Maryland files a $157M counter claim vs ACC, claims ACC tried to pry B1G schools

Maryland files a $157 million counterclaim vs. ACC. Alleges Wake Forest/Pittsburgh officials tried to recruit unnamed B1G schools to leave.

Alex Prewitt ‏@alex_prewitt 3m
This counterclaim was filed in North Carolina, because the Maryland issues have been stayed until the N.C. court resolves matters there.

This case just keeps getting weirder.

RE: Maryland files a $157M counter claim against ACC
I wonder who the ACC tried to get to leave the B1G? And why would Wake Forest be the lead on that?

Alleges that b/c of "counsel and direction...received from ESPN," the ACC has tried to lure other schools "to extract more lucrative terms."

Probably personal connections, but yeah, Wake is supposed to be the neutral facilitator/pacifier of the ACC.

Penn State and... Ohio State?

You'd have to assume it would be Penn State, but I suppose there are other possibilities as well.

Lol. Maybe add the Big East/AAC to the case, double the damages and create a class action. Grisham's next novel? He is a football fan.

Honest question: why would having ESPN give the ACC counsel on who to grab from the B1G have any bearing on why the ACC should reduce Maryland's exit fee?

You're probably right. Messing with Ohio State is just too risky

Rutgers?

I wouldn't think that would be likely. I'm betting Maryland had this information before the B1G announced them and Rutgers as new members, as any expansion info of poaching the B1G would surely be kept away from Maryland by the rest of the members after that time.

I'd be willing to bet it was Penn State. Ohio State would have laughed at the ACC and the ACC knows this, they are a Big Ten school through and through. The ACC wouldn't have even approached them.

I never expected it to happen, but this probably puts the nail in the coffin for the ACC homers who expected the 50M exit fee to be paid in full.

I put the chances of a mutual walk-away with Maryland never receiving the withheld funds from this season as the most likely outcome at this point.

But all the ACC trolls told us that that was a lock that it would be paid out in full.

The $156,799,026 in damages sought represents "3 times the amount of compensatory damages for the ACC's violation of Md. Antitrust laws."

That works out to $52.2M - the amount of the ACC exit fee.

I don't know why this is illegal to recruit schools.

I don't think it is against the rule at all. Recruiting of other schools to your conference happens a lot behind doors
