That is the way it should be and simply reflects the conference is getting stronger with growing fan support. Some teams will not do as well as expected and my number one team on that list is ULL. Hope everyone wins some of those early games to get the season started well.

I agree. Wish everyone well in all games except one. I also agree about Louisiana. I think they'll be good. Hudspeth doesn't put out bad teams. I just don't think they're going to the godsend most of their fans are expecting.

Lol! Never seen so much wishful thinking in my life! Good luck!

Bro, you know your programs are winning when you are hated so much! LOL! No matter what they say about Cajun fans, it all starts with winning. Football, Baseball, Basketball, Softball, Tennis!

Because I think your team may be over rated, I hate you? Actually I enjoy the Cajuns and have for years as my second team. I just think your team will not live up to the hype and will be surprised if they do. Unlike many here, neither do I think your coach is the super coach that some do. He has faded in the bigger games on too many occasions. But that said, if your team is as good as you guys think, then I wish you every success in that major bowl that we all want.

That is why they play the games my friend. I have no problems with your opinion and I certainly don't take it as an insult as some of the other fans do on this board. Huspeth may be a bit over rated but that's hard from me to say when I've watched him win 3 consecutive bowls, something no other SBC coach has accomplished including the Legend Blakeney.

I think it will be an interesting game when State comes to Lafayette, Anderson will have the chance to prove Hudspeth is over rated or prove to be the bargain basement hire I thought he was when State hired him.
That will be a big game for both teams.

This is true. Larry Blakeney is 2 of 5 in bowls. The losses were to tougher teams than Louisiana has played, in my opinion, but it takes nothing away from what HUD has done. Three in a row is impressive no matter the competition.

Arkansas State's run won't last forever, and maybe this year the coaching carousel catches up to them.

Somewhat. I don't expect either to be a real problem. South will be fine. Troy brings back 8 of 10 o-line and a monster transfer from ole miss, all of our running backs, most of our wide receivers, with the addition of two very talented JUCO receivers and our OC. This offensive unit could not have been in better shape when adding a new QB into the mix.

I think where we differ is in QB talent on paper. Bridge sounds like the real deal, but on paper we have three guys who's credentials far exceed that of Brandon Bridge.

Bridge was the SWAC Newcomer of the Year as a freshman at Alcorn State, passing for 2,086 yards and 19 touchdowns and rushing for 601 yards and eight more TDs. I'll put that up against any JUCO accolades.

USA returns 9 of 10 on the offensive line depth chart (one first team all-SBC, one second team), plus the return of their top offensive lineman who missed last year with a knee injury and add a JUCO OT signee that should push his into the rotation. They also return all-conference honorable mention Jay Jones at running back, 1st team all-SBC TE Wes Saxton, 2nd team all-SBC receiver Shavarez Smith, all time leading receiver Jereme Jones, deep threat Danny Woodson, Jr and will welcome the addition of Alabama transfer wide receivers Marvin Shinn and Josh Magee, both of whom were very impressive in practice while redshirting.
This offense is set up to roll if Bridge can do his part, which all indications are that he can.

Well hell if he dominated the SWAC let's go ahead give him he Heisman Trophy.

Alcorn St was 2-8 in 2011, the season he was kicked off the team. They were 5-6 in 2010. The year you are hanging your hat on for him to be the Saviour of your football team.

Yeah, they were 2-8 the year he wasn't being played by a new head coach who got himself canned by December of his first year by alienating the team, the alumni and administration with his outrageous buttholery.
I know Bridge was only putting up those numbers against FCS teams and Mississippi State and not power programs like Pearl River CC or Iowa Central CC like your guys, but I still find them comforting.

You definitely cherry picked those stats to make him look better than he was. He had 19 passing TDs but also 13 picks! In the SWAC! He had 8 rushing TDs but 27 sacks! You conveniently left those stats out. He wasn't even SWAC Offensive Player of the Year, he was newcomer of the year. He didn't even win the job again his sophmore year at Alcorn State, in the SWAC! Someone beat him!

We have ESPN's 27th ranked HS QB from 2012 in Brandon Silvers. He has greyshirted/redshirted and has four to play. Paper to Paper, I'll put him up against SWAC NCofY anyday.

I'll see your 2,086 yards, 19 Tds, 13 picks, and 27 sacks in the SWAC and raise you with the NJCAA 1st Team All-American QB in Dontreal Pruitt, who set an NJCAA record. 3939 yards, 45 TDs, 7 picks, 6 Additional Rushing TDs, and 1 Sack (to your 27). Team finished 1st in the NJCAA by winning the Title Game.

