For non-Ga. Southern fans what would you predict for us next year?
(12-11-2013 07:55 PM)GSUNCSU Wrote:  Our MO has been to lose one we should have won and win one we should have lost. We tend to play to the level of our competition hopefully that holds up as the competition is definitely better. As many have pointed out depth and intensity will be the key to the season, the injuries we saw this year forced alot of guys to get experience and allowed others another year, so some silver lining there. I also think us seeing similar offenses week in and week out will help us adjust, whereas, others will see our TO once or twice a year. Even at UF we'd get a 4 yd run and both sides would cheer, until they realized that's what we do, over and over again. If we can avoid the injury bug, especially at B-Back and QB we'll be ok. I agree with most on where we'll finish, so 5-7 to 7-5 I'll take, and yes NCSU is that bad, regardless I'll be in Blue in Raleigh. As I live in TX, away games will be closer than home games, so I look forward to our first Sun Belt tour next year, especially down in San Marcos. We hope to within the first 2-4 years see a game at all the Sun Belt Stadiums. So ready or not Sun Belt here we come and we're bring an old foe with us, 'cause we just can't stand not to have each other to hate.

At Navy
At Ga. Tech
At North Carolina St.
Home vs. Savannah St.

Home vs. Appalachian
At New Mexico St.
At South Alabama
At Georgia St.
At Texas St.

So looking at those 12 games in all honesty what would be your prediction for the Ga. Southern record next year?

My super optimistic prediction. I do think we can lose to Navy, South Alabama, and Troy. Those are my swing games.

Have any of you GS fans read the thread title here?

We already know what you all think you're going to do. It's been inescapable for the past 8 months with all of your threads. He asked what other teams' fans think. Hope that concept doesn't escape you 05-stirthepot

Georgia Southern lost to more FCS teams than Georgia State did last year. They did beat more FBS teams (1) though. The issue isn't that Georgia Southern is a bad team or a bad add, its just that some of Georgia Southern fans have been reading too much into the Sagarins and the chatter on Any Given Saturday. You will probably lose to Georgia Tech, Navy, and NC State. You get all three on the road and your win in Gainesville means that people will pay attention to you.

Old Dominion's fans are awfully proud of their team. They played a 'middling-good' North Carolina team. What happened? They ended up having 80 points put on them in three quarters. This is how bad it can get, especially at the end of the season after you run down your depth chart.

By the way, this isn't a dig on Georgia Southern, but on the unrealistic expectations of some of their fans. I'm glad they expect to be great.

But history tells us that 7-4 FCS teams don't usually have winning records when they move up. And that teams that have 7 road games have a hard time getting to 6-6.

And USA lost at home to a 7-5 FCS team and went 6-6 in FBS. Sounds like using your logic, USA should have gone 0-11 after losing to Southern Utah at home.

Just remember we dominated Florida which is something I doubt any SBC team this year would have done.

We out gained Florida by 140 yards, gave them 3 turnovers to none for us and we missed two extra points. And we still won. I'd say that was dominating.

That wasn't the point so what is yours? It was stated that no SBC team could have beaten Florida. A moot point as there is no way of knowing one way or the other. So, let it go.

Now, can we actually get back on the OP? If not this has a chance of being moved to GD or smack because GS, your fans can't stop counterpoints and arguments when another fan says something you don't want to hear.
As I stated, the OP asked us what we thought. People are posting what they think. If you don't agree, too bad. I don't see the purpose of this thread to argue others' opinions on the matter.

Maybe you just need to sit back and try to figure out why "we" think what we think instead of arguing about how great your program is and how you're going to take the FBS world by storm?

PS - you all (as in general all) have been duly warned

Yes we lost to Southern Utah. Shame on us. Upsets happen.

6-4 in FCS plus an upset on the road against a FBS team with a losing record doesn't produce much confidence from me on you guys having a winning record next year. Here's your resume from last year

Beat Savannah State (finished winless versus FBS/FCS) at home
Beat St Francis (losing record in FCS) at home
Loss to Wofford on the road (losing record in FCS)
Beat Chattanooga (winning record in FCS - yea!) at home
Lost to Samford (winning record in FCS) on the road
Beat the Citadel (losing record in FCS) at home
Lost to Appy (losing record in FCS) on the road
Lost to Furman (winning record in FCS) at home
Beat Western Carolina (beat one team - Elon - in FCS) at home
Beat Elon (won 1 game in FBS/FCS) on the road
Beat Florida (FBS - losing record) on the road

You have 7 wins this year. Exactly one of them was over a team with a winning record in FCS. You beat two on the road (both had losing records). 3 of your 7 wins were over the dregs of FCS (Savannah State, Elon, and Western Carolina - between the THREE of them, they had exactly 1 win over FCS teams outside that group). Next year you play SIX bowl eligible teams in FBS, four of them on the road. And I promise you, beating NC State on the road isn't a done deal (I hope you win). They'll be better next year and they beat a FCS team comparable to Ga Southern this year (Richmond).

You had 6 home gams and 5 road games.

New Mexico State and Idaho would have finished at least at 7-4 with that schedule.

I hope you guys prove me wrong, but I see nothing in your record this year to reasonably predict 6-6, much less 8 or 9 wins next year.

The Sun Belt plays very solid football, and I enjoy following the conference. I do think it will be harder to compete there than you might think it will be. With that said, I predict 7-5, with a conference record of 6-2. (You're very fortunate to not be playing Troy at their place and not playing Louisiana and Arkansas State, at all.)

Wins against: Savannah St., Troy (maybe), Idaho, ULM, Appalachian, New Mexico State, and Georgia State.

Losses against: Navy, GT, NCSU (Maybe), South Alabama, and Texas State.

That's a pretty good start in your first FBS year. It's really hard to win these conference games on the road.

So here's looking at all those suckas who judged us on our W-L record this year without realistically seeing that we turned a crap situation into something awesome.

With regard to other teams predictions for next year, I have pled outright ignorance for good reason. I have no frame of reference to judge anyone's team by. But everyone else has no problem sayin " 7-4? You guys sucked this year. You will get creamed next year."

NINETEEN! 19 season ending injuries on a squad of 63? I think we did pretty bad ass with that.

Actually, your roster lists 108 players. I can assume you didn't have 45 freshman being redshirted and you don't take everyone on a road game. However, you likely had 74 scholarships, though.

That 108 includes SCOUT players that stepped up in the face of all those injuries. When was the last time a SBC school had SCOUT offensive linemen start a game?

Last year, USA had a problem with depth as they were moving from FCS to FBS. It led to a lot of losses. In several of those game, our coach would make really risky playcalls because he thought we didn't have the depth to go into OT.

But even if your team is healthy, you're going to have the same level of depth issues as you did last year. You'll be about 19 seasoned scholarships short of your opponents. And that will last for 2 years or so.

You guys were a great FCS team. That's why you got called up. But you're going to have to figure out how to handle the depth issue. Every FCS moveup has that issue.

But honestly were there not some of those 19 season ending injuries due to the player or team holding the idea of seeking and obtaining a medical red shirt year? Would think so probably.
That way they could have another year to play FBS football.

Yeah, I'd be willing to bet a couple of guys could have come back and played at some point before the end of the season if they had to. I really doubt anyone faked an injury, but it had to make the decision to sit out the remainder of the season a little easier to swallow.
