ACC's October optimism was so last year [LNK]
Quote:If bids went out today – rather than March 16 – Syracuse (13-0) would be a No. 1 regional seed, Duke (11-2) a No. 2 or 3, UNC (10-3) and No. 3 or 4 and Pittsburgh (12-1) a No. 6 or 7. Everyone else either is a long shot or on the bubble. That list that includes perceived preseason locks Notre Dame (9-4), Virginia (9-4) and Maryland (9-5).

FSU's in at this point and isn't close to the bubble. Basically the same RPI (#34) as Duke (#30), Pitt, (#33) and UNC (#35).

9-3, 1-1 vs RPI top 25, 2-1 vs RPI top 50, #68 SOS (better than Duke and Pitt)
Wins: VCU, UMass
Losses: Minn, Mich, UF

TRUE. Basketball is clearly down at a lot of traditional ACC basketball schools (e.g. UVa, NC State, Wake Forest, and Ga Tech). Last year Miami took up some slack, and maybe FSU plays that role this season. BC was promising, but disappointing; Va Tech is still nothing to be afraid of, either. It's a hot, stinking mess!

FSU would definitely be in.

Bubble teams would be UVA, Notre Dame, Maryland, NC State, Clemson. Of this group, NC State and Maryland (w/ Seth Allen back) have the best shot.

Help is on the way...Cuse, Pitt, Louisville and ND(to a lessor degree) will show the middle of the road ACC schools a new template.

As I have said repeatedly, even when the ACC was bragging about being the best basketball conference already when they hadn't proven it on the court -

It will take at least three years for the synergy that adding SU, Louisville, Pitt and ND to Duke, UNC, NC State will bring to the ACC to get the ACC to the best conference.

But once it happens, this conference will routinely get 8-10 bids a year.

There are far too many programs with good, not necessarily great, basketball pedigree for the middle and the upper lower level teams not to contend for NCAA tourney bids.

Cheers,
Neil

What are those first 3 schools going to show the ACC that Duke and UNC haven't already? They're just going to bump down the non-elite ACC teams a few slots.

True, the top 3 will push the others down, but all of the new teams will open up some new basketball recruiting grounds that the non-elite ACC teams don't have ready access to now. UNC and Duke can recruit anywhere. Not so much the rest of the non-elite teams.

In addition, the current non-elite ACC teams will have more chances of beating the quality teams in front of them, more like when the ACC was a 9-team league. If they fail to do so, it's on them.

As a 12-team league if those teams didn't beat either Duke or UNC and had nothing to speak of OOC, then they were toast by Selection Sunday. Now, in addition to beating either Duke or UNC, if they add a win against SU, UL, or Pitt it improves those resumes.

Cheers,
Neil

I'm sure ACC schools will be able to land a few Big East kids that would've otherwise gone there in the past. But other than that I don't think it's anything huge that you newbs bring to the table. We will have played Duke and UNC about as often as we'll play Duke, UNC, Cuse and UL. ND and Pitt add more quality matchups however, even if they aren't elite.

In FSU's case, we need to upgrade our arena and expand our practice facility. We've done well in the ACC - better than basically everyone but UNC and Duke in recent years, but we won't further improve our position in the basketball world unless our facilities are upgraded and we can pump more money into salaries.

These Big East teams (Pitt, ND and Ville) played a tougher style of hoops...and Cuse plays the best zone in the country. Really Marge...the ACC has been just UNC and Duke and they were not as physical as an average BE team.

I don't like the ACC but it played pretty physical, low-scoring basketball these last few years. Just saying.

RE: ACC's October optimism was so last year [LNK]
The ACC, outside of Duke and UNC, have not been major players for the northeast HS hoops players. With Syracuse, Pitt and ND, these schools can go after Chicago, Indiana, PA, and NY kids much easier making recruiting less regional for the AC teams not named Duke or UNC. One player can elevate a team to Tourney status or even the Top 25. Two can be the basis of a championship team.

If FSU (or Miami or NCState, etal) grabs a couple of these kids they then are in direct competition with ACC leaders.

This will take a few years and add to that the synergy once the new teams are fully integrated, the ACC should be getting a minimum of 8 bids annually.
