams. Look for another large boost to attendance this year.

We open with Boston College and will have 3 games on campus. The Performance Center will open in July and this is a video with it still under construction.

Again all the above is fair game.

I'm glad I didn't post about liberty because you umass fans aren't just calling me a hater, I could see umass being in the belt for a couple years but not a long time, I have qualms with umass past it being a possible sun belt Idaho 2.0 just because we would e adding another Indy FBS team needing a home with a garbage record from the last year and far from any other school, I think both programs can and will rebound but I think that they don't have a long future in the belt

Lets be clear. UMass is interviewing the next 2-4 years for the AAC. That's what the ramp up in facilities and bringing Whipple back is about. Idaho seems headed in the opposite direction.

Another reason to not move on umass tbh, no point adding a team that is only looking to move to a difference conference with perhaps only a temporary edge, only conferences i hope app leaves the belt for are p5s

Reason to add UMass: Basketball games for us. Would help raise the profile of the league. (I know they aren't bringing their basketball here, but we could get a few games with them)

Reason not to add UMass: WE DON'T NEED ANOTHER TEAM.

To me, that is the only argument that is pertinent.

RE: One reason we shouldn't bring in UMass
I am with your Rev but back in March the Sun Belt apparently voted to expand to 12 football playing teams by June 1. That came straight from our AD. I have to believe in March the conference leaders knew about the proposal to allow championship games with less than 12 teams, and they still voted to add a 12th.

The fact that no one has been added yet can mean several things-- I would guess the most obvious is that after JMU and Missouri St. are off the table that there is not a clear choice on a 12th at this point. 37 more days-- time is ticking. It will be very interesting to see what the conference does.

The timing of the adds the last 2 years doesnt make it encouraging that anyone gets added this year

Missouri is primarily a midwestern, but its a border state and a quarter to a third of the state in the southeast corner is southern.

However, when there is serious discussion of bringing in Liberty, who has never shown the ability to succeed at the FSC level that UMass has, turning down UMass because:

... is absurd. The formal transitional process in terms of being neither eligible for the FCS championship nor a bowl game may only take two years, but clearly it takes, at a minimum, an entire recruitment to senior class cycle for the development transition to complete.

When crafting reasons that the Sunbelt shouldn't just take the money and run with UMass until a clear candidate emerges in its region, the geographical argument has a lot more weight to it than the competitiveness of the program argument.

That's up in the air, which is an excellent reason to not add UMass now. Whether or not a 12th team is needed for a CCG has not yet been decided. How much extra money it means for the full-time FB schools in the Sunbelt hinges on whether its required to get a CCG. On a 50/50 split distributed as a travel subsidy, its $125,000 in the year that you go to play in Massachusetts, which ought to be a little extra money, but not much. With a CCG that can be bid for between ESPN, FS1, NBCSN and CBSSN, its probably a bit more than that.

Unlike an FCS call-up, there is June 1 2014 deadline on making the decision for the 2015/16 year, because, after all, UMass is already FBS. So the Sunbelt is not under the same decision deadline as it has been with FCS call-ups. It can make the decision after the CCG decision is made, one way or the other.

Steve1981 and EmeryZach, what do UMASS fans have to say about the possiblity of Sun Belt football only? Is it being mentioned much on your boards? Just curious.

It's kind of quiet. Most fans would support a Sun Belt move.

To me, that is the only argument that is pertinent.

If so I would expect 6 games a year so that if NMSU is added all sports that each member school gets at least 1 home and 1 away game against UMASS over a 4 year period. None of the only 4 games a year where the conference get to pick a choosewho get to play them.

The majority of them obviously would love AAC for All-Sports, but understand that the Sun Belt for Football-Only is necessary if we don't get an invite to the AAC. Going independent for more than a year or two would be almost impossible.

I personally like the Sun Belt just for their fan support alone. Great fans in the Sun Belt. They are much more dedicated to football than MAC fans. Bigger football culture in the Sun Belt.

Its a big difference in culture. In the NE and Midwest only the P5 are really followed for football. Used to drive me nuts in the CAA. Their board is either dead or talking basketball this time of year.

UMass needs to get fans to football games, so they can talk about basketball.

If you divide the contiguous United States into four quadrants using the geographic center at Lebanon Kansas, Missouri and Texas A&M are in the southeastern United States. All 10 Big East teams are in the northeastern United States-even Creighton.
