We are going but not gone yet, so here is our extremely young offensive line video from spring ball. The opening has a part glimpse of the new football facility.

That's the way to schedule. Great to have a 69K AQ sized football stadium to play opponents in.

Let me bold this for you.

Here is a quote from the Gazette.

Quote:At first glance the University of Massachusetts and Florida International scheduling each other in football doesn’t seem overly newsworthy in Amherst, Miami or anywhere in between. Two schools that were 1-11 and lost to Championship Subdivision teams in 2013, are playing each other in 2015 and 2018. Simply, it looks like teams that have been lousy just filling their schedules out and creating home games.

Maybe that’s all it is. But the game could represent both UMass’ belief that it’ll be ready to compete for a bowl bid in 2015 and a potential change in its approach to scheduling.

2015 shapes up like a pretty important year for UMass football as it’s the last in the Mid-American Conference. If the Minutemen haven’t already secured a new league before then, that year is an audition.

...

The other point that makes UMass vs. FIU noteworthy is the 2015 game’s location. According to FIU’s press release (UMass hasn’t officially announced it), the 2015 game will be in Amherst not Foxborough. That’s the first nonconference game scheduled for the newly renovated McGuirk Stadium. That would mean there would be two MAC games at Gillette Stadium that season.

If UMass is starting to schedule nonconference opponents willing to play at McGuirk, it could mean UMass is setting the wheels in motion to play five games at McGuirk and just one at Gillette. Under NCAA rules, if they have six home games, the Minutemen could either play three games in each venue or five in one place and one in the other. A split of four and two is not an option.

Umass ready for a Bowl bid? 2015 gives us a chance

It's nice that UMass is trying to improve their chances at a decent record with more manageable OOC matchups, but I don't think 2015 is the year to look for a bowl bid. Being their last year in the MAC, I doubt the conference office will do them any favors in securing a bowl bid at 6-6 or 7-5 as they're on their way out the door.

Nor should they... UMass is not in a spot where they are going to have to win a division *or* win 7-8 games in a year when the MAC only has five 6 win teams..

The bottom of the MAC is very weak. You can argue the middle is not very strong as the Sun Belt kicked the MAC's ass in bowl games.

RE: Umass leaving the Mac
This is an annual thing for UMass football fans if you read their message board.

2 years ago most were VERY optimistic about Charley Molnar just like their old FCS coach they just hired. Most were talking 4-5 wins, maybe sneak a MAC Championship.

... Then they went 1-11

Last year they were talking about how improved they would be after a year in FBS and more FBS recruits in the system. Maybe, just maybe bowl eligibility.

... Then they went 1-11

This year they regressed backwards to hiring an FCS coach for $200,000 and they are talking bowl eligibility again and AAC and sell-outs and all sorts of the same.

... They will go 1-11 again likely.

lather, rinse, repeat. You gotta give them credit for their perpetual optimism though, the MiamiHawkTalk board is overly pessimistic. If hiring a FCS will guarantee success just because he once won a championship at a lower level, then Miami Football is set to be FBS national champs because our new Coach went 74-7 and was in 5 D2 National Championship games and won 3. Wahoo!

... If UMass gets crushed again as I suspect they will, then reality will really start to set-in that FBS independence is going to be a tough row to hoe for more than a year. Temple, Indiana, etc will crush them too so I don't understand why they are so excited about their 2015 schedule. To each their own.

You do realize the MAC and Belt had *1* Bowl game right, and it was against the Sun Belt champions?

Are we *already* at the point where UMass fans are going to start crapping all over the MAC because the conference forced you guys to make a decision.

If UMass has the highest attendance for Aug 30, how will the MAC frame that. Hopefully the MAC will have several on campus sell-outs before Sept 27th.

Not really crapping on the MAC, but to say in 2015 we can not have 4 MAC wins is crapping on UMass. We'd have to play less bad to have 3 MAC wins and one good game. (-:

Looking forward to having the 3 B teams (Balling Green, Ball State, and Buffalo) at McQuirk this year. They are some very good teams.

Not really crapping on the MAC, but
That reads like an admission that you were "kind of" crapping on the MAC ...

Quote: ... to say in 2015 we can not have 4 MAC wins is crapping on UMass.
Its a long way from it being at least remotely possible to have 4 MAC wins and for it to be a better than 50:50 chance to have a bowl bid, especially since UMass would be fortunate to come out of its 2015 OOC schedule with any wins, so odds are it needs 6-7 MAC wins to go bowling in 2015, and a MAC season that leaves the MAC with just as many bowl slots to fill as it has bowl eligible teams.

Sure its not impossible, but "looking for" a bowl bid suggests its 50:50 odds or better, which is putting the cart before the horse. First have the four win season with indications pointing toward better success the following year, and then start looking toward a year where UMass is bowl eligible.

"Boston College Fans travel well to a "road" game as clsoe to them as their opponents.

Yes you are, and no it's not.. Realistically 4 wins in 2015 would be a heck of an accomplishment for an FCS team to reach after just three seasons in the FBS. It's been done but it's damn rare.

That's not a slam on UMass, that is just observed history...

I still like the MAC. Can't blame them for doing what they needed to do. I would have been fine for All-Sports in the MAC. I personally think the A-10 is going to start falling apart soon.
