RE: Is it time to add UConn to the ACC?
No. Like other wise folks have stated, FSU (and likely Clemson) would need to be "bought off" by ESPN to justify the addition of another "hoops" program into the league.

Is UConn worth it, considering we already have a presence in NYC without them?

Getting to 16 just to get to 16 doesn't add up, unless the math involves Texas or Penn State.

FWIW - UConn basketball belongs in the Big East with Georgetown and Villanova.

I think the ACC should hold out and hope that Notre Dame comes on board. And if they do, look at adding West Virginia for #16....

The ACC is just fine with basketball, what they need more of is football muscle

If Notre Dame doesn't come (I don't think they will), WVU and Cincinnati would make for a good geographic match to get to 16. WV would connect PA and VA. OH would connect PA and IN. I would rather see these two than Connecticut. If UConn could get their football up while maintaining their hoops they might see an opening in a few years.

RE: Is it time to add UConn to the ACC?
Perhaps Connecticut lawmakers should put a little pressure on ESPN by stopping their tax break gravy train. Tell ESPN that they are going to put an end to their $260 million in tax breaks unless they pressure the ACC to add the Huskies:
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/27/sports...ticut.html

After all, ESPN was originally created to cover Connecticut sports.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_ESPN#Origins

A little hardball could go a long way. Why give a break to a network that has repeatedly stabbed UConn in the back since Mickey Mouse and company started running the network? The American is costing UConn money. It is high time to recoup it.

I doubt the State of Conn. would pressure ESPN that way. Its very easy to move a corporate office to another state thats willing to give ESPN as sweet a deal or sweeter than what Conn. gives them. I still remember how easy it was for Xerox to move their corporate offices to Connecticut many years ago, even though Xerox was founded in Rochester and has its main manufacturing facilities in Rochester.

If the State of Connecticut applied even a little pressure on ESPN for something that they would see as a small issue in their relative empire, they could move to Westchester right above NYC, or N Jersey, or anywhere and get similar deals.

$260 million over 12 years. So $21 2/3 million a year. That might work. It's not so much money that it's worth moving to another state over but then again the ACC is probably going to want another $2 million per team plus the $22 million to cover UConn's share. So $52 million more per year to bribe the ACC into taking UConn. But then there is the lose of value to the AAC contract that ESPN has UConn at a reduced rate. I don't think ESPN can be leveraged by taking away their tax breaks.

It might be easier to just funnel the ESPN tax breaks into UConn's athletics program if lawmakers really care that much.

Isn't expansion about new markets and conference dominance? If expansion does happen again it will be for BIG FISH, the ACC has more leverage now than in the past.

Have you been to Bristol to see the ESPN campus? The complex is like a small town! A move would be so expensive for ESPN.

I am not saying that the State of Connecticut should cut off all tax breaks for ESPN. However, a good corporate citizen should give back to the citizens of Connecticut. It really wouldn't impact their bottom line that much to make sure that the nation's best basketball school (which is irrefutable when you combine the success of the men's and women's teams) has a good home.

ESPNU in Charlotte is already capable of running all of ESPN and is setup as an automatic failover for all the channels. It is easier for them to pull the plug than you think. And Charlotte would be a front runner for the new location. Do you really want to gamble that against them moving into the heart of the ACC?

RE: Is it time to add UConn to the ACC?
2 things would need to happen:
1. if the ncaa drops the division requirement. we could stop at 15 teams in football and reserve 16 for you know who. that would also add schedule flexibility in football so fsu, clemson and other football minded schools wouldn't have their SOS dragged down. no offense to uconn, but their football has not been very good.
2. acc network comes to fruition and uconn (along with the rest of the acc north) solidifies the acc as THE conference in the NE. keep in mind, espn needs ratings in the winter and spring too. bball could become a more significant portion of the acc tv money.

For sure, anything is temporarily possible if ESPN wanted to leave CT that badly. However, the facilities in Bristol dwarf their facilities in Charlotte. Charlotte is set up as a band aid failover. They would still need to build new buildings in Charlotte if they wanted to run the whole ESPN network in anything other than emergency mode.

Also, Bristol is not far from NYC. I don't see ESPN leaving the media capital of the world for Charlotte. Stranger things have happened, but I just don't see that happening.

With the ACC Network if it happens and scheduling without divisions or create pods would benefit Then by adding Both Cincinnati and UConn. Cincinnati brings both For and Basketball as well as great recruiting grounds in Ohio. Viewership would increase in Ohio for the ACC being in the near epicenter of B1G and SEC country where Both meet. Ohio borders Pa, Mi., In., Ky, and even Big12 WV. UConn fills in NYC area.

Taking Rutgers was a blocking move, IMO. The B1G knew the ACC would not add UConn to BC, but it would take Rutgers if they took UConn. This way the B1G gets Rutgers now and can come back for UConn if/when they want to.

That's not very satisfying if you are a UConn fan, but I'm guessing that was the most likely thinking over at Big Ten HQ.

IF...... big IF Notre Dame joins then I would be down to invite 1 and ONLY 1 school to get to 16.

Period.

I might be more worried about them relocating to the parent company in Orlando at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex.

Assuming the conspiratorial theories about ESPN are valid, why would ESPN want to pay approximately $20 million per year for UConn (to keep the current per team average the same in the ACC) when it is getting UConn+the entire American conference for that much right now. There is no way on earth UConn and/or Cincy is worth them reopening the ACC's contract for those additions.
