"Body bag" Games
A lot of people think that Sun Belt schools should shy away from scheduling upper tier P5 teams and focus on other G5 teams, lower tier P5 teams, and maybe 1 FCS team. I understand this logic as overall winning percentage will be better, league perception would be better, and the chance for a ranked team would increase.

The counter argument for this is that teams usually need a money game for their budget.

But what about this counter argument... We have heard the last two years how weak Ohio State's schedule is compared to teams in the SEC, Big 12, and PAC 12. If we somehow had a team in our league go 12-0 people would not only say our schedule is weak, but say it is incredibly weak. Without a win against a ranked P5 team would we have any shot at the 4 team playoff? Wouldn't we need to schedule a tough out of conference game for credibility? Or just resign ourselves to the fact we aren't getting in regardless?

You cannot beat the upper P5's unless you play them.

The Athletic Director at the University of Arkansas, who ASU fans like to troll on Twitter as a joke, is the chairman of the playoff and Non AQ Bowl selection committee. We've long resigned ourselves to the fact we're not getting anywhere near there if its even close.

It's probably useful as a recruiting tool also. I can't imagine a recruit not being excited about the prospect of playing in Neyland or Bryant-Denny. We've played UT, Mississippi State and NC State so far and even though we haven't won, we haven't been smashed either. I can't see that really being used against us. Personally though, I'd rather stay away from the Alabamas and LSUs and stick with the next level down in the P5.

All of us plays a money game the key is to limit it to one and then try to schedule a winnable money game....

the check is close to the same playing a middle of the pack or bottom feeder BCS team as it is to play a top 10 team. So what's better..a close loss (14 points..or so) to a top ranked school or maybe a win against a Ky or Illinois?

I'm going with the win

I would argue that a 12-0 season against G5 and Sun Belt teams would get a team near the top 25 ranking. Doing it multiple years, could get a team in teh top 25.

That would be more beneficial to getting a team into the playoffs than a less than likely win over a P5 powerhouse.

I think of it as learning to walk before you can run. Get to 12-0 first then progressively make your schedule more difficult.

Like it or not it's also selling point in recruiting.

RE: "Body bag" Games
The reason the MAC has gotten to BCS games is because their non-conference P5 game is against a B1G team and the lower half of the MAC sucks hind tit. For the Sun Belt, it's most likely an SEC team and then maybe another SEC or ACC team. I do think the SBC arms race and having more teams so there's a bigger bottom will pay off in the long run.

The problem with this logic is that you never really know which P5 teams are truly bottom feeders. Look at GS vs Florida. This time last year no one would have thought Florida would come even close to going 4-8 much less losing to GS. On the flip side 12 months ago many thought Missouri and Auburn would be much more beatable then they actually ended up being...

For the next 2 years TXST has some good games lined up.
2014- Illinois
2015- Florida State
I'm not expecting to go undefeated anyway so might as well get some exposure and $$ out of it. We have a chance at Illinois but Florida State will be a body bag game but who cares we get to play a national champion.

I remember several ASU fans who were thrilled that we would finally not be playing a ranked P5 program this year...because there was no way Missouri or Auburn would ever be ranked.

Of course you can't predict who will be bad 3 to 4 years out when most of these games are signed. But you can play the odds of scheduling a team that might have that special team once every 5 to10 years...

other than that they are usually middle to lower teams in their conference.

Everyone want to play the power house schools...I do too but not every year. We all know that when you schedule Bama, LSU, Ohio St and the Georgia's they will be top 15 most years

Missouri was scheduled about 5 months in advance. They were our thrown in game whenever we had to pick up an extra OOC game because FAU and MTSU left.

Auburn was the 2nd of a 2 game guarantee deal that was signed in 2009, long before anyone ever dreamed both schools would have Gus Malzahn as coach and Auburn would play for two national titles.

RE: "Body bag" Games
The key is balance and moderation. Idaho's desired schedule is a big dollar body bag game, an FCS game, and and home and away against a moderately good mid major. Lately with WAC revenues drying uop we've played 2 body bag games.

You need the money, and players like playing in big games in front of family, even though the outcome is generally not pretty. But we played #1 USC close in the coliseum and was a last second 2 pt conversion away from beating UVA so you never know what could happen.

Bodybag games should be only played if it is a necessity. BJC has given us all the model for FBS success. Play the weakest possible schedule loaded with home games and just win. When you get attention for gaudy but hollow W/L records and your program is getting stronger slowly dial up the SOS to keep the wins coming in. Eventually play one big game a year, preferably in the first game or two so you can spend 3 months preparing for that one game and after several years you are a big name team too. That is how it is done, and deviate from that model at your own peril.

I agree. I'd take 12-0 for every conference member regardless of who those wins come from.

If you want to get 8-10 bids for the Sun Belt every year then yes you are going to have to beat some top teams yes.

If you are just hoping to get 2-3 bids then racking up wins against nobodies will work just fine.
