A good friend of mine lives near the mall. His wife and daughter had to lock down the house and cower until he could get home.

If this keeps happening yes. Because all the folks that like to buy things won't go there.
It's hard to keep businesses open with a mall full of folks that just walk around and don't buy anything.

Malls have always had people that just hung out and didn't buy anything.
You mentioned that "accurate" judgmental map of Memphis...
OCM has money north, east, and west of it and south of it is middle class.
OCM isn't Mall of Memphis that didn't have surrounding communities to support it.
So the question is why did OCM lose the tenants that attracted the money in the first place? I've read people comment on the "ghetto" retailers and kiosks that have moved in, but considering the local neighborhoods, why would the higher end stores leave?
What happened yesterday was sad and I hope we soon get the story. The mall has plenty security and if it goes it'll hurt the the community.

Malls in general are a dying breed - too much overhead. The smaller outdoor malls are the new "it" thing to build.

Yep, this.
Online shopping has eaten up a lot of what made OCM successful years ago - I order stuff from Loft often, and I'll do it online before I go to the store in the mall most times. The only times I'll run in there is if I need to get my son shoes at Stride Rite, since I want him to have his foot sized before buying. While I'm there I may run in Children's Place & grab a couple of pairs of jeans for him, and might grab some soap at Bath & Body Works, but that's about it.
One big thing that caused the "better" stores to pull out of OCM is that the big money spenders are now all shopping across the street at Laurelwood...Joseph, James Davis, Sachi, etc. That shopping center is booming.

Yup. I'm pretty sure if "place young people hang out" was a family feud category, the mall would be far and away the top answer.
That being said, something I noticed when I was there last was how packed it was with people in their teens and early twenties. Like really crowded and the vast majority were high school/college age. Any time you have that many bored young folks (no matter the race or socio-economic class) around each other with little-to-no adult interference, you run the risk of trouble starting. Trouble started yesterday and one/some of the guys happened to be an idiots with a gun
The mall has certainly changed quite a bit in terms of the retailers and the patrons. The former bothered me because many of the stores look cheap and carry crappy merchandise. The latter doesn't bother me, but there's no doubt that many of the people who used to shop there no longer do because of all of the young minorities that now frequent the mall. Sad, but true.
I think it's been gradually heading towards its current state. A store or two moved out and they seemingly hastily replaced them with stores that would pay the lease. These stores attracted more of a younger crowd that skewed toward devotees of hip-hop/streetwear culture (both of which I love). Many of the (mostly) white and upper-middle class folks that used to shop there didn't like that crowd and stopped shopping at OCM as much or even completely. The stores that they shopped at moved out because of lack of business and more stores catering to that younger crowd moved in.

The part about people who don't go places and do things (or do so begrudgingly) because there are people there that don't look and act the same way that they do.

The Oak Court Macys is nice, but the rest of the mall is a lost cause.

What do you mean by look AND act. Looking different is one thing. Acting different is the issue.
