Losing Stoudamire
I think that may have been one of the reasons for the regression of the guard corp this season. Joe and Geron took noticeable steps back from last season, and Crawford didn't improve. Mean while Johnson had an All-American type season and McConnell made the transition from mid-major to big boy league without missing a beat.

Joe really looked up to Stoudamire, he was a short guard that made it in the NBA, and they had a great relationship. Stoudamire was always in Joe's ear on the bench telling him what to do.

+8 It's a gr8 observation and ^ this more than likely the main reason for the dramatic decline and failure to perform at peak levels and develop continuity.....Watching Damon interact with the players was as charismatic and nurturing as I have ever witnessed (from a coaching/development standpoint). Very similar to the way Kevin Ollie conveys info to his players (although I haven't experienced this first-hand). I see the way his tactics and influence has elevated Napiers and Boatrights game to an elite level. This should not be underestimated and is going to be critical going forward how it is going to be replaced in the developing of our next crop of guards.....

Again, we stress the need for an assistant that can be somewhat of a mold of Stoudamire; like AA or Penny, whereas, we can begin to harness the potential from the beginning, and ensure that these guys gain the proper insight;development and nurturing to get the most out of themselves.....Gr8 post 07-coffee3

No, no, no. Josh's fault for not keeping Stoudamire. The players should never be held accountable for not retaining anything they learned from the previous year. It's always good to have start the coaching process over every year even with seniors.

Correct. Pastner should never lose assistants, unless they suck. To determine that he should poll this board. Even if they are offered better positions elsewhere he should keep them here. It's all his fault.

Not saying fault, we're just missing his guidance and leadership from a mentoring coaching perspective....I really think that's what emanates within the players from mentors such as Johnny Dawkins;Tommy Amaker and Kevin Ollie...The players can associate and rel8 to them in such a more intimate manor (basketball-wise) and this intimacy translates very effectively on the basketball floor...

Some people seem to mistake "reasons" for "excuses". Nobody's making excuses, but I think we would all like to hear valid reasons. This is one reason our guard play seemed to regress some. Very good post.

They just were not that good. Stoudamire had already coached them against Michigan State, right?

Come on guys, we made the NCAAs and won a game. Let's move on. Maybe next season's guards will be better. Maybe Shaq and Austin and Dominic will get better. Maybe we'll do better.

You do realize most every season for most every team ends worse than this.

I do agree with you that maybe the guys were as good as they could get, but I'm not sure how the Michigan State game ended means he couldn't have gotten just a little more out of them with one more year. At least they got a little help from Austin, Shaq, and Nick this season. Maybe Damon could have been a little bit of a difference maker. But at the end of the day we just need better, smarter, taller, longer players.

Fault or not, that's a circular discussion to get into. Stoudamire was a great assistant. Good job to Pastner for hiring him, poor job on Pastner's part for letting him get away.

The guard play was noticeably worse this season without him here, so that's ultimately on the guy who does the hiring and firing.

Is this what MEMPHIS basketball has become? Are we now relegated to winning one game in the tourney and calling it a successful year? Don't know if this is the type of fan I can be; excited and satisfied with making the round of 32....

I don't think anyone is excited or satisfied, just a little more patient.
