perception of north texas
before CUSA invited north texas to join, what was your perception of north texas? has it changed?
i know this can turn into a school bashing, not totally looking for that, but would like honest thoughts...please don't include stupid hatred like some schools may. i'm generally curious as to the perception before we were announced as joining this conference.

TCU > SMU > North Texas in the metroplex. Good football in the 70's. Nice new stadium. Don Henley and Meatloaf!

Pre-2013, my perception of UNT was "generic Sun Belt" athletic program. I think much more highly of UNT in football now than I did then. But MBB seems very weak.

I thought you guys had a one loss season in the early 00's for some reason then fell off the map, but was wrong. No one loss season.
Same colors as Marshall.
"Hey, you guys hear North Texas got a new stadium" message board jokes.
Endzone compared to Krispy Kreme logo.
Now that you're here you seem to be investing in athletics and have a solid football coach. Good add.

I'd say about the same for my perception. I knew UNT had a strong period of success in football a couple/few decades back but, recently, had been pretty terrible. I felt there is/was a big upside at UNT just from a geographical standpoint. Glad to see you guys have a strong season in year 1 with CUSA but I'll be interested to see if it's a fluke or can be built upon.

RE: perception of north texas
Hell of a great fight with North Texas after 1988 7-0 Herd win in opening round of I-AA playoffs, Mean Green channeling the Miami Hurricanes by arriving in camo, talked a lot of trash about "Texas" football, then both teams went at it at the end of game, while fans were rocking their buses (pushing on them and actually throwing some rocks from Prindle Field tailgate, when NT players had also talked trash on. Herd was one-year removed from I-AA National Title game loss, 10-1 entering playoffs and determined to defend its home turf.
After that, didn't really think about North Texas, although now I think other than historic name recognition, the Mean Green top SMU in many areas as member.

Prior to their joining I never thought of them actually being in the Dallas-Ft Worth metroplex. Maybe the cities have grown much farther north than I realized. But they always seemed to be as relevant to DFW as Sam Houston was to Houston.
After that I thought of them as a jazz band school, since the few people I knew from down here that went there were in that category.
Other than that, I rarely thought about them and had no strong opinions.

thanks for ya'lls thoughts...i enjoy hearing them and many of your thoughts are about the same as many of our disconnected fans...
hayden fry, mean joe, 4 new orleans bowls, effing dodge hire, mac hire, new stadium, positive impact...positives
there's football? thought it was an art school? commuter school? it should just shut down...negatives
now to get the basketball dumpster fire fixed...

Honestly, I thought UNT was going to be a pushover.
Now, I can see that UNT could be a force to reckon with.

UNT has had some very good basketball in the recent past.NCAA-2010,2007. Even very competitive years ago in the old Missouri Valley against Tulsa,Louisville, others.Undefeated in Baseball.

WKU developed a pretty good rivalry (basketball) with the Mean Green.Noticed they had VERY GOOD crowds at most conference tournaments.

RE: perception of north texas
Before the move I thought about the same as others in this thread. That changed after seeing the new facilities and commitment to success along with last season. I'm now happy to be in a conference with you and think we're going to develop a great rivalry that fans can travel to.
That's why unlike some others I'm pretty happy with the way things turned out. I think playing in the west with the new additions UTSA, NT and La Tech is going to work out well for us. Rivalrys with excited fan bases that we can travel to are something we've desperately needed.

I remember NT as a powerhouse in IAA, but didn't hear much from you in the Belt, particularly in later years. But you are clearly on the go, and happy to have you in C-USA.

I remember NT prior to them joining cusa. But the last few years they haven't even come into mind. Their fb wasn't that great and their basketball was worst. Lately there has been a resurgence of athletic pride and I don't know whether you joining cusa has anything to do with it. But honestly, I'm glad that you're part of our conference and I see great things in store for it.

Pre-2013, I had no idea where North Texas was located. (I assumed in Northern Texas, but that's it.) I still just now had to wikipedia the name of the city.
You had a good year in football, and I still managed to watch only 1 UNT game on TV. (The game vs Rice)
I see UNT as a potential spoiler to Texas & Indiana this season.
Not as bad as I thought it was going to be, for sure. Could be an up and comer in C-USA.

I just thought of them as a average to below average member of the Sun-Belt. I saw you guys play for the first time this year against UGA, and was very impressed. It's actually been fun watching your success and the momentum that's building around your program.
Very happy to be in the same conference with you, and now see you as a program on the rise.