We also have the QB who played for the #2 team in Connor Bravard. He has a 67-2 record from HS through JUCO. The #3 QB is going to Louisville with Bobby Petrino.

I'd put all three guys up against "Brandon SWAC-MASTER Bridge" anyday. (More like SACK-MASTER, 27 sacks and all...). I'm giving you a hard time about the SWAC comments, but I do think he'll perform better than he did in his SWAC days. Just not on par with what Troy's bringing to the table.

Last year at South, Bridge had 4 Sacks, 2 INTs, and 1 TD. That ratio looks awfully familiar. For anyone to say South and Troy's QB rosters are similar based on a South Alabama spring game (what else would you go by??) is ludacris. Based on all of that, this faith in Brandon Bridge to be the next coming seems awfully manufactured.

EDIT: Just to show you how bad the SWAC is, App State was 4-8 and ranked 10 spots higher than a 9-3 Alcorn State who plays in the SWAC. The SWAC gets no respect because they're aweful. Bridge may be good, but I wouldn't be throwing around his SWAC days to make him look good.

13-24 197 yards 1 TD 4 sacks

10 carried for 103 yards. Long of 78. That means the other 9 carries were for 25 yards.

Not bad numbers for a FCS quarterback against Miss St in a game they lost by 30+

If you are comforted by those numbers so be it.

Do you know why he was removed from the team?

Its much more about the talent on roster than the coaching. We've got only 11 or so players left who were around pre conference title run. That means in the next couple years we'll see whether or not our recruiting was effective even with the coaching changes.

The one good thing is that we've not lost a single starter to a transfer in this time...which shows the coaching changes have not bothered the players.

This year will be especially telling, because it appears that Fredi Knighten will indeed get the QB job, and there are still a lot of fans who question whether he can throw the ball. We'll know quickly.

The Jags will take of business when you guys come to the city. Going to be a fun day. You enjoy calling us SoBama, but we can also play that childish little game.

Time will tell on the outcome of the game. I can think of better places to spend my Friday, but since the Trojans will be there, I will be there.

So is short for South. Bama is short for Alabama. It's who you are. If you don't like your name you can petition to have it changed to the University of Alabama's Mobile campus.

The world is full of smart a$$ wannabe comedians and your attempt is weak. Bama is the University of Alabama-Tuscaloosa. We are the University of South Alabama, USA, South Alabama or simply "South", but you already know that. Calling is SoBama is an insult. Like referring to Troy as Troy State. Get it?

Luckily there are plenty of dumb a$$, uptight, you hurt my feelings, message board whiners to offset all us smarta$$ people out there.

I couldn't care less if people call us Troy or Troy St. SoBama is along the same lines as Ark St. Now that I know it bothers you that much it's extremely doubtful that I will stop calling you by your abbreviated name.

Ha Ha. I'll bet it does. Have a good evening and I'll have to admit that Troy is light years ahead of South football wise, but we're coming on strong and hope to give y'all the game of the year @ Ladd.

In terms of history, Troy is light years ahead of USA. But in terms of talent and coaching, the gap is much closer. Light weeks maybe.

I really think you are overrating the achievements of your guys at the JC level in comparison to what Bridge did as a freshmen in FCS, but I doubt we'll ever find common ground there.
Be that as it may, here are some cherry-picked numbers for you: 11 of 20 for 235 yards, one TD, 0 interceptions and an additional 54 yards rushing. That's what Bridge did against Troy last year (his last game before injuries began affecting him). I never even considered using the USA spring game as a measuring stick. I know your defense was far from impressive, but that's still an FBS game I can judge Bridge on while you still need to project what your guys may do.
I'm not saying Bridge will be great or your guys won't. What I'm saying is that neither team knows what will happen and to assume Troy is in better shape at QB based on JC stats I'd not a position I agree with.

Posted from my mobile device using the CSNbbs App

Very good numbers when you consider he was surrounded by mediocre FCS talent while putting them up.
I'm comforted by those plus those the ones he racked up against Troy.
As to his departure from Alcorn, I believe it was because of conflict with the new head coach who basically ran him and some others off. It turned into a full blown mutiny with the rest of the team and alumni and he was suspended and fired by the end of the year.

We may not ever agree, you're right. Those FCS numbers, regardless of the award he won, aren't good no matter what league you play in. 13 picks and 27 sacks is aweful. Basically you're saying Bridge is better than the all-time record setting NJCAA QB just because Bridge has FCS experience. You won't find a lot of people who will agree with that stance.

