Unfortunately that sick grandmother thing has happened to a lot of schools. Hard to stop it from happening.

Yep, just happened to UTEP with 5 star recruit Isaac Hamilton.
They built a schedule around him so his family could see him play in the LA area, built marketing material around him, and more. Then after practicing at USC over the summer, he suddenly starts caring about his sick grandmother and needs to play in LA.
Floyd accused USC of tampering, so Hamilton ended up at UCLA....so USC's tampering may end up biting them in the ass because now they have to face him twice a year

when we fired ken pol pot mcdummy bobby lutz' name was thrown out and i wanted no part of his consistent fail. i may have even used all caps in my response.
just reading between the lines i have a question for the app st fans. when ya'll need a coach are ex unc folks foisted on you by everyone and their brother?
that's what happens at western. everybody starts shouting anybody that had anything to do with uk and also anyone with u of l ties. the whole big brother knows best crap.
rumor was our president was actually infatuated with opie pelphrey and i thank god that didn't happen.
i'm not saying to eliminate anyone from the 'flagship(s)' but it gets old.

It has happened in the past, sorta how we got Jason Capel in the first place. He had no prior head coach experience, but hey, he was a Tarheel, he has to know something about hoops.
It seems this go round the University is seeking coaching gene pools elsewhere, which is IMHO a good thing.

I like him as well. I don't think it would be hard to get him to leave NCCU. He makes $100,000 a year. I'm pretty sure the biggest salaries in the MEAC top out around what we paid Capel (a 30 year old with 1 year as an assistant). So we could atleast double his salary.
The problem is he will probably get better offers from other schools. Also, he would be a good hire, and I just can't picture a world where Charlie Cobb makes a good men's basketball hire.

RE: App State Fires Basketball Coach
Cobb isn't going to go cheap this go-around. The job has changed from what it was four years ago. It's a rebuilding job with a team that is likely going to be APR ineligible this upcoming season. Four years ago the team was one shot away from the NCAA's with the key players coming back.
It's likely the entire team maybe minus one or two (depending in Canty will be allowed back and possibly a player who doesn't play) will be back next year. Don't know any info at all regarding it, but it happens with a coaching change.
There's going to be a good list of candidates interviewed. Some of the coaches mentioned above, plus top assistants like Mike Rhoades at VCU, some D2 coaches and maybe even Greenburg as he has ties to the area, although that's unlikely to happen.
I don't want Lutz. Me and other fans were talking about Bruce Pearl many months ago, but it was a pipe dream and Auburn seems to be getting him. Many people want Matt McMahon, but I don't know if the job is right for someone with no head coaching experience right now.
With App announcing a new Chancellor any day now (private search so the finalists are unknown) plus the coaching search, there's going to be some interesting times ahead on the mountain

RE: App State Fires Basketball Coach
Write it down.
We will be good in basketball again.
CC honoring the head bb coach contract put us into
a sad shape in bb right now. He can go over all the
reasons he honored the contract and didn't fire him
years ago, but there is really no excuse. Going from
24 wins the year before he took over to APR problems
and a pathetic record is not something the AD should allow.
Would you believe he was the best player on our team this past year? jk

TDog you might not want Lutz, neither do I, but I've got a solid source saying he is the guy. I don't understand why Matt McMahon is being short changed given the other assistants names being floated. HC experience isn't a prerequisite for being successful at the mid-major level. Shaka Smart was an assistant at Clemson and Florida before landing at VCU. Brad Stevens was an assistant for 5 years at Butler before getting the HC job at the request of the players. There are dozens of other examples. Matt is a tough nosed, hard working, disciplined guy who has a passion for ASU basketball. It'll take every bit of that passion and hard work to get this program back to respectability and beyond. This would not be A JOB to Matt. Unfortunately Cobb will not give Matt a shot at the job. Just as the Buzz, Capel and Satterfield hires were a done deal, I'm afraid this one is too.

If Lutz is chosen he will literally be the death of CC's job unless he manages to turn heads.

RE: App State Fires Basketball Coach
The hire needs to be one that energizes both the fanbase and the student body. While Lutz has a resume, his announcement is not likely to be greeted with great enthusiasm. We need someone who will hit the ground running and can relate to the campus community. Our two most successful hires were both young coaches with little to no head coaching experience but who had the ability to energize the fanbase and create some excitement. I want that again, but fear we will go for the safe, lazy hire.

Lutz didn't really have that great a record as a head coach. As I recall it kept going
downhill pretty much. So doubt he is that great a recruiter. Even hate to hear it from
the Charlotte fans about us hiring their old coach that they fired. CC he was let go for
a reason.

Lutz could recruit in the original CUSA when he could tell recruits to come play against Cincy, L'ville, Memphis, Marquette, etc. on ESPN. Once we switched to the A10 his recruiting turned to JUCOs and players who were projects.
Honestly I'd be surprised if he ended up at App, which might be a good thing for you guys.
