FSU President Barron to take over Penn State
Onward State has learned exclusively from two sources directly involved with the situation that Florida State President Eric J. Barron will become Penn State’s next president. The decision will become official Monday at a previously announced press conference.

So let's hear all the conspiracy theories. ACC spy or ACC stool pigeon?

He is going to the bigger school where he will get paid more for it. Really guys....it's simple. Don't get all "Southern Pride" about this one. It's just the facts.

Well there's that and he was there for 20 years before. The timing is the only thing I question. Penn State has been looking for a year.

He "got it" regarding the academic benefits from being in a conference with the likes of Duke, UVA, and those others. I wonder how much it irked him when fans, boosters, and board members wanted them out of the ACC and into either the Big XII or SEC.

I wonder if it comes out who that institution was that applied to the Big Ten and was turned down because of not being an academic fit. FSU and UConn seemed to come up a lot, and maybe that was the ceiling the guy was facing at FSU if it was them.

I kind of thought PSU would have gone for a guy like Ikenberry, another short-term guy with some years on him that was familiar with the institution. Something about Barron, sounds like Spanier Pt. 2. A disingenuous sort. No thanks.

Well after the "F.S.U. rumored target of the Big 10" news a year ago I'd say Big 10 spy running home to momma. But seriously it was time for a change at F.S.U. after the wranglings of the past few years and he will probably do well in helping Penn State clean house and starting on a fresh page. If I were Swofford I'd urge Virginia to look for a new president too.

Considering both schools' presidents allowed Swofford to woo and court the schools into the GoR, I think what FSU just lost might make Swofford's nights a little less restful. "His kind of guys" were at those schools.

NC State and VT both have folks from Purdue. Some if it depends on how dumb and weak the boards are.

RE: FSU President Barron to take over Penn State
I'm surprised at the suggestion that Barron is a "Big Ten spy". While he was a professor at Penn State, he received his degrees from Florida State and Miami.

IIRC, his hiring was controversial at the time for two reasons:
1. Some at Florida State felt he did not have enough administrative experience in higher education
2. His compensation was almost entirely dependent on meeting certain fundraising goals. Support from the state and academic donations were down, and Florida State needed a fundraiser. If he did not meet these goals, he would be paid well under the amount expected for a president the size of FSU.

I find it strange that Penn State would choose Barron, as from what I read, donations to Penn State were actually up in the aftermath of the Sandusky scandal. I can see why Barron would take the move, as Penn State is likely offering a much better compensation package than Florida State.

RE: FSU President Barron to take over Penn State
Why would Penn State choose Barron? Because he is a well known entity, has experience at the position AND most importantly...he was actually willing to come to Penn State. Whomever the next President was going to be, was going to..is going to be under a lot of scrutiny and pressure. Barron knows what it is like now to be in the media spotlight.

The PSU job is still slightly radioactive. During such times you need an alum. FSU is not the top job in Florida.

UF has most of the State of Florida support. Miami is private and you can hide behind a lot of screens. FSU doesn't have as much State political support and has been through hell from a sports standpoint from which the only step is down.

PSU has full State of Pa political support. Pa is home. Barron can go out as a savior/rebuilder instead of people bitching at him about small stuff.

Interested to hear how title IX is a factor with Winston's accuser.

I know you're joking, but for a little refresher on the Big 12 situation...

"At least half of the emails I'm getting are saying that this $2.9 million is too much to give up," Barron said. "This was my attempt to explain that there are a lot of factors to consider. You have to realize all the travel costs that would come in the Big 12. We don't have to fly to every game now in the ACC. We would have to in the Big 12. With the costs there, it may not be as big an advantage as others might think."

In his emails, Barron also listed other factors he wanted stakeholders to consider, including an exit fee from the ACC that he said would be "between $20M and $25M."

"We have no idea where that money would come from," Barron wrote. "It would have to come from the Boosters which currently are unable to support our current University athletic budget, hence the 2% cut in that budget."
