RE: my new calculations
20 to 1 therefore I can't respond to all. I have 2 jobs. What recession in TEXAS?

So let me respond to some.

Yes Texas has a bunch of fbs, however Texas is big 26,000,000 compare to 4-9 million on other sbc states. Lamar puts the sbc in 2 television markets, Beaumont and Houston. 8 million between in Beaumont and Houston tv areas which is almost twice as big as Louisiana or Alabama.

Yes Lamar dropped football by bad people, however football was brought back by good people. So
when USA fans look down their nose at Lamar football after only 5 years , I say Lamar about 65 years of playing football. A couple bowl games, a few top 20's, top 20 wins, a 34 game history with out rival ULL going back to Oct 23, 1927 when ULL won 19-16. What was USA doing in football since the 1920's?

Beaumont is 90 miles from Houston, a city with two current FBS programs already in it. You want to get laughed out of the room claim that Lamar puts the SBC in Houston.

Who said USA was looking down their nose at Lamar? USA loves Lamar but we are only one vote.

USA fans don't look down our nose at Lamar. There are simply better options available. I don't know why you continually read WAY too much into anything said about Lamar. USA fans enjoyed our trip to Lamar a few years ago when we played in football. There is no indictment to be made on Lamar; it's a fine university I'm sure. That doesn't mean that there are not better all-sport options the Sun Belt should pursue. By the way, USA didn't even exist as a university until 1963.

Ha, Lamar fans should just forget it, should have never left the American South/SBC of their own pathetic choice.

The two FBS teams in Houston aren't the problem. It's the FBS teams about 90 miles northwest, and 160 miles northwest.

A&M has a HUGE presence in Houston. So does UT. Rice and UH have their own following, but not near the size of the first two.

The average TV sportscast is about 2:30 long. The average TV news story is 30 seconds. That means the typical local station has room for at most 5 stories, to beat that they've got to do some really short pieces and that cuts down the amount of room they have for 30 second stories.

The question isn't how many teams are in the area, it is how many seconds can a given team get each week on local TV? In season, M-F, AState will easily get up to 7 minutes in Jonesboro but 60 to 120 seconds in Little Rock. The challenge in a market like Houston or Dallas is getting any of that precious time.

I used to be the guy putting those sportscasts together here in Houston and we rarely had time to show anything from UH or Rice other than game highlights and an occasional sound bite on Mondays or Tuesdays. Houston also has four FCS programs in its actual market without adding anything from Beaumont. Ask TSU, PV or HBU how much attention they receive from the local affiliates or CSN.

Beaumont - 118,000
+
Houston - 2,161,000
-----------------------
Total = 8,000,000

Carry the 2... wait what? Even if you included surrounding areas and managed to get to 8,000,000 people that still doesn't equal 8 million TV Viewers.

Yet, no one in Lafayette considers a program that has dropped football and restarted it a rival. Our longest running rival in football is Louisiana Tech. You are dealing with a different generation at UL, a majority do not want or care to live in the past in association with Lamar or McNeese St. Playing Lamar in springs sports, football and basketball on occassion is fine, but there is no support for Lamar as a member of the Sun Belt Conference.

I believe he is referring to the two MSA's, but I don't know if it is 8 million. It is 6 million easy and going up. Houston-Sugarland-Baytown-Galveston-The Woodlands MSA is 5,500,000 and one of the fastest growing areas in the country. Development has been mostly to the west, north, and south of downtown Houston. My house is 30 miles west of Downtown in an unincorporated area with a Houston address. Harris County estimated there were around 1,000,000+ in my area alone when they opened a new segment of the Grand Parkway, the Houston area outer loop, just a few months ago. When I moved in 20 years ago, there was basically nothing but prairie to the west of me except for small towns. One of those small towns is estimated to have around 1.2 million in a few years.

It is true that it is 90 miles from center of downtown to center of downtown, but Houston city limits means nothing. Just like Dallas city limits means nothing.

On the Beaumont end, the MSA is 404,000 but there are around 600,000 in the surrounding areas where Beaumont-Port Arthur-Orange are the principle cities. Again, don't think city limits. While there are jurisdictional boundaries, the major cities are linked.

The Houston outer loop, Grand Parkway, is actually 35 miles from the Jefferson County line (the most populated county in the BPA MSA.) While growth can continue in the current directions, the most undeveloped areas are on the eastern side of the Houston MSA. Southeast is a no-go, because you run into the Gulf. I wouldn't be surprised if the next push is to the east and to the Northeast. The MSA already extends about 50 miles to the west and north of downtown Houston. It is probably reaching a practical limit.

Lets not split hairs. I could easily make the case that everything north of Macon, GA and east of AL and west of SC is Atlanta Metro. So lets just go with the actual numbers,

Beaumont, TX is not considered a part of the Houston CSA and a CSA is as broad as you can possibly define one metro area. Nice try. Wide right.

Never said that Beaumont was part of the Houston CSA, but it is adjacent to it bordering two of the Houston MSA eastern counties, Liberty and Chambers counties. The two MSA's are contiguous. There is no separation.

Even so, there are some demographers that think the two should be combined. The main reason the two are not is that Houston area growth has been to the west and north, but is starting to the east. Numerous residental developments are opening up east of Baytown (less than 45 minutes from downtown Beaumont).

It is 110 miles from my house to Beaumont. All but 18 miles of that are in the Houston MSA.

Might be reasonable if the MSA's are connected. Not so much if there is separation. When I lived in south Georgia (Valdosta), there was a lot of open space headed to Macon, but that was a long time ago so it may have filled in just as it has in Texas.