Bridge's performance against Troy was extremely impressive. He'll have a leg up in terms of confidence for this game. I'll give you that. But if you recall, we were discussing the QB situations of our teams. There are 12 games on a schedule and he'll have to prove he can do what he did at Troy in all 12. I like our guys chances in 12 better than Bridge's chances. As far as your game goes, its Game 8. It won't take 8 games for Troy's QB to gel in our offense. That's an exorbitant amount of time to get ready. It won't be a question mark when Troy rolls into Mobile, our system has been too good for too long to not be firing on all cylinders by Game 8.

Our defense is awful and we all know it. No secret. We have a few JUCO guys and transfers from big colleges that may help, but the defense hasn't been good since 2008, so I can't say whether they'll turn it around or not. I know South lost their DC and some important players. That is a bigger question mark than QB in my opinion. Though, Troy has rarely had problems with SBC defenses in the last 8 years so it may not even matter when you play us. You had the best defense in the SBC (21ppg vs conference) by a good margin, and we still dropped 34 points on you. You can say it was all Corey Robinson, but again, in Game 8 we'll be rolling with another talented QB. We've steamrolled the belt with less talented QBs than we have now.

One difference in our QB situations is that it seems you have one decent QB to look at. I keep hearing about how Troy's unknown at QB might be a problem. The difference is we have four extremely talented QBs. There is little chance that all four are going to suck. If anything, they will make each other better. And with 90% of our offense and our OC back, the same system we've ran for 8 years will make the transition much easier than most other places in the country. QB is not as much of a question mark as many on here think. Three QBs on our roster have better accolades than Corey Robinson, Levi Brown, and Omar Haugabook had coming in and they dominated the belt under our system.

I'm a "glass half full" kind of guy, but you make me look like the world's biggest pessimist by comparison.
I'm hopeful Bridge can do well. His FCS numbers as a true freshman (and FCS is greater than JUCO, IMO) surrounded by lesser talent make me think that as a redshirt senior who has taken meaningful snaps in FBS games and shown great physical talent he will have a good year. Did I mention that Charles Johnson of the NFL Network said he was the most impressive QB at the Manning Passing Academy last year? I'm optimistic but I know that things sometimes don't work out like we expect. Luckily USA has a solid backup returning in Trey Fetner, an impressive redshirt sophomore in Grant Powell, and Matt Foyd will be transferring in from USF this summer with two years of eligibility. USA will have a solid running game, a really good offensive line and probably the best receiving corp in the conference. They are in their third year in their spread offense that really started getting results last year and that should make life better for whoever takes the snaps.

I'm not slamming Troy's QB candidates, but I have a hard time seeing why Troy's coaches, if they had two "extremely talented" QB's on campus felt the need to sign not one, but two JC QBs. And those QBs were apparently not threatened by each other or the guys they saw on the roster either.
Pruitt put up great numbers at East Mississippi, but EMCC might have had the best defense in the history of JC last year (Jag DE signee Jimmie Gipson III was part of that defense) and Pruitt was allowed to rack up stats against demoralized teams in 60 and 70 point wins, so his numbers don't wow me too much. I think the EMCC coaching staff ran up a lot of scores and they are really unpopular with their counterparts in the Mississippi JC ranks right now.
Bravard put up solid numbers but there has to be a reason why his only other offer was from Southern Illinois, and Pruitt's flashy stats only resulted in offers from Troy, ULM and UAB. I know they are both not very tall, but that can't be the only reason.

Again, I am not saying Troy won't find a solid QB from it's pool of candidates, only that assuming their untested prospects are better than USA's more experienced options just doesn't compute with me.
It's a wash at best, in my opinion.

A very well thought out post. I agree about USA having the best WR corps in the SBC. Hard not to with three Alabama receivers on the roster. Troy is close behind, as they've been in the Top 17 in passing every year for 8 years. The rest of the league has some catching up to do with their air attacks.

Troy does have a QB with FBS game experience in Dallas Tidwell. He was Corey Robinson's mop up guy. As for adding two JUCO QBs, its standard practice to have 4 or 5 QBs on the roster. Before we added the two JUCOs we had two QBs and maybe a walk on who wasn't going to play anyway. The addition was a numbers decision, not necessarily a talent decision. But if you're going to add two QBs might as well grab two with really good credentials.

I'll say one more thing. Just because they are JUCOs doesn't mean they should be underplayed (or overplayed). Cam Newton and Nick Marshall were both JUCOs, neither of which were 1st Team All-Americans in the JUCO ranks. (Not saying our guys are better than them). There have been several JUCOs to play in FBS football over recent year that that had great careers in FBS football.

You've made some good points. I wish you all the best in all but one!

I believe JUCOs can do well. I hope they can, USA signed seven on defense this year to help make up for their losses.
Best of luck to you this year as well, except for....you know.
