Now taking Georgia Southern & App State to me are non-starters, as I think they will have a quick jump to FBS. They won't be running the tables like they did in FCS, but they will do well and I see them in bowl eligibility consistently for years to come. Us? I see us as a project using the dreaded word "Potential". (and yes, I still count Texas State as a move up, given we have been fully FBS for a whopping ONE year).

I think that is the case. We debated JMU, Missouri State and Liberty for weeks; however, turn around and say no FCS move ups. Now that is confusing.

True, unless they are thinking UMass, probably not.
FBS teams have to declare before July 1st instead of June 1st.
Personally have doubts they will do anything this year.

At this point, the possibilities are either Liberty or EKU and perhaps UMASS could be announced to join in 2 years. JSU, Lamar...sorry! JMU...have a good life in FCS.

Based upon your set of choices then EKU is the clear winner.

Have not heard a word from them.

Personally talked to some BOT members who are in favor of pursuing a FBS invite. President Meehan hasn't mentioned for or against to me during any conversations. May have a chance to see him this week, if so I will ask. Not promising a direct answer as the usually leaves himself an out.

Sounds like they do not know what they want right now.

Not knocking you but are we that desperate that the above teams are in our footprint? I know times are hard, but geez. If I misinterpreted your post, I apologize.

No way are we desperate and really times aren't that hard. I'd honestly prefer NOT adding anyone this year.

- Missouri State will still be there, and maybe a year of talking will change their mind.
- JMU isn't going anywhere, and another year of pressure from donors might be able to get them to jump.
- EKU isn't going anywhere, and could use another year to get their ducks in a row.
- Liberty isn't going anywhere, and if the above still say no, we can always add them.

The only thing we "sacrifice" is a championship game in 2016, which we didn't have before, and odds are good the game itself wouldn't pay much anyway (dividing it by 12).

To me, we are in a great position to wait for the best possible add.

It seems (and who really knows in the presidents' minds? It could simply be that they are the one making public noise right now that gives off that vibe) that EKU leapfrogged Liberty in appeal. IF that is the case (and it's a big IF), then Liberty is the fallback fallback plan.

To me, Liberty or JMU are the only ones that should be invited this year because they are ready to go NOW. Otherwise, let Missouri State or EKU take a year to get ACTUALLY ready.

I'm talking football only here. I see it as a plausible option ONLY if Idaho is set in our long term plans. There is no reason not to pursue Montana and Montana State. I realize Montana said no to the WAC a few years ago, but it doesn't hurt to inquire. Montana is like JMU, great fanbase and facilities but with administrations sticking their heads in the sand. Nonetheless they'd all help legitimize Idaho in the conference and strengthen our main sport. Your top FCS schools left in no particular order, that are ready now (i.e. App St and GA So) and that we could possibly have a shot at are: JMU (long shot, try again next year?), Montana, Montana State, North Dakota State, Delaware (very long shot) and Liberty. EKU, Jax St, Chatty, MO St, etc. are all a few years away at best with MO St having the most potential of those by far.

The Best Option for SBC football is to go ahead and invite:

1. Missouri State - start playing in 2016
2. Texas Arlington (restart fully) - start playing in 2018
3. Florida Gulf Coast - start playing in 2018 (they have support)
http://www.naplesnews.com/news/2013/mar/...-football/

Place these schools in a hold pattern for possible expansion to 16 after 2020

4. Coastal Carolina (nice rivalry for Ga Southern)
5. Eastern Kentucky (nice fit in the footprint, nice rivalry with App State)

Then

6. Kennesaw State (nice replacement if USA or Ga State go to CUSA)
7. North Florida ( will be the last universty in florida without football after FGCU, will be ready to join FGCU)
8. Lamar (long shot but will be nice Texas Triange with Texas State, Texas Arlington....aka the Texas Three or the Three Amigos )

Odd list of schools... what a joke!

Why is the list of schools odd?

Take no offense... I literally thought you were joking when you had some of these schools listed. The list of schools you mention seem to just be pulled from nowhere. 3 haven't even started playing yet. Kennesaw State is commuter school that will be lucky to draw 8k fans to a game, in Atlanta, because most of the kids there either are home or working on the weekends. Coastal is so far out that travel makes no sense except for Ga Southern. The goal, from I understand, is to find App St a travel buddy. Eastern KY is the only option on your list. Just my opinion, but you know what those are like...

How does that work for divisional alignment?

I don't see why the Sunbelt would want a northern Great Plains school all-sports, and if adding a school FB-only, as noted there is already a FB-only school that seems to be available for the asking to add to the East which doesn't require an extra year transitioning from FCS to FBS.

The BOT made a statement stating the desire to move. They may not see any reason to repete theirselves. Our BOT is quiet on all issues but on the bright side we did hire a head coach in a couple of days. They can move fast if needed.

it would not make much sense for schools like montana and ndsu to leave behind longtime rivalries to play some distant schools their fans dont know..sure their success has some people urging them to move up a level but they have a good thing going. they have fierce rivalries with like schools in their region and they can go off and thump a big name school or two every year to fire up their fans..they should incourage idaho to join them.

RE: The Best Option for SBC football
Now that JMU is off the table and a seeming majority can't get over their Liberty hangup, we're really to the point of skimming the bottom of the barrel in the southeast and mid-south in terms of potential FCS moveups. The majority of teams with the best FBS potential are generally located in the northern plains. The Sun Belt already has a presence there with Idaho. If Idaho is to remain in this conference we might as well attempt to make it worthwhile and try and add the cream of the crop from that area too, otherwise break off with Idaho and fully commit to the Sun Belt's geographic roots. The current situation is silly in having a lone wolf team so many miles from the rest of the conference.

I wouldn't call it the majority, more like a vocal minority. It remains to be seen if there truly is a hang-up on Liberty or if it's just on this board. We will know by the end of May.

No offense taken my friend. I was trying to take a long view (looking 8 years out) based upon the information shared on the forum. EKU and Coastal were not on my radar until discussed a few months ago.

I think you are right about EKU; however, they will need at least two years to transfer to FBS. So if I had to choose at the moment, I still prefer Missouri State. Then the SBC should focus on restarting UTA football.

Actually, Texas-Arlington needs to "focus" on re-starting football.

I disagree. As it seems the ACC's CCG proposal is gaining support, the logical move is stay at 11 for the time being. Assuming the proposal will be adopted, the SBC gains the CCG game without adding an additional member. The SBC can then drop Idaho when the contract stipulates, and if the SBC is in the position to add/poach at that time, then so be it.

With that said, that's my outsider opinion. I defer to the judgment of the presidents as they have a lot more info/data at their fingertips that pretty much all of us.

I agree if the presidents are of the opinion expansion would only add numbers and not value to the conference then nothing should be done. If they see that growing by one is necessary then Liberty seems the most logical remaining choice after the JMU rejection. If they see value in growing by more than one then we have several different possible scenarios to get into.
